Hey Prassana : Are you watching Load of rings webseries... Recently launched.... How you liking it
9.00
?
2 Minute Vedios , Waited whole week for a good listen
5 star people And u should watch bhahubali 1,2 as well as kalki
LOL. Thanks. It looks like Kalki is on Netflix now, so I'll probably watch that first.
Saving to the playlist for future use.... thanks guys! The concept of walk-through/zero-dollar retainer to get the legal docs in place is worth it alone.
I'm glad it was helpful!
Hey Mr. Preston, I'm studying Cyber Security and your book "Modern Data Protection" is my current textbook. Our reading started in Chapter 3, and I have to say, you made me laugh out loud multiple times. This episode of your podcast is the first I've listened to, and I am really enjoying it. Keep up the good work, I'll be following you from now on!
That's awesome! I try to write very conversationally. I'm honored to be your textbook! You should find this series, and my upcoming book on Ransomware, right up your alley.
If you are an IT pro, ransomware is what keeps you awake at night. Are they already in? is the data being exfiltrated right now and we haven't seen it? Terrifying.
In the immortal words of Ed McMahan.... "You are correct, sir!" (Or mam?)
This enlightening conversation just reawakened my interest in SIEMs
Glad you liked it! And Dez was a rock star.
Hi curtis, i was looking on Google for Google cloud disaster and saw your video. Since than i have seen a lot of your videos and i think its amazing that people like you are really looking after these digital disasters and spreading awareness about it. Overall a great conversation. I'm working for a fairly new startup and will share your video to my colleagues.
Thanks so much! All my stuff is also available in audio format in a podcast by the same name!
The hard part about migrating into a new backup system in my experience is the file dates. If you do the Restore-and-backup method, you get new date stamps on all the files, and it breaks the chain of custody. This can be problematic for many situations.
I'm not sure what you're referring to. It sounds like a specific problem with a specific setup. There is no technical reason why you can't preserve original dates through any kind of migration. Not sure why/where you experienced something different.
I expect nothing less from corporate IT
Very informative!
Thanks!
I politely disagree with SuperFriend Prasanna’s comment that ‘cloud is cheap’. (About 43:00). Please calculate the cost of 1 PiB of storage in cloud for 5 years, vs cost of storing same in a NetApp, and tell me which is cheaper. It’s not cheaper for me. I dare say the delta pays for a second NetApp! Open for discussion 😊
As for the story about the academics losing weeks or months of data: this is one where I slightly disagree with your takes, especially from the full episode if I recall correctly. I 100% agree that us IT professionals must backup all cloud-based data ourselves. It's our job to keep the data safe, and it's our job to know how things work & what a service includes. However, a lot of services target regular users who do not have in-depth IT knowledge, who could never judge a service & their backup policies, who don't know and who shouldn't _have_ to know about having to back up that data in the first place. All those types of services should be required to provide proper backup & restore methods along with hosting your data. You should be able to sue them for data loss if they don't or if they fuck it up. Even if your stance is that _everyone_ should know that you should create your own backups (which I don't subscribe to, actually), a lot of services & devices are designed in ways that makes it next to impossible for laymen (and even professionals) to determine whether or not there are backups or how to do backups themselves. Dear Service Provider: You want to host my data & profit from it? Then you take on the responsibilities that come with it, too.
Apart from that I really enjoyed listening to this series. Thanks to the both of you for all the insight & stories. Should have started with that 😁
Firmware fault can bring multiple drives fauty at once.... We are talking all drives faulty at once.... Saw this live... I wish my customer had backup 😅😅
So sad!
Listened via Spotify. The episode contains unqualified bashing of Promise storage arrays. Just to clarify: Promise manufactures a pro-sumer line (Pegasus models) and enterprise (mid tier?) (Vess and V-trak) line of products. While the Pegasus line supports basic RAID levels, it does not provide any kind of redundancy in terms of controllers, power supplies, and fans. It is not a suitable product line for businesses, especially any business that values their data. A Thunderbolt interface should not be considered stable, low latency connection. On the other hand, the Vess and V-trak lines are more robust, offering Fibre Channel or SAS connections, hot-swap dual controllers/power supplies/fans in the DAS models. IIRC, back in the day, Apple contracted Promise to manufacture their XSERVE RAID product. Granted, this is a traditional RAID array, not self-healing ZFS or cluster storage, but it does have redundancies that the Pegasus does not have. Regardless, fault-tolerance is not backup, and anything less than RAID6 (or RAID10) and backup to LTO is a poor choice. Sounds like Carbonite tried to throw Promise under the bus in order to deflect liability.
Two thoughts guys: 1. It is the day after International Backup Day - where are you guys??? ❣ 2. That DBA and "archive log mode" story is equivalent to (actually BEATS OUT) users I encounter who still believe you don't patch systems and applications as a part of maintenance. 😳 Separate thought: Any perspective you care to share on Backup coexisting with Antivirus packages? I'm personally dealing with some frustrations with .... "Overzealous" AV scanning, and I'm trying to strike the right balance between proper security and onerous performance hits. Thanks for the Podcast/RUclips feed! It's part of my Monday Morning routine!
Yea... I know. Problem is I've got like 10 plates spinning. Dropped the ball on that one. RE:AV.... The thing is none of them are actually their own antirus packages. They leverage someone else. Some even let you pick the AV package that runs. I like the idea of scanning backups before restoring.
Disk drives can only do 3 things. They can write, they can read, and they can fail.
I like it.
Cannot count the number of failed disk drives I've had in my 30+ year career. But I can count every failed tape I've had. I could count them with one hand.
The difficulty and importance of getting non-technical leaders to understand this cannot be overstated. I honestly had a director once claim that because we had a new EMC Symmetrix (only 1, so no offsite copy!) it was so reliable we didn't need backup. I pointed out that as long as there was a delete key on the keyboard, we needed backup. It was a gross oversimplification, but it was what he needed to hear to get the job done.
I love it! It is amazing how many times we have to explain something so simple.
😬 *Promosm*
Not sure what that means :)
If we're losing 2% of our files per year on optical media, why do all my professionally-manufactured CD's I bought 30 years ago work perfectly today, and why do 95% of all the CD-R's I burned years ago still work perfectly when I access them?
Much of the data loss is silent and not detectable by humans. It really depends on the application.
Regardless, a 2% data loss per year = a 20% loss of data every decade. That would be detectable by a human or a computer. Therefore, the sweeping claim is false.@@backupwrapup
@@backupwrapupI have 30 year old software discs that work fine. Those don’t work with data missing
@@rickybobby5153 Apples and oranges. Commercial data discs are made with a completely different process.
The plane story had me thinking about the "get in crash positions" scene in Airplane. ruclips.net/video/a5QBuJla5do/видео.html

PODCAST - GO BOX is awesome..... Better then home setup..... Maybe its the updated camera or light
Most definitely. I was very lucky to have them nearby when I realized I needed to record something.
I don't think I am in danger of having a billion dollar business failure.
If you listen to the story I tell in the episode, the billion-dollar failure was a lawsuit. And it was $2B! It's the largest such lawsuit lost by the inability to perform e-discovery from backups. While your company may not get such a lawsuit, it's not like I made up the number.
I use an external hard drive and unplug it after backing up for my p.c. I even keep a live usb if distro breaks. Cloud is just someone else's computer you store info on. Got a good point I have all 3 copies of data within 3 feet of me. P.c., laptop, and external.
Glad you learned something!
I keep a backup bootable hard drive and a live usb current distro or one I am testing in case distro breaks. I been watching salt n tar they dropped their external hard drive and lost premade videos. Employees can be bought. Security is there for a reason. Look at gta6 leak. They were just following orders at Chernobyl too. Red and blue lights should be flashing when turning off security measures. A cloud is just info on someone else's computer. I learned from toy story and backup work to personal computer. They brought the whole computer into pixar to save the movie after it got deleted. Like they don't own an external hard drive. A good backup should have system up and running asap.
Sounds good to me!
How often do hackers use the computers own encryption software to encrypt a computer? How often are hacks from permissions left on? The other main source of hacks I see are employees. Many people don't like their tech jobs so a years salary and they are selling out the company.
None, AFAIK. They install their own software so they can control it. As to permissions, most hacks could be prevented by basic security measures.
Really interesting conversation, had never thought of the prospect of law enforcement quarantining a DC and the knock on effect. Though definitely think you should be trying to scan your backups when they're taken, or soon after, rather than during recovery, unless that's your only option. Would be interested on your take on having air gapped recovery environments following an MVC (minimum viable company) concept.
I don't have a problem doing it then, but I also think you should do it on recovery, for exactly the reasons I stated in the video. You'll have a better dictionary by then. At backup time, the malware may be novel. I'd need more info on your other question.
TIL: RPA and RTA! Thanks guys! "When you have a cyber-attack, you'll spend your entire RTO/RPO just figuring out what needs to be restored" Brilliant common-sense thinking that you *don't* think about unless you do things like walk-throughs, DR exercises, etc.
Thanks! People don't think about that issue.
I certainly believe once people on internet found you both, it will be great for them... Best of luck, Keep posting
That's very kind of you. Feel free to spread the word!
First i am huge fan of your work you putting here. So please correct my understanding if i am wrong Replication is Replication with a splitter CDP / CRR --> Replication with splitter + snapshots at local/remote site respectively with VMax/Xtreme IO its snapshot on production & replicate (Async only to not to hamper performance) --- is this what is referred to as near CDP Question . Also can you guys please help us understand how vendors like veeam and rubrik can do replication and backup thing in one stream only... (At remote site) Do they take snapshots of replication snapshots & put it in .bck file.... Architecture is not clear
I would probably change the word snapshots to log. If it's snapshots, then it's near-CDP.
Finally, someone has articulated what many of us have been arguing with salespeople. Snapshots are not backups!
Nice to see you! I would say "ureplicated snapshots are definitely not backups. replicated backups can be a part of a good backup system."
Great discussion. I would stir the pot by saying that Synchronous replication means that the writes MUST be committed to all copies before the next write can occur. Anything else is Asynch. Let the games begin.
No argument from me!
Super
Thanks!

Wow this is interesting. I really want to get into M-Disc as an offline back up storage option.
I bet this is sacrilege with the M-disc creator in the video, but I would recommend normal bluray discs instead. Cheaper, and if it's M-discs on DVD you were thinking, a single layer bluray is five times larger than a DVD so it's a much more practical solution.
@@Henkibojj It may be bigger, but it was not designed to last as long as the M-Disc. And that's kind of the point.
I'm the 0.1% who back-up my mailbox. I use Thunderbird client to back-up my mailbox (fastmail) and local folders (off server and stored local) to archive old mail because I do not feel it's secure to store years worth of emails should I get hacked.
It seems Sarah has heard!
Glad to hear. She did a great job.
