Getting into TV | The Podcast
Великобритания
Добавлен 7 окт 2013
Getting into TV is a podcast bought to you by Tom Dix, an assistant producer at BBC Studios. One of my biggest passions is helping break down the barriers of getting into the world of TV.
Each week I chat to a new TV professional in unscripted or scripted TV about their job role, their career so far, advice they can give, plus some general TV chat. Previous guests include Doctor Who producer Pete Levy, Sex Education production coordinator Eryn Parsons, Casualty 3rd AD Tereza Dvorakova, Loose Women researcher Jack Dinsley and Morning Live production coordinator Tommy Cowell.

Getting into TV is a series I hope helps those starting out in the industry. Each video I'll sit down with a new member of the industry, both in scripted and unscripted to open up the world just that little bit more.

Good podcast Guys - It's a strange industry we work in. Be nice to see more locations in Caerphilly being used. Penallta Parc for one is good for forest, lakes, open ground, dark sky and quite etc and fab car parks for base with good road access etc.
Thank you. It's strange but fun for sure.
Thanks for the video!
Absolute pleasure! Anything to help people
Very informative and very motivational! Thank you, I've really learnt alot!! ❤
You are so welcome!
Hello Tom, I've got a question. What websites or Facebook groups other than "People in TV: Runners" & Talent Manager, would you recommend to find job adverts?
I read about a 10-2, I didn't know that was even a thing. Does anyone even say that really? I don't like that this exists.
They do yes, it’s common set language
I want to be an Edit Assistant, I graduate in 2 months and have no idea how I am going to get there. I also got Avid Certified through my uni this year and it was free. Win Win.
Amazing
What other Facebook groups or websites you recommend for scripted/unscripted job adverts??
Definitely have a look at Talent Manager, LinkedIn is also good for connecting with talent managers in companies too
Figuring out how to get into the industry can be so overwhelming sometimes, but this video has been super informative! Thank you
Thank you, so glad
Thanks for another great video!!! Get the results you deserve = "promo sm" !!
Im just keen for a different vibe. I am living in my van full time and I’ve been hands on with so many different roles, I’m just keen to get out of mundane. I don’t have much film experience but I’m great helper and being positive energy. Im great problem solving. 🙌🙌🙌 - might give it a go if I can get hired. How much do you get paid as a runner? I have business insurance and driving license.
Useful stuff! Thank you Tom
Let’s gooooo
Really enjoyed this - such great insights. Thanks both.
thanks man
Thank you so much for making this runner series it’s so helpful
Really helpful, thank you dude. I’m a choreographer that loves film and I am adding a new string to the bow. Working my way up to AD. Thanks again, pal. 🙂👍🏻
No worries
Really enjoyable talk, really useful advice & great to hear Joe's story becoming a freelance editor!
Amazing glad it was good. I have a new one coming with Joe over the next couple if week with a director he works with ok Casualty too
I’m about to go to a TV shoot today and I’m thinking about talking to some of the people that work there but I’m unsure as to what to say. Do you have any advice?
Really insightful conversation, I totally agree i think in every industry storytelling is something that is valued. I am currently trying to break into the industry myself though i have quite varied experience but i am passionate about Film/TV and media production so thank you for the tips and insight, been really helpful! 😊
Happy to help
Was lovely hearing some of my former colleagues mentioned in this 😁 (Jenny and Jo - I used to be a PC in London radio drama too)
Oh I’m glad you enjoyed listening
Thanks for the effort of doing all of these videos :)
When I worked on casualty we had afternoon tea, they brought around fruit and chocolate and crisps and stuff.
Hi Tom, I love this video you have made, the interview with James is fantastic. Last year I changed careers as I wanted to get into the industry for years and finally made the opportunity for myself. I'm consistently hunting for runner positions, using my connections and self studying along with college studying. In less than a year I have been on 5 productions and 2 were HETV, I loved ever second of it and I now am gaining more and more opportunities. It's not easy, and money is tight, but when I am on a production I learn a lot and now I'm driven to aim for 3AD for now. But I'm keen to try new areas in production.
man... BIG thanks, BIIIIIIG thanks :*
Thanks for the great video Tom, really informative.
Maaannn, to think we had conversations at uni or in Tim Hortons about the industry, RUclips etc. Keep this up Tom, you're such a inspiration and help to others!
Thank you so much Callum, I wouldn't say I'm an inspiration but thank you ahah. Hope you're good

Brilliant chat with Pete, learnt a lot from this from someone who wants to go into the editing side. Really inspiring & honest answers! 😊👏
Thank you, Tom, this is brilliant. As somone who has always wanted to work in Doctor Who, hearing from Pete Levy has been incredibly informative. Thanks both for your time!!
Glad you found it useful! Hope you get to work it on it one day!
This was fantastic, great video Tom!
Thank you Matt, I’m glad you think so
Yay! thanks for the vid
Great resource. Thank you!
So super helpful. I got mt first runner role offered today for a set day tomorrow. I'd heard of call sheets but never looked at one. I looked at it and thought I need a video to help me work some of this out 😄. And here you are
Hi Tom, Love the videos :) It would be great to hear from someone who did a career change and got into tv and how they did it. It kind of feels like if you didn't get experience at uni/when young it's impossible to get (especially when working a normal job). Is there a more sensible way to transition or do you have to take a bit of a leap of faith to get started ?
Thanks for the idea! I'll see what I can do. I'm starting a new series of these video very soon
this was brilliant, thanks so much. will get onto watching the rest of the series soon!
Glad you found it of use
I live around the London area and interested in doing an apprenticeship. I have researched Quite abit but it's slightly overwhelming the amount of different short courses/apprenticeships, they also seem really competitive to get onto 🥲. If I was in wales I'd definitely look at the apprenticeship scheme you mentioned in the video but if you know any other schemes around the London area or down south it would be so helpful. Thank you for the videos! X
Hi Ella, so sorry I only just replied. I'm not 100% on apprenticeships in London but I do know that the BBC just opened up a production trainee scheme on the BBC Academy page. It could be worth a look?! Maybe have a look at production companies based in London and see if they offer anything? I hope this helped.
Wow, this was brilliant thanks! I'm currently looking for my first job in the industry and your channel is a great way to prepare myself! 😊
Glad it was of use
This was really helpful, thank you Tom!
My pleasure
Thanks so much for this video! really helpful!
More of these!!
This is some super helpful info Tom! I found your channel through a Facebook post you did earlier today. I'm looking at breaking into the industry for the first time myself and will definitely take everything you've said on board. Thank you!
I've been wanting to watch your videos for a while, and I finally got to it, and I binged through quite a few of them today (especially the Being a Runner series), and I really appreciate that fact that they're a thing! Definitely looking forward to any future content you may be putting out, whether it more interviews, or even 'tutorials' like the How to read a Call Sheet video. :)
Thank you so much for the comment, it means the world to me that they are a genuine help for people. I have a new video coming out tomorrow looking at the role of a researcher in unscripted TV, so I hope that is of interest maybe?
@@GettingintoTV_ThePodcast That's great to hear, I'll be sure to check it once it's out ^^
This channel is a great find. Good to see what people do in the industry
Hey, thank you so much. I have a few more videos coming out soon that are all industry related so I hope you like them too
found this so helpful! thanks again :)
Glad we helped
What is your shift pattern like, Monday-Friday or do you work weekends or is it just random? :) xox
It tends to be 12 hour days Monday to Friday, with the occasional day working on a weekend
Great video. Love both of your content! Thanks guys!!
Thank you, I hope it was of use
For someone that wants to go into filmmaking and hopes to start out as a runner this was a great video.
Thank you, I’m glad you found it useful
Thanks for the video, really helpful :)
My pleasure. Glad it was helpful
Great video! I’m a first year at USW 😁✌🏼 it would be interesting to see the application process and how someone can get into that industry
Hey Callum, thanks for watching. I'll be sure to do this in the future
Can you do a video on a day in the life of a runner and what to expect? Love this series as I used to do Extra/background acting work and I’m interested in being a runner. ✌️
I can do that for you. Once I’m home from work on Saturday I’ll get started on a plan
@@GettingintoTV_ThePodcast Great, looking forward to watching more of your content :)
I thought you'd like to know that today's video will be 'A day in the life of a runner in scripted'
