Yamaha Revstar Tuner Upgrade
In this video we are going to address the one upgrade I hear most people ask for with the new line of Yamaha Revstars. It is a great guitar, I wish it had locking tuners.
Well, I have made my choice for a set of locking tuners and today we are going to install them on my Revstar RSS20.
There are a lot of options out there. I contemplated getting a set of grover locking tuners. I have grovers on another guitar and I like them.
But for this guitar I wanted something a little different. I really like the look of the hipshot Locking tuners with the open gears.
So this is the set I decided to go with.
Maybe you have a Revstar, or any other guitar and want to change out the tuners.

So I have been daisy chaining for years now and just discovered this knowledges I rarely ever run multiple effects together and some pedals like boost and drive may be on always. I play to get another sufficient power supply like the Turetone CS12 to give all effects the power they need. All of my pedals function properly as of now. I am wondering how much damage I have already done by under powering them for so long playing a couple hours a week.
THANKS for helping me decide on getting one of these. And I love hearing “your love never fails” intro to finish up.
for big gig???
Huge fan of this product. At home I hook it up to the stock Marshal DSL 40c speaker with my pedals chained in front and it sounds better than the full Marshall amp. For gigs I plug it into any house speaker cabinet. This way I only need to carry my pedalboard on my shoulder and my guitar on my back on public transport, and the Marshall stays at home. Which leaves me a free drinking hand….
If you ever come across a Traynor QuarterHorse, definitely check one out. Same idea, more old scool sound. Headphone out (1/8") sounds excellent, but would need an adapter to go to the direct box.
Schaller Vintage Cooper
At this point - where things are techwise in 2024 I really think the way to go is analog preamp into class d amp into best quality guitar cab you buy. The last part is critical - you want a cab that doesn't color your sound but can accurately represent what you are trying to do in front of it which likely includes some kind of cab sim. Stay away from digital preamps - they may sound good but the tech still has a long way to go to make them respond correctly. Example setup would be something like... Sansamp based pedalboard with speaker emulation of somesort into class D amp (voiced flat for guitar use specifically) then speaker cab with modern guitar speakers that will not breakup/distort on rheir own. I know that sounds strange to alot of people but the tech is there now and you will wind up with a super versatile rig that is modular and highly upgradeable as the preamp/speaker emulation tech improves in the future. The right amp/cab investment should honestly last you a lifetime. Your amp/cab purchase should be all about headroom and not getting boxed into a specific tone. I find it hilarious that Fender is now pushing digital blackface amps as their big thing - to include the big price tag which is equal to the tube amp equivalents. Yes the preamps on these are actually probably the best digital ones I have heard for these specific amp models - BUT you are stuck in that tone space. Why not go modular and get something even better like a Sansamp Screaming Blonde analog Fender amp emulator pedal which does it better than Fender's own digital offerings and gives you multiple Fender amps with true analog response? It's much easier and less expensive in such a rig to not be boxed into a single tone space. It really blows my mind frankly what people buy in 2024 in light of the tech available. I love vintage gear... But the problem is it's VINTAGE with all the headroom, reliability, high maintenance, transportation complexity, ect involved. Once I stopped thinking everything had to be digital or tube and looked at the other non-tube analog alternatives my world vastly changed and I will never look back now. So much is driven by selling you stuff you really don't need. Beware of just using what your favorite artist(s) use because in so many cases the reason why they use the stuff is they are being paid to do so - not because it's the best option for what they are trying to do. In fact what you see them using live is often very different than what they recorded with. It even gets so bad at times that the wall of amps you see on stage is loaded with different than stock speakers running through a different amp setup backstage.
My first ever pedal was the infamous Bad Monkey years ago… used the wrong plug and it started smoking and fried out.. I could’ve been a millionaire
I have a 2016 RS502T love it .
I have one of these, and recently got a second one, so I can use it as a two channel amp. One set clean, one set dirty, as it really does have a sweet sounding gain to it. I realize I'll have to run them line out into an ABY box, but I'm looking forward to trying that.
How do you switch between amps and where you connect a cabinet?
@@oleksiykachynskyy4828 Haven't figured that out yet. I may need a second ab/y box.
No link to the tuners? I can't find them in this color
thank you
Quit your church band and join one where you can use your amp. Jesus wants to hear your amp.
Bet He wants to hear your jokes too 😂
Were you happy with how the Chrome matched the existing hardware? Or do you think Nickel would have been a better match?
I went with D'Addario Auto-Trim Locking Tuners, love them!
Nice job . I like that you put the Yamaha buttons on . Looks great
Screw the sound guy!
Not a fan of the Hipshot plates, but I liked the look of the Hipshot buttons... I put Grover 502N on it (RSS20). Even though the Revstar hardware is supposedly chrome, it's color is closer to nickel. I had chrome nickel tuners on before and the chrome color just looked off...
I put Locking tuners on both of my Revstars RSS20 and RSP02. I used Grover 502C (kind with the wheel on back), and they are a direct drop-in. And yes, used original buttons as well.
Did you find that the 502C Chrome matched the color of the existing hardware? A few people have suggested that the Nickel color is maybe a better match?
@@ColinLee47 Remember I took the Knobs from the stock tubers and replaced what was on the Grovers. THat's why I went with the Chrome. SIt's the Grover Kidney knobs that would stand out as unmatched. As is you don't notice it. Nickel tends to corrode
Are the peg holes 8.5 or 10mm? Thanks, great video!
Hi, doing the same thing to my Revstar. What exact specs did you choose on the Hipshot? Length and hole diameter? Thanks.
I had this and returned it. It did not sound good to me. I have the victory v4 duchess and use the line out. It has an excellent fender tone, takes pedals well, and the on board reverb and tremolo are top notch. Run my pedals into it and it into the two notes cab m
Hi, please tell us the exect model of the tuners. Or just give us a link. THANKS!
I don’t see the reason why he hasn’t answer this simple question asked several times in this video.
@@JC-xc8rx - ikr? I can't find them. what's the point of making a vid, putting a million words in the description and not including a product link
Just make sure that you have about 3 windings around the post and it will stays in tune without the lock. To do that, I pull the string through the post and I give it about the width of my hand of spacing, sitting on the fret board under the string. Give more slack to the larger diameter strings, and less to the small strings.
Staying in tune is not the only reason to use locking tuners. Speed of String replacement, like a broken string on stage, is another big reason.
I need to ask why you miced your cab for the outside gig. Why didn't you run out of the cab sim out? Not critisizing, I'm asking.
Doing this to my revstar p90!! I’ve got a set of Vintage hip shot lockers that should work fine.
I want to use this setup. Do you use in ear monitors? Can you run a line from the headphone/cab out to a Behringer P2 and then use the speaker out Jack to go into a direct box for the front of house mix?
The best option to put on my RevStar 2022 pro, I need to get more stability with the new bigsby b5
would be great if you would have mentioned which Hipshot tuners you used. I assume there are more than one...
Could you add some photos of the result? Could you share the link of the new tuners? Thanks.
I can help it but i think that Yamaha guitars sounds bad. Like a small twostroke engine or something.
Excellent choice of Hipshot open gears
IMO, they are the best electric guitars under $1000 right now. I was in my local guitar store last week and was going to buy a Gibson Custom Shop SG that I was looking at. I noticed that they had a new Yamaha Revstar made in Japan one that just came in. After playing the Yamaha, I bought it. The Gibson was $5500 and the Yamaha was $2000. The quality of the Yamaha is much better than the Gibson.
Dude. Get a guitar with Seymour Duncan hum cancelling P90's. Get ANY P90 guitar..you need it in your life. It will change your life. :) Best Regards and Best Wishes for 2023!
Thanks for showing this. I am considering getting one of the Revstars but even the Japan-made prof does not include locking tuners so I have though about upgrading if I get one. I have a Fender Tele Ultra and those locking tuners are great. Thanks for the videos.
Would this necessitate a string change or can I reuse rhe current ones?
I commented on another video of yours, and there's something about the Revstar that bugs me. It's not the playability, that's outstanding. It's not the sound. It's not the body shape. It's of all things... the slider switch. Yes, I know that's a weird nitpick to have, but I just don't like the slider switch for some reason. It feels tacky and cheap. I'm thinking of taking it to a tech/luthier and seeing if he can install a 3 way toggle for me. I don't care if he has to do some drilling, the slider is the thing that's preventing me from playing it more. Oh, and there's a certain someone who sucks up all my time, but that's another story...
I have one. It’s running with a peavey 1/12 cab. And luckily I got boss dual overdrive which allow me to use clean (orange)>crunch>lead. 3 channel !!!😊
That's interesting and I have considered this as a compact pedal amp with an effects loop. What's it like for low volume playing at home (mostly) - does it still sound good or is it hard to tame? Orange recommend it being used with their PPC108 can, which I guess would help tame the volume. Then I could keep a second 12 inch cab when more volume is needed?
What about the nut. They say they are cheap and I wonder what could be put for replacement.
Fortunately, there is a possibility to restore the "old" buttons. Otherwise, it would be a shame and a degradation of style. From an appearance point of view, only the P90's are missing. With them, everything would look absolutely perfect. And from my point of view, also sonically. The P90's have such warmth and some kind of nobility in their sound. Thank you for your presentation.
Thank you for your comment. :)
Thank you ! I am also thinking about upgrade the tuning pegs on my Revstar😃
Hope the video was helpful. Thank you for your comment. :)
Are the tuner holes 10mm or 8.5mm?
Tuner upgrade is probably the best thing you can do to update a guitar.
I agree! Thanks for the comment.
The Gotoh 301 drop straight in, no drilling needed. What I put on mine.
They are very similar to what Prs SE offers in terms of specs.....all hardware and electronics made in Korea, woods from the area of SE Asia and simple good build with some decent QC. It's a decent quality product but it's a bit overpriced. You can get a Prs standard SE for less than a Revstar Standard.
I have a whale blue PRS SE 245 (not standard) that I love. I would say they are similar in quality. I got the 245 and the Revstar for a similar price. Thanks for commenting.
Why do you think it is overpriced ?
@@martijn_yt its price its too high for what it offers. It has that Mid boost thing which is cool, but other than that it does nothing special others dont do for cheaper (Cort, HBenton, Ibanez, Sire, Vintage...)...Now if you dont mind paying more or buy second hand its a good guitar no doubt about it.
Did the same upgrade with the same tuners. Love these !! Great upgrade
Please wath model of ipsot tuners are that? I want to do the same in my revstar 🙂
I bought a Revstar Element recently (and if someone actually affords me the time to PLAY the darn thing, I'd tell you how I like it... but that's another story). Anyway, the tuners are the one thing that I'm considering upgrading. So this video comes along just in the nick of time. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. Thanks for commenting.
Gotoh 301 drop straight in, what I put on.
Q bella guitarra felicidades, ojalá pueda conseguirla aquí en Colombia
Bought one for my daughter's first guitar and was so impressed that I sold a Gibson dc special to pay for another for myself. The feeling of quality in every aspect of this instrument far outshines any Gibson I've ever played.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. :)
What a great new channel! Thanks for the great review. I’m looking at a Revstar Element as my first quality guitar after spending my first year with a cheap beginner’s box guitar. I’ve subscribed. 👍
Awesome! Thanks for sharing. :)
I’ll subscribe just because you’re showing love to the revstar!
