March of the Princesses - Jules Massenet, Transcribed by Fred Junkin
March of the Princesses, from Jules Massenet’s opera “Cinderella” was premiered in May of 1899. The opera tells the familiar story of Cinderella, and this piece was written for a ballet scene in Act II, as the procession of the princesses enters the Royal Hall to be presented to young Prince Charming. During the scene, a heavenly unknown beauty (Cinderella) enters and the prince and Cinderella fall in love at first sight. Suddenly the clock strikes midnight and Cinderella runs off, as the stunned prince looks on, loosing one of her glass slippers in the process.
The opera’s first performance was an instant success and this arrangement by Fred Junkin maintains the lightness of the orchestra...

Vanity Fair - Percy Fletcher, edited by Brant Karrick
Просмотров 632 месяца назад
Vanity Fair is a concise and refreshing overture that is a wonderful example of Fletcher’s light melodic style and first-rate scoring. Described by the composer as “a comedy overture in which several characters from Thackeray’s novel are portrayed,” the fast-slow-fast, single-movement form includes three main thematic ideas. The opening vivace section features a vigorously energetic melody that...

American Salute - Morton Gould, transcribed by Philip J. Lang

Originally written for orchestra, American Salute has become a favorite of the concert band repertoire. Using the familiar tune When Johnny Comes Marching Home as the sole melodic resource, Morton Gould demonstrates his skill in thematic development, creating a brilliant fantasy on a single tune. Written in 1942 in the early days of World War II, it was composed at the request of a government r...

The Invincible Eagle - John Philip Sousa

The Invincible Eagle, was composed in 1901 during a train ride between Buffalo and New York. The march was dedicated to the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo in the summer of 1901. At first Sousa thought “The Invincible Eagle” would surpass “The Stars and Stripes Forever” as a patriotic march, although he nearly entitled it “Spirit of Niagara.” The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band is under t...

There actually are pros and cons in everything... My honest and straight-forward impression is that I like Orange Devils' play far better than this OCSB. I heard some out-of-tune sounds (noise, actually) in OCSB's play and overall sound does not let me imagine the song is about "His Honor." The play by Orange Devils on the other hand does give me strong impression enough to imagine it is about "His Honor" with definite strength, vivid accent and power in their play.

This song was covered by a Japanese band of high school students called OrangeDevil. I came to hear how other bands performed, but as expected, professional bands are amazing. Sorry for comparing them to high school students. 日本のOrangeDevilという高校生のバンドがこの曲を取り上げました。 他のバンドがどういう演奏をしてるのか聴きに来たのですが、 やはり、プロのバンドは素晴らしいですね。 高校生と比較してごめんなさい。

@@OklahomaCitySymphonicBand It is indeed a fine solo part. Another piece of Dr Reed's. the Armeinan Dances also has lovely English horn work in both the !st part and the second part. The second is less well known but has the best Eh part. If you've never played either you're in for a real treat. Hope you have or get the chance. He did write nicely for our Instrument.. Also nice to meet another Eh player. Not many of us. For many years I was both oboe and Eh as needed but had to give up the oboe in 2009 to an arthritic hand problem. So glad it did not affect my Eh playing. I'm mostly retired now but still do play Eh parts when asked. It was my main instrument in college.

I grew up in Fremont! I now live in Topeka, KS. My maid of honor, Kathryn, plays both oboe & English horn. She’s from San Antonio, & we met @ Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD; she ended up @ Augie because her godfather was Lawrence Welk’s accordianist, Myron Floren, & he was an Augustana alumnus. During the time we were at Augustana (1997-2001 for me, she started two years later), the first & last pieces of this medley, Children's Prayer & Cathedral Chorus, were the centerpiece of the Christmas Vespers service, which included all 3 of Augie’s choral groups; Kathryn & I both sang in the Women's Choir. While the Brass Choir played the piece, the members of all 3 choirs would form a cross down the main aisle of the church & in front of the communion railing; we stood with our heads bowed until the massive timpani roll (@ 12:13 in this video), at which point we all raised our heads at the same moment. I came looking for a video of this piece after I heard it on Kansas Public Radio on Classical Music in the afternoon.
