A Look Back at the Old Banner — From People Who Were There
For our premiere episode, we broke from our usual one-on-one format to bring you an abbreviated - but nonetheless colorful and complicated - history of the Nashville Banner: a look at the days of a two-newspaper city, from people who lived it, day in and day out, in the storied newsroom at 1100 Broadway.

Hal Cato: CEO, Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee

From a young age, Hal Cato knew he wanted to help others - from a chance encounter with a senior in an assisted living center to recruiting friends to help him deliver Meals on Wheels. That drive has brought him into leadership at some of Nashville's most prominent nonprofits - including Hands On Nashville, Oasis Center and Thistle Farms. And it brought him very close to a run for mayor. "I'm s...

President-elect Donald Trump has promised mass deportations, raising questions about the feasibility of such an operation and, at the same time, causing fear in immigrant communities across the country. Here in Nashville, local authorities have stayed away from strident rhetoric, but this week Tennessee lawmakers introduced two bills aimed at undocumented immigrants (nashvillebanner.com/2024/11...

“I had a brain bleed. I was in a coma. I had a broken jaw, broken nose, crushed eye socket, crushed sinuses, collapsed lungs. They had to intubate me twice. I mean, his intent was to kill me.” The Dept of Justice's investigation of Trousdale Turner is now prompting some former staff to tell their stories, including a female guard so badly beaten by an inmate in 2020 that she's never been able t...
Environmental Group Urges Developer to Tackle Mount Juliet Orange Water Pollution
Просмотров 10814 дней назад
It's on the periphery of a busy Mount Juliet shopping center, a place few people explore. But here's a question. Even after 10 years or more, when pollution caused by construction is out of sight, should it ever be out of mind? You don't need to be a scientist to notice that something is going on at this site near The Paddocks shopping center in Mt. Juliet: The water is fuzzy and orange and it’...

At the city level, Mayor Freddie O'Connell's transit measure won big (nashvillebanner.com/2024/11/05/nashville-voters-approve-transportation-plan/) . What was different this time, as opposed to the failed 2018 plan? As expected, Republicans dominated statewide elections, but what comes next for Democrats, who eked out a m...

On a cold night in 1985, the Rev. Charles Strobel, then pastor at Holy Name Catholic Church in East Nashville, invited the people who were trying to sleep in the parking lot to come inside. This gesture, which he already knew might alter the course of his life, eventually grew into a citywide program known as Room In The Inn, now comprising 200 congregations, offering shelter and warm meals to ...

After all, his father is David Allan Coe, and Tyler spent more than a decade touring with him as a member of his band. He also has childhood memories of stars like George Jones, thanks to a connection with producer Billy Sherrill. But even that kind of proxi...
District 50 representative Bo Mitchell discusses toll roads, taxes and the value of experience

Because we at the Banner believe in more than just soundbite coverage, I sat down with Mitchell for a one-on-one interview. We think you can tell a lot about a candidate when you listen to them in their own words - much more so than in a 30-second ad or a flyer that’s been mailed to your home.

A few days before Christmas in 2008, a six-story tall, 84-acre mound of coal ash - a byproduct of burning coal - collapsed at the Kingston Fossil Plant in Roane County, Tenn. The toxic sludge burst through a retaining embankment, knocked houses of their foundations and tossed cars around like toys. All in all, a billion gallons of toxic sludge filled the Emory River and 300 acres of the surroun...

She’s a psychopath to this day. Her comment as she lays on her death bed, I'm too tired now" to be a threat to society. This woman Moore , should without question be behind bars.
I was transfered there when it first opened up and it was terrible. They were not ready and I almost died there. I finally got transferred out of there after about 3 months.
protective custody ? why do tax Payers have to pay 4 his protective custody?
😢 im so sorry to everyone who loved him so much. 🙏
quit doing drugs...quit being in prison
Whoa who peed on your cheese and grits?
It’s absolutely unacceptable that they let this shit happen in prisons. They’re more or less hostages when they’re in prison and don’t have much of a chance once they have crossed someone and can’t come up with whatever it is that they want. It’s a sad reflection on who we are as a society when our prisons are such horrible and dangerous places. I can’t imagine being in the jail that Sean combs is in right now. I really wouldn’t wish that place on my worst enemy. And Sean, aka, Diddy, kinda deserves what he gets but I also believe that being incarcerated should be punishment enough without being subjected to filth, bugs, rodents, inedible food, freezing or stifling hot environments. It’s simply inhumane. Other civilized countries don’t subject their prisoners to those conditions and they provide ways for their inmates to be rehabilitated. Come on guys, really? Can’t we do a LOT better than this? I’m sometimes ashamed at how far we miss the mark when it comes to taking care of our most vulnerable citizens. It makes me sad and angry that we have money for everything but those that really need it
FACTS N TRUTHS TO THE FULLEST... Hell u got my support n vote
Sounds Exactly like a Power hungry Greedy group. One day they will Have to answer for their lives and it won’t be good for them! 😢 🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸

First rule of prison- mind your business
The big problem with prisons in general I know and I know this first hand being a a corrections officer is we have a lot of dirty correction officers who bring a lot of contraband in and especially drugs for the inmates because he's inmates got money a lot of them have money on the outside and pay these correction officers very well but the bad part is these inmates eventually blackmail the correction officers and they will eventually get rated on I never ever was tempted to do that I've had many inmates approached me and it's not worth losing your job over
Prison is hell don't go to hell - Ask the divine creator for assistance - In turning your life around for good and leaving all negativity behind 🛐
Some of the comments are kinda nieve and dumb, first thing everyone has to remember is these are criminals and most are hardened to society law which does not work in prison. Prisons are run by the inmates, they feed, clean, and enforce their laws while the guards are the overseers to enforce the basic rules.
I’m sorry about your brother! I do believe you that he was killed after the extortion. Know of a private jail in another state my son was in for 3 1/2 months and basically same thing happened to a young kid. I say kid he had just turned 18 and his mother wouldn’t send the extortion money and now he’s dead. The guards just let it happen. The states’ are not monitoring these private prisons and until they step in, it will continue. Prayers for you and your family!
So what
He used drugs . If not he never would have needed cash to buy drugs . So many people are dying from fentanyl. My condolences to his family.
Don't do things to get you sent to prison
It's not that simple
The very momemt when the prisoners are saying they run the prison. They need to lock everything down. Amd start separation and solitary confinement for some
Man this is messed up, prisons need to be reformed.
My brother was in Brushy mountain he told me he could get all the drug's in there better than on the streets
I was at Trousdale a year ago. Trousdale isn't the best. Many issues exist. But i also knew that Josh guy. He was a junkie. He played games about money all the time. He had a gay dude he would call for money. I helped him with commissary sacks and sold him tobacco and meth. He eventually graduated to fen. He owed me $175 for over a year before he died. He never paid me. I could've attacked him for owing and not paying me but I didn't. Not saying be deserves to be dead but nobody extorts this junkies. Ppl tax late fees for late debt. Ppl want their money. If he overdosed, that's his dumb decision. He knew what he was putting into his body. He knew the possibility that he could overdose. Ppl stop pointing fingers bc your loved one is a junkie. Makes no sense.
Great comment. Thank you.

True!!! And lucky for you that you got out and wasn't reprimanded cause I Bn owed that much and not collecting up on what's urs and due to u is a sign of weakness inside and not saying you are but some inmates would say u ah bitch and not manning up handling it shit and that is enough to make ppl fall-in on you and beat n take whatever that would have wanted.... Behind Every action is a reaction ... Glad to know u got gone , I was there 2017-19... U ever know a white boy they called N-Hood with the Rollin 60s Crip? Jeffery Roberts???
He stuck his nose whrei it didn't belong
I bet he owed money or snitched
He owed money
I was in CoreCivic in San Diego. These people that work here are nuts. Power tripping left and right on us. The women especially. It’s a fucking DEI company with all crazy women running the facility I was in.
The jail staff must not realize they have job to protect people taken into custody!
🙏💕🙏
From what im hearing, this guy manipulated his family to send money, they sent money , he got his dope, then died. Done deal. Whether its a drug overdose or homicide. Drugs will get you killed. Close the book
He was being shaken for other reasons!
Extorting prisoners
Kroger has their own in house refrigeration team so it's all on them. That's why I shop at Giant eagle cases are always clean see them pulling and cleaning cases on a regular basis
Who's gonna tell her that she's feeling the guilt of contributing to his death for enabling his addiction while being incarcerated
“Enabling” doesn’t exist. Stop acting like people don’t have the right to provide support.
If you don't enough sense to not buy room temperature food...that's on your parents.
That’s one way to look at it similar to welding without eye protection I think you’re missing something!
ITS THOSE WATCHING THEM NOT DOING ANYTHING FOR THE SAFETY OF INMATES
Your brother got the same help George Floyd got since yall love to make memes about him
Handsome young man shame s.i.p son😢
Smh
Um, don’t start drugs and you won’t be a druggie. Druggies are druggies by choice. Don’t commit crimes and you won’t be arrested, tried, convicted and incarcerated. Yes, your brother DID die because he was a “junkie!” As is so often the case your brother was pulling your heartstrings to get money for drugs NOT to pay for the treatment program! You stated that the autopsy showed he had a huge amount of various drugs in his system. Now, with the high value of drugs inside of correction facilities, do you REALLY thing people held your brother down and force fed him the drugs?!?! NO. Your brother used the money he was getting sent to him from family members/friends who believed his sad sop (lies) stories- And, every one of those family members/friends who kept giving him money were enablers!!!!!!!!!
I live fairly close to this prison. There's always terrible stories coming out of that place. They are way understaffed. These privately run prisons need to be shut down! They're never held responsible by the state for anything. Various prisoners hacecwent in front 9f our state leaders after they got paroles and told of being raped...beaten...extorted...etc. nothing ever happens...why? I'd say because it doesn't involve their loved ones
Privately owned prisons r infact and actually better funded better staffed betted fed better medical than state run TDOC, and yes I known first hand cause I was sent to both but sadly what ppl ain't getting is one is no better than the other cuz same shit happens n state run as in privately run prisons
Ike50
Pretty sad.
Sooo we care why?
The government has to take back control of the prisons! This is happening way to much. They arrest way to many none violent offenders and put them in with harden criminals! Where these gangs extort and do what ever they want to other inmates! I believe prison should only be used for killers and child predators and violent criminals! But see the police and court system is just another way to control the population
It costs more to buy drugs in prison then on the outside, and if someone owes a drug debt inside a penitentiary, that inmate will be released on toe tag parole!
The Guards and Warden are in on it; they always are.
Private State prisons in the US are corrupt AF. Often times all the CO's are bought off. I have a lot of CO friends and the stories they tell about the corruption and mismanagement in the prison system makes you want to never get arrested. Unless you in federal prison a lot of shaddy sh!t be going on.
When you go to prison this is what you should expect. Dont make stupid choices and end up in prison.
That facility has too many names.
Hiding something
I do not know why we have for-profit prisons. I’m so sorry for this man and his family, and I hope they find justice. Thank you for making this story available.
Greed.
She's still quite the coo coo bird she was back in 1975.
