Rocking Sam & Four Piece Band: Good Rocking Sam Boogy
G R S = Good Rocking Sam, born Herbert Sam c.1924 & active in the Houston zydeco scene for many years. Hear the other side of this hot 45 elsewhere on this channel. As mentioned there, I am curious if that may be Harold "Frenchy" Joseph on drums & if there are other releases on what I assume is Mr. Sam's private label? The condition of this 7" makes it clear that it has seen a lot of play over the years, but who can blame those of us who have been lucky enough to have it for a while. Holy smokes, what a record. Artee L. Philyaw: Long Journey to the Promised Land
Просмотров 509Месяц назад
A transfixing & beautiful song by Artee L. Philyaw (?-2008). From his obituary: “He was known as ‘Mr. Gospel Explosion’ on KIOU radio for many years. His singing career began at 5 years old & later became the leader of a Gospel group called the Echoes of Zion. He made several recordings & later CDs. Mr. Philyaw was known as an entrepreneur & had one of the first Black successful businesses call...
The Sand Mountain Playboys: Wild Bill
Просмотров 532Месяц назад
Hot, somewhat Middle Eastern tinged bluegrass recorded c.1961. It took 6 composers to wrangle together Wild Bill, including Marvin Downer, who went on to lead the Bluegrass Four. I would be interested to learn about other recordings in this vein from that time period, if anyone has any tips.
The Voices of Harmony: A Little Misusing
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Месяц назад
Another beauty by the Voices of Harmony, an especially fine group from the Baton Rouge area who first came to my attention since they often played on programs with Rev. Charlie Jackson. They recorded at least two outstanding 45s for the Herald Records / Herald Recording Studio custom label (& are not to be confused with Voices of Harmony groups from elsewhere, despite what is currently shown on...
Rubye Shelton & Sister Orr: The Hypocrite
Просмотров 515Месяц назад
Rubye Shelton (vocal) & Sister Orr (drums) seem to have been from Detroit or thereabouts & their music has echoes of the street corner / storefront gospel tradition. The Hypocrite is an impassioned song that calls out gossipers with flow & earthy humor. "'Have you heard about Sister Sally?' Tell that hypocrite to put his garbage in the alley!" Some years ago this song was posted on RUclips with...
Monroe "Guy" Jackson: Lonesome Home Blues
Просмотров 517Месяц назад
Monroe "Guy" Jackson (c.1904-1989) was a blues musician from north Mississippi who seems to have played mostly in & around that vicinity, though he apparently made a trip to NYC to play at Lincoln Center in 1985. In a preview for the NY Times, Robert Palmer wrote that Jackson was 77 years old at the time & “grew up in the northern Mississippi hill country, which nurtured a blues culture much di...
Bro. Thomas Congo Christians: No Weeping and None Like Thee
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.2 месяца назад
Unfortunately I know very little about Bro. Thomas Congo Christians. Another v/a 7" EP on Air has a song credited to Sister Lee Congo Christians, "Dark in Sin," which is also a stunner: beautiful lilting acoustic guitar & exquisite (multi-generational?) singing. Hear it elsewhere on youtube. I would certainly be grateful if anyone could provide more information about &/or songs by these deeply ...
Willard Artis "Blind Pete" Burrell: I'll Fly Away
Просмотров 2502 месяца назад
Willard Artis “Blind Pete” Burrell (1936-2015) has a slim but spellbinding discography: 4 beautiful spirituals recorded at his home in Bogalusa, Louisiana, c.1969 by David Evans. 3 of these songs are on the all-time great Sorrow Come Pass Me Around comp (reissued on Dust-to-Digital). The other tune, a stunning version of I’ll Fly Away heard here, is on the Roosevelt Holts & Friends LP on Arhool...

(Good) Rocking Sam & Four Piece Band: You're Loving Another Man
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.2 месяца назад
G R S = Good Rocking Sam, born Herbert Sam c.1924. Active in the Houston zydeco scene for many years, his group also cut an unbelievably hot live recording, "They Call Me Good Rockin'," heard on Zydeco Vol. 1: The Early Years (Arhoolie). It features Harold "Frenchy" Joseph on drums, "a wild character with an extraordinary powerhouse style." (McCormick/Oliver, The Blues Come to Texas) I wonder i...
Ike Gordon with Caravan No. 2 of Zachary: So Soon I'll Be at Home
Просмотров 5562 месяца назад
Rousing gospel from Bro. Ike Gordon & Caravan No. 2 of Zachary, both of whom were frequent collaborators with Rev. Charlie Jackson. This is the flipside to the Margie L. Drake song posted here earlier. Once again, the guitar is by Melvin Beverly, and the Caravan No. 2 may include Mary Bennett & Lottie Mae Burton. My efforts to learn more about Bro. Gordon unfortunately haven't turned up much. H...
Dudley Alexander & Washboard Band: Baby Please Don't Go
Просмотров 3423 месяца назад
Dudley Alexander & his washboard band offer a hot, French/English early zydeco version of Baby Please Don't Go (music starts ~0:43), recorded in Houston c.1959 by Mack McCormick. Personnel is Dudley Alexander (voice & concertina), Alex Robert Jr. (fiddle), & Vincent Frank aka Blues Boy Vincent (washboard & pictured at left here). Incredible recording, from the Treasury of Field Recordings Vol. ...
Margie L. Drake (aka Sis. Margie Poole) with Caravan No. 2: Let it Be (Capital City Gospel Records)
Просмотров 4523 месяца назад
This outstanding & scarce side may be the only commercial recording by Margie L. Drake, who was also known as Sis. Margie Poole. She often sang with renowned gospel guitarist & singer Rev. Charlie Jackson in his group, the Jackson Singers. Here she is backed by Melvin Beverly on guitar & vocals by the Caravan No. 2 of Zachary (who also collaborated with Rev. Jackson; hear their Trouble in My Wa...
Cleo Page with Ernest Johns: A Long, Long Time
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 месяца назад
Mesmerizing early side by Cleo Page & his very stripped-down "orchestra," with Ernest Johns on vocals, c.1955. Spare & spellbinding blues, up there with RL Burnside’s Going Down South in my book.
Russell Lee and the Southern Wonders: Fire and the Holy Ghost (Herald Recording Studio)
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
One of the all-time great rousing gospel numbers, in my book. I can imagine how well this must have gone over at church services, with the group raising the intensity & then drawing it back (“Wait a minute! Wait one minute!”) before picking it up again. Apparently from Denham Springs, Louisiana or that general vicinity, it seems they (or an offshoot group) also cut at least one 45 for Golden Re...

He was born Nov. 17, 1936, and died Sept. 16, 2015, both in Bogalusa. He went blind as a teenager. That does appear to be him in the photo. He was remembered by the renowned poet Yusef Komunyakaa, who took inspiration from his peformances.

What a revelation this film clip is. The Reverend has an extraordinary stage presence and I love the sound he gets out of his guitar. More passionate Rock N' Roll in 3:43 minutes than in Led Zeppelin's entire back catalogue. Tip of the hat to the school for having a "Restoring Lost History" class and having the good taste to invite the Reverend. By the sound of it , the student's seem to be really getting to the Reverend's music
