A beautiful day today in West Kelowna

A beautiful sunrise and a beautiful day!!! I was in West Kelowna yesterday and caught a dragon fly on Ridge Estates Rd!

Well, first off it is a gravid female praying mantis that was likely trying to find a hiding place to lay her egg case. Praying mantises can bite, but that is extremely rare, almost non-existent, so long as you do not try to grab them or make your finger look like a meal. Handling them by hand is actually quite easy and poses exceedingly little risk if you just let them walk on your hand. So far as drinking water... most praying mantises obtain fluid from their prey or by drinking dew off of leaves in the morning. They don't drink out of containers or pools of water. The best option here is if you want to help the praying mantis is to leave it alone since it really was fine where it was without the water bowl. It is easy to get them to drink, if you just want to observe that action, by simply placing a drop of water on a twig and placing it near their mouths.
