For and Against Monogamy: Are Humans Naturally Monogamous or Polyamorous?
In this video, I go over the pros and cons of monogamy (one partner) and polymaory (multiple partners). Which is more natural for humans? Which is the better relationship format?

I Won't Give Up (Jason Mraz Cover, with Cajon)
Просмотров 144Год назад
I'm using a Pearl Cajohn, a Shlagwerk Heckstick (rim click), a Meinl foot shaker (left foot), and a retractable Meinl nylon brush. Shout out to Mona Tavakoli, who is Jason Mraz's go-to percussionist, who also tends to accompany him on cajon. This arrangement was largely inspired by her. If you haven't checked out her work (and she has some awesome cajon videos), you should. She's brilliant. So ...
A Jealous God? Monotheism and the Rise of Religious Intolerance
Просмотров 941Год назад
Religious intolerance comes from people fighting over whose god and interpretation of god is correct. That is a distinctly monotheistic problem, a problem that comes from religions where there is a single god that doesn't want other ideas of god acknowledged. Here, I explain that our modern form of religious intolerance is largely a problem for monotheistic religions in a way it wasn't and isn'...

What is Philosophy (of Education) Good For?

Is Mental Illness a Myth?: Thomas Szasz versus Psychiatry
Просмотров 7 тыс.Год назад
This video explores the controversial ideas of Thomas Szasz, the psychiatrist who challenged the very idea that mental distress should be classified as an illness. I do not have medical or psychiatric training, so this video is n...
Between Postmodern and Modern: Zygmunt Bauman's Sociology of Ambivalence
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.Год назад
Zygmunt Bauman is largely considered to be the sociologist of the postmodern. Really, he seeks to explain the ambivalence in the contemporary world, caught as we are between the modern and postmodern age. If the modern was largely about order and system, the postmodern is largely about liberation from these things. But do we want to be liberated from the modern? Or is there an ambivalence here?
Schools and Diversity A Thorny History
Просмотров 1202 года назад
In this video, I talk about reasons why American public schools have a thorny history with diversity. Public schools are meant to serve a radically diverse population. That means there will be struggles to figure out what curriculum could serve all without exclusion, and to figure out how to serve different groups who have animosity toward each other.
What Can We Know? Montaigne's Apology for Raymond Sebond
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.2 года назад
This video is a brief explanation of Michel de Montaigne's masterful essay, An Apology for Raymond Sebond. The essay is a full frontal assault on reason's ability to arrive at truth, let alone certainty. A great antidote to today's world of dogmatism and polarization based on feelings of certainty. Sextus Empiricus and Pyrrhonian Skepticism in an age of Social Media
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.2 года назад
This is an intro into Pyrrhonian skepticism and its main expositor Sextus Empiricus. This type of skepticism advocates that we refrain from forming strong beliefs - that we maintain uncertainty - by always seeking opposing arguments. Is this good advice for the age of social media?

I find perspectivism a useful concept, but in its strongest form self-undermining, in that it sets itself above the rule it declares for all other perspectives. That is, it is an exception to what it declares is a universal truth: that there are no universal truths, only perspectives.

I can imagine.. that while the two individuals can argue over the '6 vs 9' 'perspective', like in the picture.. Another two individuals somewhere, perhaps each, of higher-intelligence, would end up agreeing. Each *intelligent individual could consider to see the other side for themselves, come back, mutually agreeing that neither are wrong, and if anything both correct.

Szasz was a deluded human being with an oversimplistic notion of the nature of human beings! His lack of an appreciation of how we integrate our experience into a model of how the world works and therefore the potential for developing suboptimal models which result in unnecessary misery, which would not even consider the burden of chronic stress on the CNS as a cause of corrupted cognitive processing, is so profound that his name and views are simply idiocy and the product of someone with a significant mental illness himself. For this defensiveness against psychiatry represents his own discomfort with an examination of himself and not a truly objective examination of the field.

I agree with Sasz on many points but NOT on his (and Freud's) assumption that that societies, as a rule, NEED a form of social control. Perhaps THIS specific historical society needs it - but who wants to maintain this sick, hierarchical, inhuman, violent, industrial and technocratic society?

Please be careful about using the heel of your hand as you're doing. It's not a good way to get that sound, as you can injure nerves in your wrist. Please watch some good conga and djembe technique videos for a better bass stroke. I ended up wearing wrist splints and not being able to play for 6 months by doing what you're doing. Hitting that hard with the heel of your hand is very unwise.

The last segment, the phrase 'social construction' has been bothering me on and off for a long time. Listening to your conversation, perhaps I can clarify what bothers me a little. If the word 'social' isn't standing in contrast to biological, then what distinction is the term making? If the social realm is a complex weave of behaviours that have strong biological drivers, but where various social codes frame those drivers, the social codes are also subject to the biological drivers. Or to put it another way, in the language of complex systems, there will be strange attractors as a result of biological imperatives, which will form inclinations and tendencies for the social realm to organise in a particular way. If the social construction of knowledge itself also has strong biological drivers, doesn't this point to the fact that we're stuck in a position of not really knowing the extent to which something is 'grounded' in biology? And as to what it means to say 'the extent to which something is ground in biology' actually means, I think it can only be dealt with in terms of statistics and probability.

To add to that, if Charlotte as she puts it, can't wake up tomorrow and decide to be a man, this same internal sense of meaning is surely of the order of what 'constructs' concepts such as gender, and then one has to ask to what extent concepts like gender arise from processes which aren't best described as social. I don't really like the term 'constructs' at all in this context as it implies that we've seen the mechanics of the process, but we haven't.

And a serious comment... You say that "if you are touched by Christianity, you don't need prove its truth in an objective sense, even though you could." (Pp) Could you though? I don't know if that is Kierkegaard's position or yours but it seems like you have just fabricated an objectivity that you have no reason for. Is this a claim that there IS an objective argument for all truths or that objectivity... is actually subjective? Great video, thanks. 😊🙏
