Yes an extraordinary performance, but lets not forget the writing, and choreography. This lyric captures two themes rarely addressed in song, and some very vivid characters. The slow moving foreward of the men, with their chairs in a bar, and then dancing with Emery as if the memory were dreamlike and surreal. the cumulative and collaborative talents of the performer, the lyricist and the choreographer make this a memorable and multi-layered work of art.

The film was set towards County Durham so in that area people have their own accent but the musical staging usually asks people to use Geordie, which is my city - Newcastle. But there's a mix of accents in our region - mainly Newcastle (Geordie), Sunderland (Mackem) and then others parts like County Durham, South Shields, Ashington (which used a lot more pit-mac and was distinctive back in older generations).
I think there should be a tribute to her on bbc1

+hayleypdowd Me too. The sad part is there's a lot of truth to the song. Women had so few opportunities in that generation and leaving an abusive relationships was incredibly difficult (not to suggest that its easy now).
Ann Emery is the best. I read that she retired this year at 84.

I love this song but I think this performance was too comical. I love when singers take it to a much darker place, especially in the line "what is the use of dreaming now?" I also wish she had screamed the lines; "And I'd be me for an entire life! Instead of somebody's wife!" She even could have pretended to throw off a wedding ring..
Luckily, when you play it, you can sing it your way. This is her way.

I think this took it to the exact dark place it needed to be. I was raised by a grandma who was exactly like this and an abusive grandfather. This song feels very, very real. The humor is comical, it's sad.
