How beavers support local wildlife | Forest of Dean
Our second set of beavers in the Forest of Dean have been settling in since being released in spring 2024.
Forest Waters manager Rob shares how they've started to impact the local environment and wildlife, providing a unique role to shape the landscape and local water systems.
It's a team effort with a group of volunteers ensuring the security of the beavers, while they remain in an enclosure.

The tallest tree in England
Просмотров 609Месяц назад
The tallest tree in England is 63 metres tall, a Douglas fir planted in 1874. Nutcombe Bottom in Somerset is home to some of England’s tallest trees, which you can admire along the Tall Trees Trail. The trail follows through a historic arboterum originally planted by the Crown. www.forestryengland.uk/nutcombe-bottom

Searching for nightjar in Haldon Forest Park
Просмотров 3025 месяцев назад
Forests are a patchwork of habitats, ranging from open spaces to thick forest cover. This provides homes for a variety of wildlife, including birds. Nightjar are a rare and elusive species that need heathland and open space to breed. Forestry England provide this habitat at Haldon Forest Park to protect the species and increase the opportunity to increase their numbers. As these birds are hard ...

With a changing climate the nation's forests are facing growing threats and risks from tree disease and pests. Forestry England are restoring forest following the legal action required to remove tree disease to create more dynamic, resilient woodland better adapted to deal with the climate in the future. Find out more about the steps taken to restore forest identified as diseased.
How we're caring for forests in a changing climate

The climate is changing and this is impacting the nation's forests. By planning for 50 years into the future, Forestry England are giving the forest a helping hand to change with the warming climate. By diversifying our mix of trees we can create more adaptable and resilient forests that can better cope with the challenges of growing tree diseases and pests, and extremes in weather.

    • @Kingsaxxy3872

Their fenced in only for a temporary time period, due to their population in the area being small they are closed in to prevent predation from local hunters( ergo Red Fox, Eagles, Badgers, etc) once they eventually grow they get released. Literally in Scotland they’re living like natural wild animals no fences because they grew in population, the fence is only temporary.

My hope and aspiration is that some of the kits will escape!! It's insane treating them as though they are a threat. They belong in Britain. So much fuss and bureaucracy over something that should be quite straightforward. I'm a great believer in soft release, but after that, open the fence and let them do their own thing. They will make their own - correct - decisions on where the best places are for building dams. Honestly, it's probably easier to import lions to a safari park than it is to release beaver BACK into the wild!!

Fencing could just be to keep them from getting killed by local predators, once the population grows in the areas they’ll be set free. Happened in Scotland I believe, fence em in for a bit then let em out when population is big enough.

Rewilding is one of the most important opportunities here in the uk. Not only are we returning swathes of the countryside back to its original habitats but also it’s a huge boost to jobs. Scotland reported a 400% increase in jobs because of Rewilding. It’ll become a booming sector creating hundreds if not thousands of new jobs while also restoring vast areas of habitats from forests to wetlands. More investment needs to be done to allow this while making sure protection of the environment is a high priority.

I have watched numerous videos on beaver being released in the UK, it seems they all are being released into enclosures. Are there any plans to actually release them into areas without enclosures? I am rather confused as to the logic of making basically huge beaver pens.

    • @ForestryEnglandWest
      @ForestryEnglandWest 4 месяца назад

At the moment, legal releases have to be in enclosures. When a change in government policy arrives allowing wild release, each enclosure project will have to be reassessed before the fencing can be removed to understand what the beavers impacts could be on the wider river basin. There are already (illegally released) wild beavers in Scotland and in south west England

  • @DavidRose-m8s

Well done. Also. For pastural land the key is to rein in the use of ruminant animal drench's to encourage natural population levels of dung beetles , both to soften the soil to depth, and to increase the soils organic matter level so much more effectively than a worm alone approach. For every 1% of soil organic matter increase the land will hold back 25mm more water from runoff. Beavers can catch water from that point, but keeping it out of the streams in the 1st place for slow subsoil release is part of a catchment systems approach. Do not underestimate the catchment water load, and fluvial pressure applied by pharmaceutical approach's to parasite control on stock, and the absence of stock in the 1st place destroying the soil sponge. Yes and avoiding unsustainably high stocking rates as too much of a good thing.

Awesome job. We need more people working in the natural surroundings all over the UK indeed the world. It is an employment opportunity Governments are missing out on. I feel these projects suffer lack of funding because they do cost a lot of money and unfortunately the people who run our lives are only interested in short term gains to boost popularity and not long term benefits. The long term benefits of rewilding and habitat management are absolutely enormous and have very far reaching consequences. If done properly everyone wins. I wish your project all the very best and hope you get funding for more and more of these projects in the future.

It's puzzling that dams and man-made weirs are being removed to encourage migration of fish and insects now beavers are being introduced to make more dams ....if you have a unwanted dam on your land can you remove it or do you have to put up with the flooding? There are lots of people posting videos from across the world of unwanted dams being removed and in some cases trapping and re release of problem beavers .I can see an ecological mess coming by well meaning animal lovers who don't have to put up with the inconvenience theses release can cause.just look at Australia for example......

What a load of rubbish and lies. The last independent reservoir inspection deemed both dams safe and no threat to life. FE have been anything but open with their plans. They have carried out a restricted public consultation before they had carried out research. Research/investigations are still ongoing despite there being no need for them. Minor repairs were required. Rather than do this FE in conjunction with the EA have spent hundreds and thousands of public money on consultants some who haven't even visited the Ponds. One set of advisors are expects and getting round laws that protect endangered species. The money they have spent could have more than repaired the dams. Anyone believing a word on this film is being wilfully mislead by FE. Allegedly they haven't made a decision on the Ponds but their actions suggest otherwise. Their referral to listening to the public is a pure lie. They have even said in writing that the public opinion is irrelevant and the public don't know what they are talking about. If anyone wants to read actual facts about this issue please visit #SaceCannopPonds - there are reports from independently engineers, a quote to repair dams, details of wildlife dependant on the Ponds etc.
