Word Diff Mode | A Better Tool for Writers Who Edit as They Go
Finally! I'm doing a video about my little word diff counter. Talk about procrastination.
Here's the blog post that goes along with this video: chrismaiorana.com/word-diff-counter/
How do you measure productivity in writing? Or, how do you know when is a good time to stop working and take a break?
If I rush through a piece of writing in a sprint to the finish, the output quality starts to degrade.
This is why writers like to set word count goals. For example, 500 to 1000 words daily can ensure solid daily output without burning out.
A word count goal does a few things well:
1. Provides a simple system for daily work
2. Measures output
3. Signals stopping time

Emacs Micro Lesson 11: Personal ispell dictionary
Просмотров 2866 месяцев назад
Today, however, I’m just talking about a spell-checker in Emacs: ispell. This spell-checker comes pre-installed if you’re running Emacs on Linux. Mac users may require some additional configuration. chrismaiorana.com/personal-ispell-dictionary/ Apparently, I use a lot of uncommon words in my writing. So the default ispell dictionary will often flag me for a word I spelled correctly! So it’s far...
Text Editor Judo | One Sentence Per Line (OSPL)
Просмотров 3566 месяцев назад
In this video, we’re going to take a look at a different way of formatting paragraphs in Emacs (or any text editor): writing one sentence per line. This is an alternative to visual line wrapping, though you can still use wrapping if you want, I think it’s unhelpful in this instance. Read the whole post from my website here: chrismaiorana.com/one-sentence-per-line/ Poets write in lines, and pros...
Emacs Is Like a Warm Blanket

Going back to Emacs feels like being wrapped up in coziness. I talk about different tools you can use to get things done. And what makes a tool attractive to you? Does it matter what tool you use, or is it mostly a matter of intuition. Let's explore this topic. chrismaiorana.com/
Emacs Micro Lesson #10 | Open line (because it's good)
Просмотров 4687 месяцев назад
That's right. It's another Emacs micro lesson coming at you. Today, we're going to take a look at inserting new lines with Ctrl-o, that's right C-o. This will run the wonderful "open-line" function to create a new line in your document without changing your position. So you can keep working more quickly and more efficiently. All the time.
Emacs | Easy Accent Marks
Просмотров 440Год назад
You can enable support for many of these characters by changing your input method in Emacs. However, that’s outside the scope of what we’re doing here. In this example, we want to keep English as our input method but simply insert tildes and other accent marks over characters in our documents. This would be of use to anyone who uses Emacs to compose documents, particularly those who might need ...

Emacs | Creative non-destruction
Просмотров 682Год назад
Creative non-destructive editing means your Emacs interface reflects your own natural desire to save your hard work and file it away somewhere for later. You don't have to trash things just because you don't need them right away. Set it aside for later, non-destructively. Org mode effortlessly supports this kind of editing. Emacs | What's The Point of `Point'?
Просмотров 1 тыс.Год назад
In Emacs, you may see your cursor referred to as “point”. But you may have likewise seen references to a cursor. So what’s the deal? Which is it, point or cursor? “Point” and “cursor” refer to slightly different things in Emacs but can both be used to generally describe the blinky thing where you type. Let’s get into it. Emacs Micro Lesson #9 | Start Process
Просмотров 317Год назад
That’s right. Let’s take a common scenario. You’re doing some work in Emacs. Maybe you’re programming. Maybe you’re writing a novel. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing. You want to start playing some music or run a backup of your files in the background. You can open up a different app or your terminal emulator and run a command. What if you could run that background process from Emacs with a ...

Org-present mode is a minor mode in Emacs that helps you create an "ultra minimalist" slide presentation from a simple org file. I used this tool many years ago when I first started making Emacs videos. And I thought it was time to revisit it. So here we go! Follow along as I do the install and try out some commands. Let's get some basics down. ✍Check out my substack: chrismaiorana.substack.com...
Emacs | Giving Org Mode Some Character(s) 😈

How Your Micro Strategies Will Win You The Race Over Time
Easy with vim. daw + ge + p daw - cut around(with space) a word under the cursor (placed on any index of that word) ge - go to the end of previous word p - paste after the cursor position (to the right)
It's 2 years later, and the upcoming Emacs 30 release now includes a command to open files "using the external command that is most appropriate for the file(s) according to the system conventions." The command is `dired-do-open`, and its keybinding in Dired is "E".
And 1 mode
Thank you for creating a bite-sized video about org-roam. I've been really demotivated to watch a slow 40 min video on org-roam to get started. Your video pushed me to start!
Very helpful demo. It was not possible for me to understand this from the official documentation without an example like this.
No way to mix the words like that dude, useless😂
It’s really useless, I never used transposed and i have been on emacs for more than a decade :D
thanks for this quick guide
^g is the kill character in Emacs, I've often thought changing the interrupt character from ^c to ^g is a natural move.
Interesting and short video. Thanks. (Programming in C you probably need the `build-essential` package, as it will install a c compiler for you)
Thank you Chris
For the organization and nodes/scenes you could probably use org roam to build similar nodes.
OrgMode Rules!
I never heard anyone say "grandma linux". I've been using linux and bounced around lubuntu often and never heard that, please point me to them so I can properly set them straight lol
what keystroks to do this: func()arg {...} to func(arg) {...} I mean to move the close paren to the end of arg without doing M-t thrice?
thanks, this actually can improve my workflow. but, how did you make the links opened in a new split windows?
Thanks for sharing! I think it’s great you’re putting the code out there, even if you think it might not be perfect. Gives others the opportunity to learn, and also showcases how people approach these problems without knowing the ins-and-outs of elisp. Sometimes looking at elisp can be intimidating. I find it refreshing seeing someone just put code out there that they created for themselves!
Really cool! :)
3:55 Insert Key? So... this program is unusable on a laptop?
Real shame you're wasting your time on softtware maintained by genocidist invaders of others lands and child murderers
Thank you very much. I was all over the place with unicode characters, changing input method, etc. This is much easier.
I love org mode but the lack of mobile support is killing me, makes me go back to obsidian
I'm using an app called Orgzly revised. It made me fully commit to Emacs.
I think smartphone support is coming with emacs 30
@@abhinavjha33 oh i am already fully invested in org mode, could not imagine a better workflow
delayed gratification
I used one sentence per line for many years, but recently switched to one paragraph per line. Emacs has pretty good support for line wrapping now (visual-line-mode + adaptive-wrap-prefix-mode). Moreover, Git (and Magit) has a “--word-diff” switch to highlight only the specific words that changed on a line in diffs, and I’ve made this default. This is also what most collaborators do, so now I don’t have to regularly reformat shared documents. One sentence per line still has some benefits (e.g. easier keybindings), but I just find it more ergonomic to read a paragraph as a paragraph.
Thanks... really interesting suggestion... I used Ispell a few days ago for my unofficial Italian translation of the org-mode compact guide !!! 💪
i completely agree
Perhaps learn the OS before showing us you don't know many of the apps.
I've only recently started writing a novella with doom emacs and ive been really liking the process so far.
WordPress has a WYSIWYG editor which is Gutenberg or TinyMCE depending on your version. Did you try soft brakes, with shift enter? Also if you want I can help you with making a plugn that removes those multiple newlines.
Everyone is saying use '!' in dired to run an external program on the file the point is on (or marked files). Some programs will block Emacs until they're done, so you probably want '&' (async equivalent). You can set the default program that '!' or '&' will suggest for the file type with something like: (pcase system-type ('gnu/linux (setq dired-guess-shell-alist-user '(("\\.mp4\\'" "mpv") ("\\.mkv\\'" "mpv")))) ('darwin (setq dired-guess-shell-alist-user '(("" "open")))))
neal stephenson is using emacs for writing fiction.
Yes. I believe he was writing longhand first and then transcribing into Emacs.
Awesome. I do some stuff likewise.
I find it interesting that you think of the editor as a transcriber. A simple vehicle. I do so much of my active work in it that I feel much more like it's my workspace and place where I'm engaging in thinking. Often my notes are effectively an internal monologue or conversation with myself. But at nearly any point my org-mode notes easily intersect with some activity which can result in a pretty detailed export for some other system. I agree, a most snuggly warm blanket.
Learning Doom emacs is difficult when you haven't started with a modal editor like vi. So while I'm trying to learn it, sublime text is still my warm blanket I jump under when I need to stop remembering how to get around and just type.
I also used Sublime before Emacs. The Emacs keybindings are easier than the Vim keys. If you can configure Doom to use Emacs keys it might make for a smoother adjustment. It couldn't hurt to try.
I also like this behavior to not move the cursor or put you in insert mode while inserting a new line. However, open-line always ends up inserting new lines below the cursor, while I often want to just insert them above or below, without breaking up the text. I wrote two custom functions to do that, maybe someone else could use them too: ``` (defun my/newline-below () "Always inserts a newline below the point." (interactive) (save-excursion (move-end-of-line nil) (open-line 1))) (defun my/newline-above () "Always inserts a newline above the point." (interactive) (if (bolp) (newline) (save-excursion (beginning-of-line) (newline)))) (keymap-global-set "C-}" #'my/newline-below) (keymap-global-set "C-{" #'my/newline-above) ```
vim/evil has o and O as ”insert line above” and ”insert line below”, and these do move the point. However it seems there isn’t exactly this functionality natively. One approach would be to yank or delete an empty line (’yy’ or ’dd’) and use p/P to put it above/below. This doesn’t move the point or enter insert-mode, but you do need to move to get the empty line. You could also just map these commands, if they aren’t already mapped. I’m not sure if they still are. I knew that vanilla emacs had some navigation macros, but I didn’t realise very vim-feeling (despite it actually not being in vim at all) macros like this are also part of vanilla emacs. Cool to know!
How did you get the headers to show up? I noticed that the exported ODT has page styles called 'OrgFirstPage' and 'OrgPage' so I tried changing those to what I wanted, but that didn't work, and every page uses the 'default' page style when exported. also not sure I understand how to get the exporter to use style.xml versus content.xml
what command did you execute to open these categories?
I have also been looking for an app you can annotate with handwriting on linux, thank you
04:51 => "Placeholder" is the word you want. But, what appl/program are you using to show yourself on the computer/laptop camera? This camera app seems to be very cool.
This is really nice video. In the meantime, you can try org builtin pomodoro timer, this will do all you are trying to do automatically
Can you create a video how to change the look of emacs since I'm seeing a lot of videos how to use org mode but not a lot of configuration on themes
Thanks!
Is there anyway to keep the ai-chat bot from exploring the internet for other questions that have nothing to do with the website a user is on? Nothing worst than to be paying for someone asking questions that have nothing to do with your product or scope.
I think the .git in the project.git directory name is a convention that indicates the directory is used as a bare repo. I don't think it is mandatory.
Anything to say at this point?
Thank you
This video saved me a lot of time. Thank you.
I been using lubuntu at least 3 years my favorite
i think similiar. That is the way improve year by year :)
vim can do it
actually vim can do a lot more lmao
