As an emo girl turned emo woman, the scene is still alive and well. We have so many good bands in the scene right now, just without the pop culture spotlight which in my opinion makes it even better and more genuine. Emo will never die!
what show/movie is at @4:04? thats cassie from skins 😭 she looks so beautiful!!!
None of you even know the difference between scene and emo. It shows though.
Wow Trisha is so skinny
we just became hipsters
I think emo got so big because it directly spoke to the only generation who was then online. Younger milennials were the first generation to grow up on the internet. With all their angst. And emo clothes and music mirrored that angst and put it into words. I felt so seen by those lyrics. Eventhough they now feel a bit melodramatic sometimes. But that’s what I was as a teen. So much love to the emo’s. ❤
I remember being “emo” in middle school 😂 it gave me and my friends who already weren’t popular an identity to adapt to. An identity that made us feel cool, edgy and impervious to the bullies that surrounded us. It was a fun time.
Subbed, thank you so much for this fantastic and well-researched video!!! Emo and scene culture/fashion is my biggest special interest and I still dress that way today (I'm 23). Also probably pretty easy to tell because my profile pic is of my emo OC I made years ago lol. I'm late gen z and I can't stress enough how much the internet-side of emo culture influenced me as a kid. I was obsessed with the concept of emos and would stare at their pictures on google forever lol especially all the ones I could find on myspace. Me and my friend were obsessed with emo boys and both loved emo bands, but mainly MCR. I remember seeing stuff like the art and pon & zi comics everywhere, I also watched a ton of anime that emos liked as well. I wanted to be emo so bad but my parents didn't let me pick my own clothes. I saw emos out in the wild a few times at the mall and I always thought 'I want to look like that' haha. Now thankfully that I'm grown up I dress both emo and scene whenever I feel like it and even work at hot topic, my customers call me 'that one scene girl' and I'm so happy that I'm dressing how I wanted to as a kid. The emo subculture is so special to me, the music particularly got me through a lot of my teenage years and helped me deal with my family struggles and my undiagnosed autism and depression. I owe so much to it and it's my biggest love to this day. (Still waiting for an emo boyfriend lol) AGAIN, thank you so much for this awesome video it really took me back!!!
I'm an Emo since the 90's. Emo was just short for "emotional" and you listened to "emotional" music. It turned into a name for a type of genre/style over time. But if you're an emotional person, it's not a choice. It's who you are.
i was a little kid during this era but i remember emos being made fun of but i thought it was cool and unique
i Wonder who was the first Emo ever 🤔
Super happy you included a Sony Aibo clip, as I have one! ❤
Your videos never miss 🩷 I remember being so fascinated by alternative styles as a kid
Not emo I was goth because I was a teen in the 90s
Aw I loved this video, so many memories of my early and late teens! My friendship group and I were all crazy about music, fashion and beauty. MySpace was our Vogue, music gigs and arty sixth form college our catwalks. It was all about the music, the big hair and the skinny jeans! This was a brilliant video, thank you for doing such a good job.
And its rising again !!
7:04 is exactly what my page looked like, I kinda miss MySpace 😭
love my emo brothers and sisters. hope yall had a good day today!
I remember first encountering emo through moviestarplanet having a themed competition of this aesthetic in 2011 or sum. It fascinated me a lot at 11/12, inspiring me to draw girls with the hair, makeup, clothing and emotional almost "mean/don't care" expressions. I then found some music and pics of real teens associated with the aesthetic and was so jealous of how they did the hair, clothing and makeup which I knew my mom would say no to. It also made me find animes like death note and elfen lied, CRAZY how the last one was my first graphic/adult anime at such a young age. On the outside I looked like a completely ordinary tween, but on the inside emo resonated with me as someone who was an outsider socially and an introverted child with low self-esteem about to enter teenagehood. In 2013-2014 I experimented a little bit with black clothing, neutral colors, bright red flannel shirt, listening to alt/rock/indie music etc. but it was more 2014 soft grunge than anything, but it always felt like me in some way. I also adored watching Dan&Phil during my teen years, I related to them in all ways possible from their personalities, being kinda emo/alt. in style to also being interested in gaming and anime. Although I was an easily influenced teen so my style jumped from one to the other and was a huge blend of everything during 2013-2016, the alternative music carried on as part of my music taste bc I could listen to it by myself with not anyone knowing. I was very insecure about expressing myself through clothing, so I just ended up following what everyone else wore usually. Nowadays after a number of identity crises, losing myself bc of life and experimenting way too much with specific styles, I've always felt like myself when I got back to having an alternative flair in my personal style and interests. I often reach for black over white, found cool flannel shirts, big leather jacket, love adding chains on one side of my jeans, neutral/muted/natural colors, graphic tees, black converse, martens. All this mixed with a laidback streetwear/vintage look and tattoos/piercings. Safe to say emo, the different variants of alternative internet culture stemming from past alt. cultures and "nerdy" culture has had an impact on me in many ways over the years, bringing a sense of belonging and helping me emotionally at the core of it, though I never went all in participating in these cultures.
Yes please scene!!
I love this
GOD I MISS THIS ERA I around to experience it but as an outsider i wish this nver went out of style. Hopefully we can see a huge wave of this aesthetic return. I love it 😂
Self harm and talk of su*cide was really prevalent but it was also (imo) the first generation that started to be open about mental health and depression. Everyone in my group of emo teens had ptsd or was neurodivergent in some way. We didn’t cope with it in the best ways and often people got caught up in alcohol and drugs and there was a lot of abuse and manipulation so I don’t want to romanticize it. But at the same time many of us tried to help each other the best we could and with very little resources or assistance. A couple of my best friends from that time are still my best friends now because we were there with each other, we saw each other’s internal struggles and got to know each other and learned to love each other because we were genuinely scared of losing one another. It made me feel compelled to take mental health seriously and always try to tell your friends they are important to you. It was also a lot of bad relationships with guys but I learned to embrace queerness and creativity with self expression which are things I also carry with me still. It was nice at least to be with guys who express themselves instead of being emotionally stunted, I learned to empathize with them a lot instead of just hating. And plus I think the ability to create digital self and have relationships online was exciting and it made a lot of us very creative and artsy. My group overlapped a lot with the skaters too
obsesssseeedddddd with your videos
I love emo!!! ❤☠️ 🖤
I remember Moe Howard dealing out the blows to the entire Jersey Shore cast in the 2012 Stooges movie
UH, Stop attaching Our and Our Parent's Cultures to THAT GARBAGE !
Rehashed Cultures Styles
Eating disorders and cutting was also sadly part of this aesthetic 😢🖤
Great video. I am a new fan of your channel and I love your vibe. Also, I can't tell the difference between the two Bottega bags, the kislux is close and cute, so that's enough for me. I will bring my friends to buy.
OMGG THATS ME ON THE WAY LEFT @ 30:25 >_< !!
not emo, it was called SCENE.
The shirt at 14:19 actually has a pro-nazi slogan written in german. Just wanted to point that out since i know you didnt mean to put that in on purpose
thanks so much for pointing this out, i had no idea. need to get better at checking that stuff. youtube won't let me blur this out (apparently bc i've got two audio tracks on this video wth), but i won't use that clip in future.
Anybody else getting a suicide prevention panel below the video? Don't know if that's the youtube algorithm being coincidentally funny, or if I should be concerned at what my viewing history implies about me. 🤣
In Germany the brand Ed Hardy was huge. Does anyone remember?
Unfortunately yes. RTL lässt grüßen 😂
Awesome video! This is a really good and comprehensive video about the emo subculture. Also, I made the 2 arts you used at 22:03 of the guy saying “I give you my heart”, and the guy with the scythe!
YOU'RE THE ARTIST??? Omg you're so cool. I love art like that sm, do you have any art socials I could follow?
The hipster cooptation of indigenous fashion/patterns was popularized well before 2009…
I thought this was a playlist, but it was a pretty good video instead
Pon&Zi gives me the most major nostalgia like immediate flashbacks. Emo art really stuck with me lol
Oh hell yeah. I was in high school from 2006-2010. I miss my super skinny jeans and knights of the abyss shirts.
Thank you for the video! Edit: Also, I might be wrong, but I think the leather accessories, especially the spiked ones, became part of punk in the 80s because of the large presence of the BDSM community within the movement. Also, workwear was always part of the punk esthetic, but it was subdued in the 80s in large part because of right-wing extremist groups co-opting the skinhead movement and as LGBT rights were increasing so people were less afraid to display and adopt fashion styles from the community. Workwear in punk isn't just to avoid participating in consumerism, but also a signifier of which social class we are in and on the side of. It means "I need to work to survive". Also, the tie in punk is always messy as a symbol of rebellion against authority. I don't think we hear the word as often, but even I remember people often calling ties things in the vein of "the corporate noose" or the "worker's leash" so wearing a messy tie expresses the resentment towards crappy office jobs. Se see it a lot less now, especially after the pandemic, but it used to be that basically every office worker had to wear a 3 piece suit or a power suit. It's funny, I grew up in a small town in the '90s and throughout the '00s. We were poor so we didn't get the internet until mid '00s. All I knew was that for many reasons, some I understood and others not, I didn't quite fit in anywhere. I don't remember if I first saw the American Idiot videoclip on RUclips or on MTV, but I remember that when I saw Billie Joe Armstrong in that video, I immediately knew who I wanted to be (appearance-wise) at the time. I didn't realize at the time why I wanted so badly to look like Billie Joe instead of like Avril Lavigne. I already listened to a lot of Avril Lavigne and being tempted to buy the American Idiot every time I had spending money and saw it at the store, but I was terrified of expressing myself and worried my mom would disapprove because of the grenade on the cover. I didn't know what punk was at the time, so I just longed to dress in the emo look and to be friends with the emo kids. I remember hanging out with them a couple of times in high school but I didn't do more because I was too poor too fully afford the look, too scared to express myself and hated wearing makeup with a passion. At least I did end up getting the courage to get a Simple Plan album since my mom looked into them and found out they helped the youth a lot so she didn't mind me listening to them. I'm glared I dared to get their album because their songs helped put a lot of my emotions into words at the time. Now that I know who I am it all makes sense. I think the emo look is neat, but now that I explored ideologies and music genres, I know I am a punk at heart, probably because of how poor I grew up and because of all the injustices my family and I have faced. I also realized that I am a guy, which explains why I wanted to be Billie Joe and not Avril Lavigne and now know that I hated makeup as much as I did (despite always being tempted by the eyeliner) because of how dysphoric it made me feel. Oh, and of course I was longing very badly to have a skateboard and learn how to skate but was too poor to have one and now I'm too old for it, Not saying there is an acceptable age to skate, but rather that I am going to be 34 soon and know my body will not heal like it would have in my teens and early 20s.
really like your videos can't wait to see the scene one. One aesthetic I never see covered is scemo a mix of scene and emo. It's really hard to find examples of this online.
Yes bro
Lol "scemo" is "stupid" in italian 😂
I know this was only uploaded 5 days ago but it deserves SO many more views I absolutely adore your videos
I have always been fascinated with emo aesthetics and culture, but I was a child when it was at its peak, and when I was a teenager I was embarrassed to want to try to get into aesthetics, it was not until I was 20 that I decided to try, now I am happy dressing like emo and listening to his music
We really lived in different worlds because the state I lived in the emo kids listened to shit like saves the day, wore girl jeans with some plain tshirt and their favorite comfort hoodie, or messy thrift store outfits (like shannyn sossamon in the rules of attraction) They hated hot topic and you’d be surprised how many of them were Christians. A lot of hxc shows were at churches. It was an “underground thing” because the music wasn’t played that much if at all on the radio or mtv. The all black MCR shit with the stripes and bright color is scene and that came after emo. And MCR was considered super cringey by anyone born before ‘89. (I graduated 2007)
I see Trisha paytas a d i almost clicked off, thinking it was one of her vids.
for real. her 'emo lifestyle' videos were so goofy lmao. also couldn't believe she hung out with johnnie guilbert in a vid with him considering how controversial she kinda is
living through that time as a teen was so special tbh. i miss it
this is beautiful while geeked
I am so glad I found your channel omg
