That was an unusual solo by Harold Mabern. The recordings of this group show Mabern experimenting quite a bit with different "feels." There are some performances where he kind of appropriates Wes' single note --> chord --> octave solo structure, which is interesting to hear. Here, Mabern seems to be working something out that doesn't really swing (at times), on purpose. It's almost like the feel a rock player would have. There's something "straight" about; again, like a rock keyboardist (Elton John) who is punctuating ON, THE, BEATS, or even like a metronomic classical pianist. It's a good choice, and it contrasts well with Wes' total ass-kicking, otherwordly swing over the bossa nova beat (and over every other kind of beat). Very cool. I don't think Mabern was an ideal partner for Wes, but they're all undoubtedly great musicians, so this group gives a different angle for Wes to work with than, say, the Wynton Kelly Trio, the Melvin Rhyne/Jimmy Cobb duo (who seemed to get Wes cooking especially well), or the Tommy Flanagan and Hank Jones accompaniments. Unlike some people who loathe the progressively commercial direction of Wes' studio recordings, I like how Wes' discography has a lot of different settings, because he always found how to fit in and then elevate the situation. Wes, man. What a remarkable artist. I never tire of listening to him. I've listened to so much music over the years, most of which I've gotten rid of (CDs), but I've held onto (or re-purchased) the Wes stuff, because when I listen to it after exploring all sorts of other music I think to myself, "Yeah, this is the good stuff. This is why I listen to music."

I had the pleasure of watching Wes perform his musical magic several times back in the 60s in Philadelphia. Quite often I would join Wes during a break and found him to be highly intelligent and friendly. You can see by the smile on his face that he loves what he is doing. Pure joy comes through his playing. He was one of a kind.
