Pride of the Clipper - Brian Balmages
St. Michaels was established in the early 1800s and achieved great success in the shipbuilding industry, especially during the war of 1812. One of the iconic ships produced there was a schooner that came to be known as the Baltimore Clipper. These ships were renowned for their speed and ability to outrun pirates, evade enemy blockades, and more. The clipper remains an iconic name in the Baltimore area and the surrounding area.
Pride of the Clipper takes the listener back to the early days of St. Michaels, combining the joy of living on the water with the industrial sounds of a shipyard. The sound of ship bells interact with the rhythmic banging on metal to immerse the audience in the sound...

Breaking Point - Brian Balmages

Breaking Point [was w]ritten over a several month period when the composer’s father was dying, [and] the composer states: “Throughout this entire experience, I have reached my own breaking point. Over and over again. So I fall apart, put myself together, and am then broken all over again.” One of the most emotional and powerful pieces Balmages has ever written, there are moments of untamed beau...

Marche des Parachutistes Belges by Pierre Leemans, arr. Charles A. Wiley While he was serving his year of military duty at the end of World War I, Pierre Leemans’s regimental commander asked him to compose a march; it was begun but never finished. Near the end of World War II, he was having dinner with a group of paratroopers and was again asked to compose a march. As the group commander, Maj. ...

Let Me Be Frank With You - John Mackey
Просмотров 759Год назад
“In the summer of 2020, in the midst of COVID, I desperately felt like I needed to write something joyful. So I started writing, and after about 24 measures, I had this terrible feeling - not uncommon for composers - that maybe the piece I was writing had already been written. And in this case, I feared that I had just plagiarized Frank Ticheli. I sent the opening to Frank, who was incredibly g...
Semper Fidelis - John Philip Sousa, edited by John R. Bourgeois

This beloved Sousa march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: “Semper Fidelis” - “Always Faithful.” The first performance was in the Inaugural Parade for President Benjamin Harrison when Sousa was the Conductor of the U.S. Marine Band - “the President’s Own” and has subsequently gained recognition as the official march of the U.S. Marine Corps. Blaze Away! - Abe Holzmann, arr. Erik W.G. Leidzen

The inspiration for this march came from a well-published incident during the Spanish-American War. During a naval conflict in Manila Bay in 1898, Admiral George Dewey was standing on the bridge of the flagship Olympia with Captain Charles Gridley, who was awaiting firing orders from his superior officer. When Dewey gave the command, “You may fire when you are ready,” Gridley replayed the order...
King Cotton - John Philip Sousa
Просмотров 874Год назад
It is a curious fact of the music world that marches written for fairs and expositions almost always fade into oblivion. Two notable exceptions are Sousa’s “King Cotton March” and “The Fairest of the Fair.” The former was written for the Cotton States and International Exposition of 1895, and the latter for the Boston Food Fair of 1908. Sousa and his band had great drawing power at fairs and ex...

Adapted from the program note in the score by John Zdechlik The Oklahoma City Symphonic Band is under the di...
Three Celtic Dances - Brian Balmages

Based on three different Scottish dance forms, “Three Celtic Dances” explores a wide variety of Celtic styles using both authentic dance tunes and original material. The first movement, Reel, is in cut time as is typical of all reels. It is based on the tune The Last Pint of Ale, a lively, spirited tune. In this case, the melody itself never changes - the movement is constantly developed with s...

There actually are pros and cons in everything... My honest and straight-forward impression is that I like Orange Devils' play far better than this OCSB. I heard some out-of-tune sounds (noise, actually) in OCSB's play and overall sound does not let me imagine the song is about "His Honor." The play by Orange Devils on the other hand does give me strong impression enough to imagine it is about "His Honor" with definite strength, vivid accent and power in their play.

This song was covered by a Japanese band of high school students called OrangeDevil. I came to hear how other bands performed, but as expected, professional bands are amazing. Sorry for comparing them to high school students. 日本のOrangeDevilという高校生のバンドがこの曲を取り上げました。 他のバンドがどういう演奏をしてるのか聴きに来たのですが、 やはり、プロのバンドは素晴らしいですね。 高校生と比較してごめんなさい。

@@OklahomaCitySymphonicBand It is indeed a fine solo part. Another piece of Dr Reed's. the Armeinan Dances also has lovely English horn work in both the !st part and the second part. The second is less well known but has the best Eh part. If you've never played either you're in for a real treat. Hope you have or get the chance. He did write nicely for our Instrument.. Also nice to meet another Eh player. Not many of us. For many years I was both oboe and Eh as needed but had to give up the oboe in 2009 to an arthritic hand problem. So glad it did not affect my Eh playing. I'm mostly retired now but still do play Eh parts when asked. It was my main instrument in college.
