    Hi Bruce, thanks for your video. Could you kindly let me know how you carried out the port extension for this exercise? Were both the adapter and pcb attached to the VNA when setting electrical delay? Many thanks in advance for your reply.

    I owned the Panasonic back in the 90s and remember one drawback that it had. If I remember right the IF is 2MHz and on shortvawe it would pull in the image station from the band beside the wanted band. Weaker but still very anoying. Very sensitive though. Thanks for the comparison. Three very good radios and a lovely place you have there.

    I used to have the Superadio 3. Best portable DX radio from the 1990's on AM. Now I have a CCRadio 2e which has the best AM signal to noise ratio I have heard so far. The difference is that you have to turn the volume up on a weak signal, whereas you didn't on the SR 3.

    There are two other methods of measuring impedance. The method shown in this video is most accurate around the 50 ohm point (S11). Putting the component in series between Port 0 and Port 1 is used for higher values of impedance, and the shunt, whereby the Port 0 and Port 1 are connected straight thru, and the component is connected from that straight thru to ground. Mostly used for less then 50 ohms... W0QE has an excellent video on this very subject. "Three methods to measure impedance with the NanoVNA".. Thanks for the video

    In my opinion, am and fm are nearly dead, i might see almost all stations disappear in my lifetime. But I still have a strong desire to have stuff that works. It irks me that it seems car audio antennas aren't the best but there's not a lot of expertise when it comes to anything aftermarket that might be an improvement.

    You fail to acknowledge the tone controls are very important for reception the SR2. Bass helps greatly in bringing stations out of the static and reduction of the same helps eliminate sideband splatter. The difference between the SR2 and Panasonic is next to nil.

      Their antennas actually are aligned for each reception. The RF-2200’s gyro antenna is being rotated, so there’s no need to rotate the radio itself - unlike the other radios.

    The superb Performance of the Panasonic RF 2200. It was indeed the first of it’s kind. And in most cases as in mine, the Panasonic is very robust and built like a tank. Love this radio on shortwave!

    • @johnstone7697
      @johnstone7697 Год назад

      While being a good performer, I take issue with the idea that the RF2200 is "built like a tank". It has a very fragile circuit board with thin traces. Even a small amount of battery leakage can eat through the lower traces and render the radio a useless brick. I've repaired a few of them for this problem. The Zenith is truly built like a tank. The chassis is handwired and made of steel. No printed circuits at all. All transistors plug in.

    Hello Bruce. As an experiment try placing your receiving coils flat on the ground. This would be similar to what hams & swl's are doing with their "Loop On Ground, (LOG) antenna. Possibly the log antenna may be useful for the am broadcast band.

    Good comparison! It is amazing and thrilling test! Ive long thought the RF2200 is the strongest as far as the sensitivity goes, but I need to update my thoughts now. That great and only a huge GE? who has exited from home electronics earlier in 80s ? The Superadio is super. But after all, I love the Transoceanic, tube is better. I have not mine though.

    All 3 are fantastic radios. What I noticed is that most great radios are geared for or stress one or two bands and the other bands are well, good but not exactly Mt. Rushmore. Sony’s best transistor radio included in the video and there you indeed DO have the Mt. Rushmore of transistor radios between swap meet price and NOS price. I myself enjoy an AMPLIFIED DX experience with the treble and bass set perfectly. So I have two Superadio IIs. One I’ll use regularly and the other one I’ll just check on from time to time because it’s NOS in the box. If someone has one for sale the best advice I would give is after demonstrations find out if it were made in Malaysia 🇲🇾. Those are the only ones you should consider.

    I need to measure +30dbm. Do you recommend any other model with this price range?

    • @rbrucecarter
      @rbrucecarter 3 года назад

      A lot of people are touting the Tiny spectrum analyzer which looks like it was done by the same people that do the tiny NVA. I saw a video on it, and unfortunately it seems to have a lot of issues. So I am pretty happy I got this one. I know it is a bit of a hassle to fiddle around with external attenuators, but I don't think even some of the older Agilent / HP and other models I have seen are pretty much limited to 0 dBm. I found a 20 dB from Crystec for $18.55 at Digikey: CATTEN-0200. A couple of those in series would put you at -10dBm. Their 10 dB model costs the same: CATTEN-0100 and a 20 dB and 10 dB screwed together would put you at 0 dBm and you will be safe with just about any spectrum analyzer. You just have to keep a mental note of the external attenuation when taking measurements. I got really luck - a company I used to work for had the best discards - when they fired or laid someone off, the big gray bins came out, all their stuff went in for recycling. We were free to dumpster dive if we wanted anything, and we could even take things home. I got a Pasternack attenuator with 1dB steps from 0 to 63 dB, so that is what I used. Its relays have gotten weak, it no longer works from TTL levels, but I drive with 6V and they work fine. Probably why they threw it away but I get plenty of work with it.
