A tour of our Four Wheel Camper Grandby Model and modifications we made to suit the way we travel

We've owned our Four Wheel Camper for over three years, and made some modifications that improve the comfort, convenience and capability. Links: fourwheelcampers.com/ www.mainlineoverland.com/ www.overlandsolar.com/ lithionicsbattery.com/product/12v-320ah-e2107-gtx-battery-2/ www.hornbeckboats.com/ www.americantrucks.com/deegan-38-f-150-upper-replacement-grille-with-kc-30-inch-curved-led-light-...
We are preparing our new-to-us Grandby FWC for the remainder of our PanAmerican highway adventure. I love the magnetic backsplash you installed in yours. How did you attach the backsplash to the wall? Also, what kind of bar did you use for a towel rack? Thanks. Great rig!
We used some thin double sided tape to attach the backsplash. It's held up very well so far. We got the towel bar at our local hardware store. It's 9 inches, similar to this one: www.amazon.com/Amerock-Blackrock-Polished-Nickel-BH36005PN/dp/B0DLKBZBKM?th=1
@@rockydaleadventures …Thank you!
You guys should be new ambassadors for four-wheel camper your rig is fantastic.
Thanks!
Pickup makers should offer a cab chassis version with a rear door & flat rear bed. Then campers could have access from the cab of the pickup. Modify the pop-up so you don't have to go outside to raise the roof, avoiding snow, mud or rain. A lot of wasted space on a regular pickup bed. I'm considering putting a flat-bed on my PU with side tool-boxes for storage. Then set the Grandby on it.
That's a great idea. We considered doing that because you get a lot more storage!
Love your set up, are you interested in selling your rig?
Thanks, but we're not planning on selling our rig for a while... Hopefully we still have some good years left to travel, there are a lot of places we still want to see...
Hi. Thanks for the great video. Is the patent still pending on those steps? I am considering a Four Wheel Grandby and steps are a priority for me. 8/26/2024
The steps were custom made for us by our friend. They are not currently for sale, but maybe they will be sometime in the future. Hitch steps are available from etrailer, Amazon and even Home Depot. Another addition that we made, but didn't show in the video, is a larger rear handle. It's much longer than the stock one. We're planning to do an update video soon, so we'll be sure to show that...
@@rockydaleadventures Thanks for the reply. I’ll look into hitch steps.
Awesome build!! I have a hawk on a f-250 that I am building. I am adding solar and an inverter. Was it a pretty expensive job to add the 2000 watt inverter? I got quoted $1800 to add it in my camper and said that’s not a possibility…
I did the electrical work myself, so it wasn't too expensive. I paid around $600 for the inverter on eBay. This is the inverter that we have: www.amazon.com/Samlex-PST-2000-12-2000-watt-Inverter/dp/B003FWJ4OS
Beautifully shot and produced video... very professional. Love those Hornbeck boats!
Great build!! My wife and I are watching for a used Grandby with front dinette... weight is our driving criteria. Comments: (1) Thanks for sharing Hornbeck Canoes... amazing weight/performance features. (2) Your seat delete-drawer is perfect... who made it? (3) The ARB compressor is exactly what I'm looking for (4) Stainless steel backsplash and magnetic counter organizers... brilliant (5) Coathooks and mirror... my wife loves those! (6) Utensil drawer at dinette top... great idea!! QUESTION: Can you provide a photo/sketch of your roof plan with light solar panels and canoe racks... how do you prevent panel shading from racks?
The seat delete was fabricated by a friend of mine - he's very talented and skilled! We talked about what we wanted and he just made it happen. If you email me, I can send you some pictures of the roof. The canoes block the solar panels, but when we're driving the lithium batteries are charged by a Victron Orion TR Smart charger. When we get to camp, we take the canoes off, and the sun does it's thing. We also have a portable solar charger from Overland Solar: www.overlandsolar.com/products/bugout-130-rugged-solar-charger
man i hate ford, such an ugly truck to me, no offense.
My GMC Duramax 2 door 4wd Sierra & Grandby do great.
Wonderful job, best I’ve seen by far - wish Ford still made that truck. Looking around for one to do the same type build you have.
I think I got a woody,nice job.
Looks nice, wish it had an indoor shower
That’s beautiful, what is the inside dimensions wall-to-wall of your camper?
Wall to wall measures 78", front to back measures 140", the floor under the dinette measure 24" x 36". Hope that helps.
How do you get the canoes on top your camper ?
We have a telescoping ladder something like this: www.amazon.com/BOCOM-Telescoping-Lightweight-Multi-Purpose-Collapsible/dp/B0C56YKKGJ/ref=sr_1_4?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.nbG48O5i7uTsPIDvdS_8GA3oqSPxR97D_QOD-99P7aAn0rlPgsMOXSjgj6P8xXuY-EBQJfwUXniJNFy0aMsqVcfGc7KVXY2EE8Gv2byK_MP6bhMzn3CHyAx2FwEpVEjNtJPekox_uVJ_Ra5Udd8_mMs_2LP6qAK0EO19W9_tTgmsY2HoRsc3A-sgaxc9jtxDXDcdnbi23183KgPyo7n7Jt6Dt4PbHGT-QxXN9h51vqFRV6LuMJulUSypUZbVgp-5yaEAA_YyIxWIwDDyNxVwglVZ2ejRKED56D9zqo7jEak.vcruQEVgyOhN0DALSphdYD4SzgD1KjdrxYUxMziM0cw&dib_tag=se&keywords=WolfWise%2B8.5FT%2BAluminum%2BTelescoping%2BLadder&th=1
I wasnt aware that you could couldnt camp in certain places without a graywater tank. Would an external tank suffice? one that you can put back into the truck when you leave? The light boats are genius. I would like to see how you have them strapped down without damaging the aluminum roof. Thanks for sharing.
It seems each location has different rules... some places require a permanent black tank, other places prefer composting toilets, some places don't care. You just have to research before you go. As for the boats, we ordered the camper with factory installed Yakima tracks on the roof. Then we added our own racks.
@@rockydaleadventuresDo you have to have a ladder to strap the boats on? Also what length of boat did you get? I want to do a similar setup. My kayaks are too heavy to do that unfortunately.
Our boats are 10' and 12'. We have a telescoping ladder something like this: www.amazon.com/BOCOM-Telescoping-Lightweight-Multi-Purpose-Collapsible/dp/B0C56YKKGJ/ref=sr_1_4?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.nbG48O5i7uTsPIDvdS_8GA3oqSPxR97D_QOD-99P7aAn0rlPgsMOXSjgj6P8xXuY-EBQJfwUXniJNFy0aMsqVcfGc7KVXY2EE8Gv2byK_MP6bhMzn3CHyAx2FwEpVEjNtJPekox_uVJ_Ra5Udd8_mMs_2LP6qAK0EO19W9_tTgmsY2HoRsc3A-sgaxc9jtxDXDcdnbi23183KgPyo7n7Jt6Dt4PbHGT-QxXN9h51vqFRV6LuMJulUSypUZbVgp-5yaEAA_YyIxWIwDDyNxVwglVZ2ejRKED56D9zqo7jEak.vcruQEVgyOhN0DALSphdYD4SzgD1KjdrxYUxMziM0cw&dib_tag=se&keywords=WolfWise%2B8.5FT%2BAluminum%2BTelescoping%2BLadder&th=1
Great setup! We have a 2021 Hawk on a 2013 F-150 XLT, so that bumper might fit. Where can we find it? Googling didn't produce anything that pointed to the source. Thanks!
(Did go through your links.)
The bumper was custom made for us by our friend Dave - he's a very talented and skilled fabricator. He made the drawer system in the back seat, the gear boxes on the back, and other upgrades. If you have a fabricator near you, I'm sure you could get something similar made for you.
where did you get the red lithium battery
Links are in the description... lithionicsbattery.com/product/12v-320ah-e2107-gtx-battery-2/
What MPG do you get with the camper on. Thanks
On our last trip to Alaska and back, we averaged around 15.5 mpg. It depends a lot on the quality of the gas and how steep the mountains are... and how much gear and food we bring...
Great and thanks for the reply
Thanks for the tour! I finally had my ship come in and I got a 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road and I have on order the 4 Wheel Camper .. Swift Edition which I pick up Oct 17!
This is a great video. I'll definitely take some of your ideas and apply them to my camper!
Hi James. I met you guys up on the Keweenaw Peninsula on Lake Superior. Did you order that new drone yet??😊
Ha ha... I'm seriously thinking about it. Leaning toward the Mini 3 Pro. Thanks for the inspiration! It was nice to meet you. Have a great summer...
Wow just an amazing video and love to watch someone talk about something they love!!
Wow. Rad build. You guys are living!
What kind of canoes do you have?
The canoes are made by Hornbeck Boats. Link is in the description.
Have to say......WOW !! Have you really maximized you space & utility. That is one amazing evolution. Great to see you on the club too
very nice! what make canoe's are those btw?
The canoes are made by Hornbeck Boats. Link is in the description.
You did it! Just found your channel and subscribed immediately. This is the perfect rig, strong enough on a truck platform and complete as a camper. I’m impressed! Thank you.
Did I hear clearly this camper has AC unit?
very good your videos. I'm building a camper and the information is very important.
Johnson Sliver Minnow?
Usually I use a Lake Clear Wabbler. Sometimes, a Hinckley Spoon, or something similar...
I love this video and the lack of music
All these camper tours are pretty much the same. There's not much difference in these new one compared to my 1997 Sunlite. Except cost.
IMO the utensils drawer and the grey tank bumper are pure genius.
Great job , i enjoyed your video. I restored a 1988 Grandby, i love it, only used it once. No toilet or heater, so it can get cold by morning, but its only for occasional use.
Perhaps the best video I've seen. Could you tell me what size and make of inverter you installed? Thanks so much!
The inverter is a pure sine wave 2000 watt inverter - Samlex PST-2000-12. It has no trouble powering the induction cooktop. We have one installed in our house also, that's been running 24x7 for years with no issues.
You’re like the only person who mentions payload. Thanks
I love everything about this! You've obviously thought through every little detail which shows.
Excellent set up, thanks for sharing.
This outfit is about as close to a perfect camping outfit as one can get… Wow, love the thought and ingenuity that has gone into creating this dream machine. Thanks for creating and sharing the video!
Love your setup! The F150 with HDPP is my dream rig sir! What kind of mpgs empty and loaded? You really set it up right! Looking forward to learning more about your boats !
When we drove the truck off the lot, it was empty and we got 21 mpg on the highway coming home! Loaded, we got 16.8 mpg highway on our last trip to the Adirondacks, and we get around 14.5 mpg combined. It depends a lot on how much gear, food, water etc that we have with us. We're always trying to lighten our load...
@Rocky Dale Adventures thanks for the feedback! I wish I had bought a HDPP truck! Just got a used 2022 crew cab 6.5 bed Powerboost. Whimsy 1500 pound payload compared to the 2450 pound on a used HDPP truck I saw last summer. What is your payload like on the yellow sticker? And what kind of boats are those? Adirondack guide boats? They look light and stable!
@@slmjake The payload according to the sticker is 2,570 lbs. The boats are Hornbeck Classic Canoes. The link is in the description. They're great lightweight boats!
@@rockydaleadventures thanks sir! I need to check them out!!!! Those are so light!
Great video; very informative and love all the mods!
i like the camper just not the truck.
Great setup and video so thank you. My four wheel hawk will be arriving in January at Mainline Overland NC. I've been waiting to buy a truck because of the crazy market adjustment prices. I just wanted to know if that bumper setup is for sale with your friend at this time? I love those boxes and gray water tank.
Congrats on the new Hawk! I'm sure you'll have some great times. The bumper is completely custom, but I'm sure my friend could build one for you. It's a little involved - we relocated the backup camera, the spare tire hanger, and re-plumbed the kitchen sink drain hose. What truck do you have? If you email me, I can send you some pictures and dimensions. You might be better off finding a local fabricator to work with, because your truck will be in the shop for a while...
Fun 'playing fort' in a blizzard or thunderstorm. I've often wondered how safe I am from lightning sleeping up there.
Where in the world did you get that cool balance rod connecting your canoe to your backpack?!? That is brilliant! Also impressed to see an external frame pack, it has been a while. I have always preferred them, but they are almost non-existent these days it seems...
The carrier is my own design. We got the Kelty external packs from Hornbeck Boats. My friend Dave bent the aluminum U channel, and then I mounted it to the top of the frame with some cable clamps. The cross piece and tail piece are made from aluminum tubing. It's very easy to put the boats up and take them off.
@@rockydaleadventures Great design, now if only my Old Town wasn't 50lbs. LOL
Please can you give us the address or phone number of your manufacturer for that rear bumper and boxes. I really appreciate any help you can give me
My friend Dave made the bumper, swing outs, and boxes. It's all custom work, done right here in Pennsylvania - he's not exactly a manufacturer. Do you have a Ford F-150? I don't have CAD drawings but I could give you some rough dimensions, and you should be able to find a fabricator near you that could make what you want...
Great video, love the rig and boats. Safe travels 🍻
Enjoy your videos. We have a pop up camper as well. Love the fact we can go to more remote areas. Have you ever tried Packrafts? Much lighter and easier to carry long distances. We bought DIY kits. We have ultra light models (under 3 pounds) for our high Sierra trips and a slightly heavier model for pack rafting with our mountain bikes. Happy trails.
Years ago I had an inflatable raft similar to the Packrafts. It weighed about 4 lbs, and was kinda like a bathtub with a saggy floor!. Seriously considering a couple of Packrafts for our next trip out west. Our canoes are very light, and very comfortable - but still they weigh 14;bs and 18lbs each. We saw the Packrafts at Expo East and they've definitely come a long way.
I live close to where these campers are built and I’ve been considering buying one for years and your input with upgrades is very helpful
Very cool rig and it was wonderful meeting you both this past weekend at Hoss General Store. Thank you for your time and pleasant conversation. The videos were fun to watch too. Looking forward to more adventures. Safe travels .
Nice to me you too. Let us know if you get a FWC!
