The Remarkable Life of Thomas Fowell Buxton 'The Liberator'
On the wall in a side-chapel of Norwich Cathedral a modest plaque reads - ‘Remember Thomas Fowell Buxton Bt. Following a sell out talk in The Forum, Norwich, with the support of the Buxton family we are able to present a recording of Dr Alison Dow's talk so everybody can hear her bringing to life the story behind this plaque. Alison w looks at the life of Thomas Fowell Buxton and the Norfolk and Norwich community that inspired him an...

Greetings! The Photos you use of Harlequin, Columbine, Pantaloon and Clown are from a group called The Stark Ravens Historical Players. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area in America! We perform annually at an event called the Great Dickens Christmas Fair. It is a wonderfully unique event where one steps into the very pages of Charles Dickens. The fair boasts hand crafted wares and several stages of entertainments. The Pantomime is performed in a historical Victorian manner upon the Victoria and Albert Stage. This season we are to perform Puss in Boots. Thank you so much for including us in your most excellent documentary of Pantomime. The cast has enjoyed it immensely. If you ever find yourself in San Francisco during the holidays, please come say Hello!!

It's a pity we cant put all that wasted water power into generating some hydro elecrticity, New Mills in the peak district have done a community project generation hydro electricty, surplying the local co-op, and any surplus electricity gets sold throught the national grid .

Back in the early 80’s I took a temporary job at the Maids Head hotel and there were stories of a tunnel that once ran underneath Tombland from the hotel to the monastery. Never found out whether there was any truth in this, story was often embellished with an account of it being an escape route and that monks were once deliberately trapped down there?!

Another pub now closed and in residential use is the James I 39 Drayton Road (corner of Ropemakers Row). In the 70’s my parents would take me and my sister for a summer evening walk to Wensum Park then we would have a shandy at the pub. Between ‘79 and ‘82 my best mate at school lived there as his parents ran the pub. Ironically, in 1983 I joined my first pub darts team in the local Norwich leagues and yes, it was the James I, played one league season then we moved over to the British Legion on Aylsham Road

The Queens Arms on the corner of Edward Street and Magdalene Street was an absolute dive in the 80’s, you never went in there unless you looked homeless or part of the local thug/criminal element lol. I went in when it changed to the cafe many years later when I went to a gig at the old Anglia TV Studios

Thank you for increasing the awareness of them, and lets make no mistakes there are tunnels under the city leading to places, there is across the country. Our ancient city will be no different however as with all truth it is often mixed with a level of imagination and therefore somewhat obscured.
