Being an Aerospace Engineer is a lot harder than a teacher. As a teacher, you're just teaching the same subject for the rest of your life. You're pretty good at it because that's all you practice. You sometimes have to add different things to the core areas of your teaching, but it's not like it's hard. You just show up to work and build on knowledge of other kids. You should try to make them love the life of academia.

@@dannyrios2004 what you are lacking is a definition of a lot harder. I completely agree that Aerospace Enginnering is way more complex when it comes to innovation and developing your self as a Physicist. But being a teacher is a whole other world. You must be able to inspire and intrigue the children. I don't know what your teacher has been like but if you love physics even the tiniest bit, you must appreciate that someone has ignited a spark in you. And that someone must have had a talent for doing that, which is far away from being easy.

If there's a widening gap between supply and demand of teachers (especially STEM), why are programs like these so selective? Shouldn't you be making it easier for individuals to get into teaching?

This is a great question. We know that the teacher shortage has not been solved - and in fact has been perpetuated in part - by churn (teachers who enter the profession and quickly leave). So, it's not a feasible solution to continue to simply and only increase the number of people entering the profession. This has not solved the shortage and will continue to not solve it. Instead, our approach is to invest in the training and preparation of STEM industry professionals so they not only enter the profession, but they stay. Quality teachers who stay are the real solution; our Fellowship's selectivity helps us ensure we have the right people for this very difficult work. Yes, churn is high, and experiencing teaching in a classroom is truly the only indicator to know if the profession is right for you. If the idea is to attract high quality teachers, I think the answer is actually to lessen the time and cost to obtain a teaching credential (for highly qualified individuals). Someone like myself, who has multiple degrees unrelated to education and is making a feasible income, would have to give up much income and opportunity cost just to test if the profession is right for us. I am certain I would be a high quality teacher, but the barrier to entry is just too high

Something seems wrong when the group you are comparing to only scores 45%. (6:37). I think this has lead too many people to apply the same thinking from one group on to another. For example - no one is developing math solutions for the Xbox or Playstation. Nobody is looking for distribution networks outside the internet.
