We are a couple from Portland Oregon, sailing from the Pacific Northwest down the west coast, through the Panama canal, and currently exploring the Caribbean Sea.
Unless noted otherwise, all the music you hear was created onboard, either original compositions or original arrangements of classical music.
"Miette" is a 1990 Island Packet 32, a full keel, cutter-rigged sloop. The name "Miette" comes from the young heroine of a French 1995 film “City of Lost Children” directed by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and in French, means something like "little cake crumb".
Our goal is to explore the world with a light footprint and share the journey through these videos. If you would like to tip us, click the Patreon link, or Venmo (Eric.prado.pdx@gmail.com or @ERIC_PRADO) - we are most grateful for the wind you put in our sails!

Cruising life on pause - waiting out the hurricanes
Просмотров 802 месяца назад
We're waiting out the first half of the 2024 hurricane season in Turtle Cay Marina. We originally only planned to stay long enough to replace a defective Starlink receiver, but 3 months later, we're still here. Life's been quiet and peaceful here in our little hurricane hole. Occasionally, we enjoy the company of various European crews here. All are waiting out the hurricane season, and some wi...
Exploring Turtle Cay Marina, Nombre de Dios, Panama
Просмотров 1855 месяцев назад
We stopped in Turtle Cay, a tiny marina just west of Kuna Yala, so that we could get a replacement Starlink dish shipped to us. It is wonderfully isolated, being three miles away from the nearest paved road. There are just a handful of people here - the dockmaster, groundskeepers that live nearby, and a half-dozen people that work in a nearby restaurant and small hotel. Most of the boats here a...

"We are anchored in water only 10 ft deep among a chain of small islands protected by a reef 7 miles long. The area is named the East Holandés Cays, or more properly, the Maqui islands, as they’re known to the indigenous Guna people. The sea breaks against the reef near us, but behind it, only tiny wavelets lap softly against our hull..." ...continue reading (and subscribe to the free newslette...
Fort San Lorenzo and Rio Chagres
Просмотров 3196 месяцев назад
In this video, we depart Shelter Bay Marina for the Chagres River. This was our first sail in the Caribbean, and it was a rough one. The entrance to the river is tricky, with an underwater reef and sand bars, but we chose slack-tide for our crossing. Once in the river, the water was flat calm. We dropped anchor at the "Happy Howler" anchorage, and true to its name, we heard howler monkeys all d...
The Ruins of Fort Sherman
Просмотров 6216 месяцев назад
Fort Sherman was a US Army base built in the early 1900s to protect the northern entrance to the Panama Canal. Along with the canal, the United States turned over the fort to the Panamanian government in 1999, who predictably let it the majority of the buildings fall into ruin and be reclaimed by the jungle. We saw the same in Panama City, ableit in an urban environment - acre after acres of US...
Transiting the Panama Canal in a little sailboat

When we were abeam of buoy 25, the advisor finally picked up his radio. If it weren’t for the engine noise, you could have heard a pin drop. “Transit control, this is north-bound 15 Echo Charlie, reporting buoy 25.” A long pause during which none of us aboard uttered a peep. Finally the advisor’s radio came alive, “15 Echo Charlie, transit control.” “15 Echo Charlie here, go ahead.” We all star...
The Ruins of John Wayne City - Isla Taborcillo, Panamá

25 miles off the coast of Panama, Isla Taborcillo is also known as "John Wayne Island". John Wayne purchased the island in the 1960s. After his in 1979, his family sold the island. It was developed into a Western-themed resort. It's been sitting abandoned for years, gutted and decaying. We dropped anchor behind the island, and went ashore to explore the ruins our free newsletter/blog: lowcool.s...
Hiking to el Páramo de Sumapaz, Colombia

We picked up a man named Nivardo on the outskirts of Bogotá, squeezing into the car with us, and directing us up dirt roads out of down. Reaching a point in the road the car could no longer travel, we got out and walked up to a small farm where Nivardo lives. From there, he led us up, up, and up. We walked through high Andean forests that gradually gave way to the páramo, a biome of high-altitu...
Hauling out our sailboat in Panama
Просмотров 2517 месяцев назад
Back in 2022, we hauled out Miette in Mexico for new antifouling paint. I’d hired a couple locals to do the work. I was not satisfied with the quality of the work, but because we were sweltering in the August heat, we just wanted to get Miette back in the water and continue cruising. I figured the paint-job would last at least a couple years - and it did. Fast forward to 6 weeks ago, early 2024...

A day in the life of sailors anchored off Panama City, Panamá
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.9 месяцев назад
We motored 9 nautical miles from Isla Taboga to Panama City. The short passage is almost entirely through the hazardous cargo anchorage of sea-going ships, waiting their turn to transit the Panama Canal. We dropped our anchor in a small-craft anchorage known by sailboat cruisers as Las Brisas, off an island named Isla Perico (Parakeet island). The dinghy dock costs $1/day and is just a few minu...
Exploring Isla Taboga, part 2
Просмотров 2719 месяцев назад
We returned to Panama's Isla Taboga during the dry season. This time, the town of San Pedro has posted maps for trails we were not aware existed when we first visited. In this video, we hike up La Cruce, a cross overlooking the eastern side of the island, then around to Playa Jobo, on the north side. Our stay spanned a weekend, when the anchorage turns into a giant chaotic party during the day,...
Circumnavigating the Las Perlas archipelago in Panama
Просмотров 8969 месяцев назад
We are sailing again! It had been over 4 months since we’d sailed, having spent 2 months in the US and 2 months at a dock. Once the sails were full of wind, the bow slicing through the sea, we were back in the groove. Las Perlas get their name from the Spanish who discovered an abundance of pearls. They brought in slaves to harvest them. The descendants of the slaves are now the primary inhabit...

What time did you leave Monterey and what time did you arrive in Morro Bay?
We left Monterrey on 11/26/2021 at daybreak, and arrived at Morro Bay the next afternoon around 3pm.
lindo video, gracias por compartir, saludos desde Costa Rica
While in the US Army, I went through Jungle School at Fort Sherman in 1976. They told us then to stay out of Colon because it was 'crime-ridden, filthy, and poverty-stricken'. Sad. The Fort San Lorenzo is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.
Sounds like Colon has not improved
WOW !!!! did not look like that when I lived in the Canal Zone back in the 70s
Good video, cool aerials, but no sailing😢
Have you sailed the Columbia River? It has a very strong current. we sailed downstream, back to Portland (around the 11 minute mark in the video)
I've been looking for this island forever....I went about a 2 years ago on a school trip but I forgot its name, I got super uncanny vibes lol
if you're adventurous, you can kiteboard from Punta Chame. Don't go in March, the water was full of stinging jellyfish!
NOT 25 miles off the coast. Less than 2 miles off the coast. 25 miles from Panama City.
Yes! You’re right! Thanks for catching that
Where in Panama City did you see acre after acre of US built structures abandoned and in ruin?
Ft. Amador, perhaps, or Albrook AFS.
Amador
What a wonderful travelogue. So beautiful and so cinematic. I love seeing our part of the world through your eyes and lens. Safe travels, fair winds all the way. 😎
Si tu oye una ave asi? Huye
Fantastic video, follow You from Costa Rica.
Grácias! Te lo agradezco!! Thank you, I appreciate it!
And Happy Birthday, Captain!🎂🎂 Solar panels are up to 800watts+ now? Couldn’t quite tell from your overhead view…
I have eight 100W panels but I’ve never seen more than about 250W come from them. Two are very old and the flexible ones don’t seem to be too efficient. Don’t know I’ll tackle it this year but I’d like to replace all of them with hard panels
That hifi mike pickup gives your videos an “ Avatar” immersion effect… Where are you all planning to be during hurricane season?
We’re staying in Panamá for the hurricane season…I think. The risk here isn’t hurricanes but lightning. The other option is Rio Dulce Guatemala but we’re undecided.
Nice video, thanks! What time of year was this?
That was in July or August. The airfield is only open during the summer
@@SVMiette Thanks. Cool music too! I think we may take our Ercoupe up there next month.
Bring a bottle of red wine for Alan. He's the volunteer caretaker. He'll appreciate it and you'll appreciate all the work he puts in to keep this the best fly-in campground in the PNW. They have courtesy bikes and a courtesy car. The nearby restaurant was excellent.
Panama is chutdown, until the yankys get out, they go home !!
Hello, how exactly do you get here? I cannot find any marked trails online.
This area is accessible only by boat. There is a road on the other side of the bay, but it may be exclusively for rangers patrolling Parque Nacional Santa Rosa
I grew up in the Canal Zone. Thanks for the video..until someone gave my home away.
That sounds terrible. Land ownership in Panamá seems tricky
@SVMiette yes Oct 1st 1979 all the Zonians were crying.
looks really dull.
It's a place to leave your boat or work on your boat. There's not much more to do than that. We were there way too long!
I have recently moved to Panama and it amazes me that there are so many abandoned houses, factories, buildings, resorts, apartment blocks, etc. in Panama. It is as though no one does any research as to the viability or demand for these projects and so they fail.
Mexico is the same way. Things are built cheaply and poorly, and when they start to fall apart, they're just abandoned
People buy into a tropical dream. People get sold a tropical dream. Yes, it can be beneficial to buy these properties while they are dirt cheap because they're so remote, but it can take decades for society and development to catch up to these areas to allow a profitable business. In the meantime, people exhaust their funds and are forced to close up shop. It's a nice dream, and it sounds great when you're discussing it over drinks with a local realtor under the palm trees and beautiful ocean view. My father-in-law who has lived in Panama for 45 years likes to use the phrase "...they're selling the dream..." when he sees people viewing properties in Panama with a realty company. "It's easy to buy in Panama but hard to sell in Panama" is a fact that must be taken to heart when buying property in Panama or other countries. Think long and hard about all the factors, and know that it could take years to sell your dream property should you want or need to. Rent or go small ($) if you want a piece of the tropics. If it works out, great. If not, at least you will not have tanked your retirement funds on a dream that did not work out for whatever reason...
Baja CALIFORNIA, México.
You may not be surprised at the number of geographically-challenged Americans that think Baja California is in the state of California.
@@SVMiette Ok, and you can make a diference if you share that information on this video.
Now that is extremely strange. An abandoned Hollywood-themed resort on an island in Panamá. Great music, no commentary (the visuals were enough). Ty for bringing this to us.
DONT FEED THE ANIMALS. Seriously. They get habituated to humans and get killed when they become pests. It pains me to see you doing that.
We know better now!
Looks pretty Probably humid
Yes, villages on the sea tend to be humid, but while we were there, a nice breeze kept us comfortable.
@@SVMiette so i think baja wd be better weather, i will try la paz
Thank you for the tour! And welcome to the Caribbean!
The sounds of the jungle were beautiful. Love listening to the wildlife.
What an incredible place! Interesting history so thank you for sharing. I love your videos!!! ❤ Looking forward to your new adventures in the Caribbean! Safe travels.

This was beautiful. Thank you so much !
Absolutely magical! I loved Shawn's graffiti. The amount of coordination involved in that traverse is impressive. And it explains why passage costs are so...non-trivial. Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
Thank you Hawke! Super glad to virtually have you along for the ride!
Love the vid, music and content, you guys give me hope and peace.. fair winds. Your boat it the perfect size..
we're always the smallest boat in any anchorage, but we have the same views as everyone else! thank you for the comment!
Hahaha...No Kidding! Proves less is more@SVMiette
Really cool history, gonna read up more on it, it appears Brad "The Goat" Pitt is holding down things on the island these days.
the island is for sale! (can't find a price, though)
@@SVMiette Oh, with no price, it is free.

That's an incredible process and nerve racking! She looked nice and purty getting back into the water all shined up. Do you put a new prop on every year? That barnacle build up was wild.
It’s the same prop, just cleaned up! This type of prop runs a few thousand dollars, and as long as we routinely lubricate it every couple years, and protect it with sacrificial zincs, it should last a long time.

This archipelago is beautiful, but I heard that there is a lot of trash on the beaches. Is it true?
Yes, it’s true - there’s a lot of plastic trash on Panama’s beaches, and no effort is made to clean it up.
Beautiful boat
En 1990 estuve 8 meses alli, me encanta el lugar, conservo lindos recuerdos, nunca lo voy a olvidar, ahora vivo en el estado de Tamaulipas en un lugar muy parecido también hay mar rios y lagunas, saludos.
Thanks for giving us a street view of Panama City. Is the train a light rail system or a totally underground system, better known as a subway.
It’s both. The west side is underground but as it goes northeast, it’s on an elevated track far above the street.
What kind of sailboat? What kind of dingy? Thanks for posting and responding.
Miette is a 1990 Island Packet 32. The dinghy is a Bic Sportyak, which we either row or mount with a 2.5hp 4-stroke outboard
Thank you! I'm planning to visit here in March. Thank you for not adding music lol too many people add horrible music to videos. It was nice to hear nature 😊

I love your videos! Hearing the natural sounds of the ocean, waves, birds, etc is a great escape for us viewers. So many other sailing channels are filled with a lot of talking and music, which is fine as well but I really appreciate how you provide your wonderful content. Looking forward to more beautiful locations and safe travels to you both. Thx!
Best comment we've received lately! Thank you
Love it~~! Now I want to go there. Is there any public transportation to get there? From Sayulita to Chacala. thanks!
I don’t know. I did see charter busses, but no public busses.
Take the Pacífico bus to Las Varas and then a taxi or van to Chacala. At the Central Bus Terminal, request a ticket to Las Varas and follow the directions to board the bus.
