Group Relations: Theory and Practice
США
Добавлен 30 ноя 2020
This channel is for people interested in Group Relations theory and practice. This may include academics, students, leaders, and others who better wish to understand how the systems they inhabit impact them, and how they might impact those systems. Also known as Systems Psychodynamics, Socioanalytic or Tavistock theory, Group Relations is both a theory and a method. The theory is rooted in Open Systems theory, Psychoanalytic theory, and the work of Wilfred Bion. The first section posted here highlights the basics of group relations theory, practice, and research. Other sections focus on various applications and practice of Group Relations (e.g., Role Analysis Series), and theories that build on group relations (e.g., Adaptive Leadership series, and Eco-Leadership series). Upcoming videos will explore various applications of group relations and related theories to understanding the wider social context.

Thanks for your comment Saadiq! I'm glad you found it useful.
WHY IS HE IN TANZANIA?????? "Today I travel from London to Tanzania to support and learn from leaders of NGOs in the region "
The narrator states, "those who wrote the (anti-CRT) legislation don't understand what CRT is." No evidence was provided for this assertion. It seems that it's a way to portray dissent as a result of ignorance and not a form of legitimate disagreement. In other words, dehumanizing the opposition.
I disagree. Evidence for that assertion is provided throughout the video. The fact that much of the anti-CRT legislation is focused on banning CRT in k-12 schools where it is NOT taught, suggests that those proposing it don't understand what it is. The fact that the legislation is often vague and confusing is further evidence. I am all for legitimate disagreement and dissent. What I am suggesting here is that the form this particular dissent has taken is not fully rational and not based on any actual facts or occurrences, but rather on fear. The word "ignorance" is yours, and not one I have used in this video.
@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 You support legitimate disagreement and dissent. One clarification before I respond to your message: on what basis could someone legitimately oppose CRT?
@@andrewpirr your question as to how one might legitimately oppose CRT seems bogus to me. Academics disagree all the time about theories and attempt to offer data to refute it. What I find disturbing about the anti-CRT groups I discussed in my video, is not their dissent, but their hypocrisy and radicalism. They do not aim to counter the ideas expressed in CRT, but aim to ban discussion of it, or books about it altogether. It is a very anti-democratic approach.
@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 The question is valid. Asserting that it is "bogus" without evidence is not an argument. If a person can not respond to a valid question, he or she demonstrates the weakness of his or her position. I'll repeat the question once, on what basis would you consider opposition to CRT legitimate?
excellent. I have been interested in Bion's work for decades as a "cult information specialist". I always pronounced his name "Bee-on", so will look into it again.
true, I mispronounced his name. Glad you found the video useful.
O termo ecoliderança foi criado em 2007 por educadores do Instituto Palavrações, de Estrela-RS, com a criação do Projeto Ecoliderança: Construindo uma visão de futuro sustentável, desenvolvido com centenas de jovens e adultos.
Thanks. His surname is commonly pronounced as "BE-on" (not BI-on as in bionic). Also, you may want to include some of Bion's works in your references- secondary sources are never great. Appreciate your work.
Yes, I am aware. Unfortunately I couldn't make the edits without losing credit for the views, so I'll have to live with the mistake.
SUPERB LECTURE,THANKYOU
you're welcome! Glad you found it useful.
So gun laws are historically racist and current gun laws if not explicitly racist are used disproportionately against minorities. So why are you pro gun control?
Bull. We all know who is creating these mass shootings. Nice white wash.
Presenting "suggested Basic Assumptions" are not legitimate. Taking such licence to iterate Bion's work is inappropriate and unethical. Adding to Bion's work should be peer reviewed. Krista Moran Member A.K. Rice
I beg to differ. I don't believe the theory (or any theory, for that matter) was ever intended to be static and unchanging (an "originalist" interpretation), but rather to respond to realities in the world. Proposing new basic assumptions, as the authors I referred to did, in no way appropriates or diminishes Bion's work, but is rather intended to expand upon and apply Bion's work in new ways, to deal with new social realities. You are, of course, free to disagree.
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 Peer review WAS the standard when adding to original work. This is especially important when links are placed on an organization's website dedicated to Bion's work. We shall see.
@@kristamoran4181 Please look at the citations in the video and the list of references. All of these "additions" to the theory, do indeed come from peer reviewed journals in the field of group relations.
Got into Bion's work when thinking about the game Crusader Kings III.
I don't know the game, but glad it brought you here!
This was incredibly useful - thank you
I'm glad you found it useful! thanks for your comment.

The assertion that an entire race is conspiring to oppress and subjugate the victim class is right out of the nazi playbook. The assertion that history is being suppressed is thoroughly debunked by the fact that the history in question is common knowledge, and always has been. "More important, as critical race theorists we adopt a stance that PRESUMES that racism has contributed to ALL contemporary manifestations of group advantage and disadvantage along RACIAL lines, including differences in income, imprisonment, health, housing, education, political representation, and military service. Our history calls for this PRESUMPTION." "Words That Wound: Critical Race Theory, Assaultive Speech, and the First Amendment" by Matsuda, Lawrence III, Delgado, and KIMBERLE' WILLIAMS CRENSHAW Those are their words from their intellectual papers: It is the entire foundation of the premise. CRT promotes the notion that the fact that a group is measurably superior is proof that everybody in that group is guilty; and, that a group being inferior is proof that everybody in that group is a victim. Further: this principle projects through time; asserting that what happened to the long dead projects onto the guilt or victimhood of the living; even if the living never experienced it at all........... CRT uses history and statistics to justify using government force to implement racial discrimination. CRT obviates the need for any thought, word or act of racism as proof of their presumed verdict. All they need is their preferred race measuring less favorably than another. Regardless of the cause: they declare their favored race to be victims of the other. Then they would use real government enforced discrimination in response to their presumed discrimination; altering laws, policies and practices to favor their preferred race. All for the stated purpose of forcibly making the measurements between races identical. The operative question is whether you support using government force to implement racial discrimination. All the rest is academic. My answer is no.
Doesn't matter what else CRT is; as long as it is a propaganda tool for a nationwide movement blaming their troubles on an entire race, it has no place in government; including government schools. If you want to teach militant racial chauvinism; you'll have to do it outside government institutions and without government agents.
@MichaelCoffee It seems pretty clear to me from your comment (and from my analytics) that you have not actually watched the video. I'm happy to engage with people who take the time to watch the video in its entirety and then want to explore what it means. I am less inclined to engage in debate with those who can't be bothered to actually listen to what I am saying or learn anything about the topic beyond the "talking points" of politicians who also have little to no understanding of the subject, and only wish to fire up the base, and sew divisiveness.
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 Okydoky. You refuse discourse. Noted. Thanks.
@@michaelpcoffee that is a projection. Discourse requires listening, and you have not listened to my video or reply.
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 So; I forced you to refuse. I am powerful, indeed! The operative question is: Do you support using government force to implement racial discrimination? All the rest is academic.
@@michaelpcoffee Thank you for your responses. They actually prove many of the points that I make in my video. If you watched the video, you might understand what they are. To answer your question--no, I do not support using government force to implement racial discrimination--this is why I made the video. CRT also challenges the use of government force to implement racial discrimination. Racial discrimination has been embedded in our legal and governmental institutions from the start. That is what CRT is saying. I challenge you to watch the video and learn something.
THANK YOU 🙏
thank you!
Excellent
thank you!
Bion was drafted in WW1, not WW2. Which now makes me doubt all the information in this video....
You might wish to take a look at this reference: 100years.tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/key-figures/?v=79cba1185463. I did not go into all the details of Bion's life--he served in both WW1 and WW2. I focused on his work at the Tavistock clinic for the purposes of this video.
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 I mean it's semantics, but he served in a fighting position in WW1 while he focused on therapy in WW2. It's like saying "I served in Afghan, I made aircraft parts in Ohio."
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 Although I was being facetious, I did find the video excellent.
@@andycopland3179 glad you enjoyed it in the end. Facetiousness doesn't always translate in the written word...
@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 I know, I do apologise. I remember vaguely studying Bion in college and we are having a tough time at work within the group dynamics (I wrote that first comment from work, maybe I let all the negativity get to me? 🤣) and wanted a little refresher to see if I could implement some changes within the group structure. Very informative. 👍
Tracy, this is awesome!
thanks Ara!
Fantastic video. Thank you!
Thanks Ihan! Glad you liked it! Please feel free to share!
On whose authority did you change Bion's theory????????? MEAKNESS????????? Surely 'scapegoating' should be promoted to basic assumptions before meekness. Did you pull it out of a hat??? What research is your assertion/hypothesis based on. This is bogus b*llshit!! CLASSIC Argument from Silence. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_silence Will be in touch.

@@grouprelationstheoryandpra2395 your welcome
Was he object relations like guntrip? More melanie klien please. Sounds like scapgoating as the group may pick the " othered person". Sounds like family therapy the" identified patient" ; not reality based but putting the problem on others. The f60.81 narcissist avoids their dependency by the use of entitlement. They are extremely dependent on others for validation , admiration or magical thinking (God like figure).
Hi Ed: Thanks for your interest. Bion was actually in training analysis with Melanie Klein and worked closely with her. And yes, I think the idea of the "identified patient" in family therapy is very similar to how we talk about people being used in groups to fulfill the group's purpose. They are both systems theories in the end...
Such an interesting concept. Only wish the narrator spoke a bit slower, I find it so hard to follow, had to stop the video and put it back several times.
thanks for your feedback Antonia. The concepts are actually quite complex, so not such a bad idea to review it a few times!
it is possible to slow down the speed of the video, under settings-> playback speed
Thank you very much for animating and explaining such an important topic in a clear way.

Dr Hugh Crichton-Miller founded the first Tavistock Clinic in 1920, applying what he had learned treating shell shock victims during the Great War to provide treatment to civilians with nervous disorders. Though influenced by Freud and Jung, he also used his own medical experience and his faith to guide his approach. In 1932 Bion joined the Tavistock Clinic and was initially employed as an assistant doctor without pay. He began training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy under JA Hadfield. Bion founded the OTHER clinic for Human Relations after the end of the second world war. When he left the army he returned to the Tavi. Here he took control of the Professional Committee and instituted radical policies of democracy where all senior staff had to be elected to post, founded the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, began further experiments with groups, started another training analysis but this time under Melanie Klein, relocated the Tavi from its temporary war-time location to a new premises at 2 Beaumont Street and re-organised the Tavi to get it ready for joining the NHS, not least by recruiting former military colleagues Jock Sutherland and John Bowlby.
True. Nor did I say he founded the Tavistock Clinic, but rather the Tavistock Insitute for Human Relations--they are connected, but not the same insitution. See: 100years.tavistockandportman.nhs.uk/key-figures/?v=79cba1185463
It’s Bion. Like Bee-on not By-on
Ha - my first thought too.
