It's unfair to compare Singapore with the US. Singapore as a nation is not even 60 years old, yet it now has a very well-informed population that by and large supports its government's policies. And in the short time of 50 years plus, Singapore has also come a long way in terms of diversifying its education system through its own trial and error, tried and true methodologies. At present, its burgeoning fine arts programmes are some of the very best...Students from all over the world are here because they see the merits of studying here. So give the education system another ten years to further develop in its own way. The future is even more promising.

In Chinese culture, people are brought up to see life in terms of roles and obligations. A student who does well in school also goes on to support her parents in old age. Simply put, Chinese people think in terms of multiple generations, not just one. They learn from a young age to carry on their civilizational values and wisdom. So, contrary to popular Western opinion, Chinese students are not all about grades. Instead, many work hard and care about their performance in school because they care about providing for their family. The family is the building block of society in Chinese minds, not the individual, and perhaps this explains why Chinese societies have been so dynamic and resilient because the Chinese individual is never alone. He can always rely on his family and his community.

Hi Paige Parker. I’m sure everyone including you and your husband knows what happened to China now. Hahaha. All that effort you and him ploughed in, all his money invested in a waste land, moving to a humid near-dictatorship, forcing your child to learn a language you hyped up and now ultimately useless. How does that feel? 😂😢😅🤣🤣

Our birth rate per year is only 30k + .. hello guys what Nobel prize can we get. I think the biggest problem of Chinese anywhere in the world is they put too much money efforts in developing a child rather than having three ordinary children. Singapore have hdb bto, p1 to jc2 school fee is less than $10 a month. By 2050 Singapore will have 48% of degree holders. Have more children, save Singapore

The average PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment.) scores (maths and reading) for Singapore are equivalent to a GCSE A* grade (highest grade possible) in England. GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) is equivalent to a genral high school diploma in America ( no AP).

Interesting, and very thought provoking. IMO (no particular order of importance), - Life is non-static, dynamic, and people are complex and complicated; There are almost never a “one-size-fits-all” solution; And if any, never permanent; - Be whatever we passionately want to be but be constructive and be circumspect; - Be a thinking person including questioning our thinking; - Question everything, question everyone, question yourself even more; - Champion / advocate whatever your belief is good and/or necessary but if possible, do not vilify things that are contrary; - Let our voice be heard, but let our actions speak louder; - We can’t change everyone; Maybe if we change first, others might change too; - Maybe being “perfect”, being “successful”, etc…are unrealistic or irrelevant social constructs. Just aim to be a decent human being; Unfortunately, for as long as we choose to live in a community, we will have to learn to live with the perils and pitfalls of being in harmony and being contrarian. One who seeks only to be always harmoniously in one with the populace plunges into the void of being popular, and one who seeks to be always contrarian perishes into the abyss of vain self-infatuation and/or self righteousness.

Whilst I don't disagree with what Jamus is saying in terms of substance, the big challenge is really not about changing the ways of educating people in Singapore but something much harder to shift in Singapore -- i.e. the grades-driven mindsets. Specifically, the culture in Singapore is all about grades. You can change the emphasis on Grading and put more weight on different things. Ultimately it is about grades, not the learning process itself. After all, Paige (along with Jim) decided to move to Singapore for that and they came with the same mindset. Whilst people who reject such systems leave Singapore. So what you are going to have is a situation where those who are left in Singapore will be those that are invested in the status quo -- leaving those who can't move out of Singapore, the minority asking for change and since they are the minority they can't get others to agree to change. This situation basically ensures that the status quo -- grade oriented -- persists. It is easy to say grades doesn't matter when your child has already gotten the top grades. It's like a rich guy (say Jim) telling a poor guy money doesn't matter.
