    When the projectors used 100 years before, were also this loud and noisy, how can one speak about "silent film"?

    • @turbokatzenburg5732
      @turbokatzenburg5732 2 года назад

      A standard film projector is nowhere as loud as the IMAX projectors are. IMAX uses compressed air to help hold the film flat in the gate area and extremely large fans and cooling pumps to keep the lamp ane reflector cooled down enough. A regular 35 or 35/70 projector has no compresssed air and only rarely used water cooling. There are lots of videos of standard projectors on youtube to compare with.

    Does the projector still move the optics up from below? Does the late Jim Crooks still get credit for the tilted dome and the selection of the first star projector and in particular the use of IMAX. I used to travel with him and almost every business trip included some way to visit a planetarium. I was able to get tours with him and it was the first planetarium that was fully digital. I haven't been there in more than 20 years and remember the service held for him when he passed away. www.findagrave.com/memorial/172140926/james-wesley-crooks

    I visited my collegue several times back in 1979 where he worked with this projector (see my photo). The Omnimax sign is still on the projector. Too bad I can't leave any pictures.... those were the days. George Balfoort Amsterdam, former projectionist at Bellevue Cinerama, Amsterdam, Holland.

    Why do this film roll down from the outside? The begining should be in the midde, inside. Or because it is so old?

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro 8 лет назад

      +Bence Jávorszki-Farkas The first IMAX platters didn't have center feed. These early ones feed from the outside and need to be rewound after each showing.

    • @sheldonspock5566
      @sheldonspock5566 6 лет назад

      yeah i noticed it right away too :) He was probably around at the time of Cinerama already On the other hand, Cinerama didn't last long and quickly dropped the 3 x 35mm projection and turned to one single 70mm / 5perf projection, and IMAX is a further development of 70mm (increasing the size to 15 perf) so I guess you can say that Cinerama is IMAX's grandpa :)

    Imax on a huge screen film or digital still is the best image you can get film is gone get used to it I hope they keep film for the museums!

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro 8 лет назад

      +RKoen2006 IMAX is film only so far. There's currently no such thing as true digital IMAX and won't be until movies can be shot, processed, and projected digitally in a bare minimum of 8K resolution, ideally 12-16K. Current digital projection systems are too low resolution to be considered IMAX (remember, 4K = 35mm film) even if they have the IMAX name.

    15/70 film has an 18K digital rating. 2/4K digital projectors are quite low-brow in quality. This is an early Imax projector, built like a tank the amazing IMAX film quality!

    • @sheldonspock5566
      @sheldonspock5566 6 лет назад

      dual 4K laser IMAX projection is pretty darn good. People like to throw around all kinds of bloated resolution figures comparing film to DCP, in reality it doesn't work that way, because there are many elements other than resolution... lighting is one

    There's a science museum somewhere in Fort Worth Texas that runs a domed IMAX theater, and one of the coll features they built into the auditorium was glass walls on the projection room so that, as you walked the pathway to enter the auditorium, you'd get a look at the IMAX projector.

    Film is true cinema,digital sucks and is just tv,video projected.Texture,colour and deep field nothing beats true film projection.

      70mm IMAX film provides a beautiful picture, but it's sadly going away. This film format ultra high level resolution probably cannot be duplicated with digital projection. Film is very often imitated, but is NEVER DUPLICATED with any digital format "LIEMAX" system. Digital is a gimmick as far as I am concerned.
