Quick demo with a Marshall JVM410HJS & sm57s. Don't criticise my playing, that's mum's job. 1960's lower SPL and slant cab makes this more like middleweight Marshall vs heavyweight Orange. The fairer fight would've been the PPC4412 vs the 1960b, perhaps? But the 1960a stacked on top of the ppc412 FTW IMHO. Hmmm i thought the orange was sposed to be compact
Compact, no. Roughly the same as the Marshall. Dense, YES! 10kg heavier.
🍊🧡
Both of these are excellent! I slightly favor the Marshall. Great job on this video!
Thanks. The Marshall could be described as more open & honest of one's playing. The Orange gives everything focus and attack. Horses for courses!
The first board I brought brand new was a burton and compared to the secondhand boards I had grown up with the burton was like going from riding a Shetland pony to a thoroughbred. Spat me off the back the first wave I caught on it, it just had that much drive compared to everything I had ever ridden. Great boards.
Holy shit orange cab with marshall head is a new thing, ok
Glenn Flucker would be proud
Marshall sounds like he's being voiced by a phone microphone. It actually sounds a lot better.
Do you still use the wally dolly?
I haven't used it in a while, no. That is no indication of how great a piece of kit it is, though. I know most folks use smaller dolly+track rigs for their mobile phones and canon full-frame cameras, but the travel you get from this small kit adds a more substantial movement dynamic to the shot.
@@BradPham thanks for the feedback. I’ve been tossing up between this and the Dana dolly
@@parkercreative_au Wally Dolly is suited to both small rigs and medium-sized rigs. I suspect the Dana Dolly is for a small rig.
u should work on lights in that room. its dark
It was very dark, yes. A little spooky, perhaps.
I know this was done 2 years ago but what model Fender is that? Or is it a Custom build? It's pretty sweet! Love the whole configuration and color! Thanks
Hey, it's a late 90's Japanese HSS Stratocaster that I brutalised into a type of Frankenstrat with a Seymour Duncan, Fender-spaced '59 humbucker in the bridge, and a genuine Floyd Rose "1984" locking tremolo. It sounds good but the fretboard and frets need a service. Thanks for asking!
Is that the original color or did you have it refinished? I love the color! Thanks man
@@CS-ru4xd The original finish is a veneer, called a fotoflame top. It was gloss but I sanded it back to a dull finish.
@@BradPham Looks really cool, I dig it!
They're a great combo. The Marshall is all mid's and the Orange slams in the lows and highs.
I love and have both cabs. I prefer the Marshall in a lot of situations but the Orange with the V30s definitely shines with a lot of amps.
Revisiting this, I feel that the cabs could’ve been better miced and that head was meh. Would’ve liked to hear a JCM 800 or plexi . Also, that orange with that tone would be completely lost in a live mix (too woofy and boomy). Not to say the orange isn’t good. They’re both great. I have the 1960a but my EVH 5150iii 412 is really the shit. Clean, dirty, vintage, modern…it’s quite musical (although not as well constructed as the Marshall. Thanks!
Thank you. Love your sense of humour and the video too/ It was very helpful.
It’s fun to turn up the 100 watt Marshall into two 4x12 cabs!
Marshall = grindy Orange= woofy
Good comments. Each has good and less good qualities.
Would you think a distortion pedal used in the right way, would give it that gritty sound like the Marshall?
never likes 1960s much, in this i feel like the orange destroys the 1960
I'd like to try this comparison again sometime. What is true is that they are very different beasts. The Orange is tighter with a thick bottom end. The Marshall is a bit looser. The Marshall 1960b would've been a better apples-to-apples comparison, wouldn't you agree?
Nice tone
It was a good combination, clean-ish JTM45 + drive pedal.

Hey, no worries. It was a quick and dirty but it was fun. That public music rehearsal room was great because I could turn the amp up to 11 (Spinal Tap) without offending anyone. But it's been closed for over two years now due to the bat virus!
The Orange is off the charts!!!
I've since reinforced the interior of the Marshall 1960a cab. I've also soldered the speaker wires. I've yet to test the results at volume to see if I get a better sound from the 1960a cab. Yes, the Orange PPC412 sounds mighty.
You can't really compare a straight vs slant cab as the straight cab will always produce a ton more bass due to the to direct reflection off the back of the cab. Mesa Boogie oversized 4X12 is the best cabinet hands down. Don't waste your $ on anything else. Here's a great video on the difference between straight and slant cabs and why they sound different ruclips.net/video/fj_WHO7lROg/видео.html
The V30 speakers in the PPC412 make a difference as well. I did have a MesaBoogie 4x12 oversized with V30's but I sold it for a song a while back. Doh! The Marshall JVM410HJS was designed with G12T-75 speakers in mind so I bought the 1960A. Would've liked a 1960B as well but couldn't get my hands on one. I've seen the Segeborn videos on the difference between slant and straight cabs. A great resource, he is. Satriani uses a 1960B straight cab with G12T-75 speakers when performing live.
I don’t trust a man if I can see his feet!
I'm assuming you look at your own feet. Do you trust yourself?
The orange kills the marshall. A marshall with greenbacks was the best sounding marshall cab ive tried out.
Yep. I've never heard a greenback in real life - only on the RUclips and in AC/DC's recordings.
The orange is V30s
El mejor de los mejores para mí de Marshall. Cable de la guitarra al equipo y a tocar, punto.
si si
Hi. The orange cab and speakers were made in uk?
I mention at the start that neither the Orange PPC412 nor the Marshall 1960A cab are old enough to have proper Made In England Celestion speakers. They’re all made in China. The good thing is that they’re old enough to be well broken in already!
Cabs built in uk…..speakers Chinese (they sound great though!)
@@Ron4president09 This. I've recently picked up a pair of new Chinese V-30s. I've not had to break a speaker in myself so I'm interested to hear just how harsh they are fresh out of the box. Some folks have said the difference between new and well-broken-in is night and day. We'll see soon, I hope! (that public music rehearsal room is still closed due to covid restrictions. I can't turn my amp up to 11 in my place of residence).
@@BradPham very cool, how are you liking the new v30’s so far. I have a new orange ppc212 i still need to break in. Good way is to program a looper pedal and let it just play and play and play
@@Ron4president09 Thanks for the tip. I've not put the new V30's in to the bottom of the 1960A just yet. I'm either procrastinating or I'm nervous about taking the two OG G12T-75's out of the bottom of the cab. You may have prompted me to carry out the task shortly.
Nice riffs mate. 🔥
Hey, thanks. Unfortunately that rehearsal room has been off limits for over a year due to the pandemic. It was a good space to just turn things up and feel the 100 watts of valve power through a quad box.
Great comparison, I though I loved the Marshall until I heard the Orange. So much presence and fill, great aura
Also, would love better audio for the full stack part, sounded real interesting
@@SweWince The Orange PPC412 cab has a more defined character straight of the box. The 1960a cab is more of a, dare I say it, rhythm player's cab. Even Satriani, uses the 1960b cab because it has more punch than the 1960a. The full stack is more of a flavour that you get used to. Unfortunately I whimped out and sold the PPC412 but picked up a PPC212. This was to save a bit of space. Do I regret selling the monster PPC412? Yes. But do I need the space? Yes.
Lol I thought I loved the orange until I heard the Marshall 😂. Credit to the man who made the video tho great comparison.
Orange all the way!
Folks who care prefer orange cabs for their superior build and aural focus and tightness. Some people, however, just get a Marshall 1960 cab and never look any further. I'm happy I've been able to give both a spin.
Great video
Thanks. I'd like to do another one soon. I've reinforced the black Marshall cab. Hopefully it's made a different. Can't turn it up at the moment due to covid.
Why you turn up the normal volume if there is no bridge with the high treble?
Purple Rain intro
Similar chord structure but not the same. What gives it the Purple Rain vibe is the Asus9 chord - I think that’s what it’s called. Wendy Melvion plays the riff a step higher with Bflat sus9.
@@BradPham Thanks for your review. What do you think about adding an fx loop to these wonderful amplifiers, it somehow changes the plexi tone that we're looking for, what would be the pros and cons of using fx loop, and what kind of loop would be the best?.
@@Summer69. There are plenty of threads from last few decades in this but not as much these days. Focus has shifted, through changes in tech and also the corona virus, to virtual amps, line 6 helix, two notes, axe fx, boss waza, and the list goes on. Purists want the Marshall hand-wired reissues of the JTM45 and 1959SLP. An fx loop is seen as a dilution of the signal, effects should go before the amp, and don’t bother with delay & reverb with the plexi. I’m of that opinion. Want reverb? Get a Fender Twin Reverb and turn the volume up to 11! If you just have delay, use an instrument level signal analogue delay pedal (mxr carbon copy?) and put it after your fuzz & wah pedals. You probs agree that this is the purist view.
@@BradPham You're right about the focus given to all those new software (Helix,. Fractal etc). Personally I dont like them. I'm old school tone. It would be great if Marshall re-edited the jtm45, 1959slp, JMP plexis, but handmade point by point, the problem would be the cost hahaha. I was asking you about the fx loop, since I was planning to buy in the near future a clone of the jtm45 or a 1959superlead, but I had doubts about the loop, more than anything about the use of the delays in front amp. I only used 2 delays (dd3 and a carbon copy). My pedal chain is very small and classic only used wha - phase 90 MXR - chorus small clone - MXR carbon copy - boss dd3 - and sometimes Marshall reflector reverb but very light, although I was thinking of removing it from the chain. About the fx loop it was only my doubt if the delays or the chorus, but I wanted to keep the tone of the amplifier as pure as possible.
@@Summer69. You’re talking yourself into a corner there. If you want the pure amp tone it’s best you go into the front of the amp with your fx. My view is that the cranked plexi sound doesn’t want reverb at all. It doesn’t need delay either, unless you like it for solos. In which case your solo is going to be so awesome that it won’t need delay! I recall a period where the 1959SLP reissue had a built in fx loop. I see the Marshall website only has the 1959SLP available only in the hand wired version at present. Obviously, no fx loop in it.
I would prefer a 5U4 rectifier in that amp to get a little more sponge in the bottom end. I played an original JTM and yours definitely sounds very close to it.
Earl Heath More of a classic sound you’re chasing. Regrettably I sold this JTM45 reissue. I’ve not had the skills nor materials at my disposal to mess around with different rectifiers, transformers etc.. Enjoyed some of your videos. Do you still do amp mods yourself?
Bogan Con Lai ruclips.net/video/Xl-ii3v-2fU/видео.html I build amps and mod them as well. I also wound the pickups in the video above.
@@Earlvis Hey, that's a tough sounding amp. 6L6?
@@Earlvis Yeah, that's a pretty tough looking amp.
Bogan Con Lai Peter Mather built the cabinets for me in Scarlet Red with Mesa Cane grille cloth. My bandmates call it the Red-Headed Step Child.
Orange sounds more tight, more bassy
Devotionals Depeche Mode Tribute Band In addition you the speaker’s own character, the heavy, sturdy, precision construction of the Orange cab adds to the tightness. I added some minor extra bracing to the inside of Marshall 1960a cab last week. It has made a noticeable difference IMHO. Bit heavier now too, unfortunately! 😆
Bogan Con Lai that’s a good idea !!!
I prefer the marshall
Good to hear people's perspectives. The Marshall 1960a has a more even frequency response to my ears whereas the Orange PPC412 is tighter and punchier. I kept the audio levels between the two as recorded. I'm sure in a real mixing situation you'd bring the Marshall up (or bring the Orange down).
Which is which ...please explain ! Playing on the left and right doesn't explain...!
Hey. This video was a bit rushed from the get go. However, I alternate for each riff, playing the Marshall 1960a first each time. There are two big giveaways for the Orange and the Vintage 30 speakers - louder with a tight but fat bass and a tight but muted top end. The mids, which I always thought of as strong are, well, the high mids are swallowed up by the tight bass. BY COMPARISON, the Marshall 1960a with the G12T-75 is almost the opposite - quieter, looser, and with a more even frequency response. It should be noted that I didn't boost the level of the Marshall 1960a to match the higher output of the Orange cab. It would have sounded better a bit louder however I wanted to get a more raw comparison between the two cabs.
Hey what sort of les paul is that? looks real nice! Where can I get one?!
Josh Howe www.vintagejapanguitars.com.br/en/greco-guitar-catalogues/
Josh Howe I bought that Greco guitar from a guitar repair & secondhand dealer. I didn’t know what they were prior to that. Check one of my earlier videos - I believe it is an EGC68-50.
Great video! You like to tell which song that is that youre playing at 1:19?
A riff I've had for many years now. Bit of 80's hair metal riffing, thrash, pop and punk inspiration.
That's a good one
Orange sounds vintage and the Marshall more modern to me! Nice vid👍
Good to have your point of view. The Marshall JVM410HJS was designed to be played with a Marshall 1960 full stack of G12T-75, ie, both 1960a and 1960b. I notice that Satriani uses the 1960b when he tours. I could consider his sound more modern and slightly scooped. I guess Slash's sound is more vintage, hence he favours the V30. Watched your Ice 9 with Gibson SG clip. You're a great player.
@@BradPham thanks very much, too kind eheh btw glad you liked it! Yes indeed love the more scooped sound of satriani, I think that's why he also uses much more the neck humbaker, it's kind Of a similar "sound" directions. Slash sound I think is the best mix of a vintage and modern sound around (for heavy rock), don't you think? Btw great riffs and playing in the vid! I like the rocker height of the guitar too! 😎
Danilo Ricci Never heard Satriani out of an SG before. Good one! Not so much the gear but the player. Doesn’t stop us from buying gear though! They say the V30 cuts through a band mix better which has suited Slash over the years. Satch isn’t really competing for air time so he’s free to use wider range of dynamics and pitch. Yep, he does great work with the neck pickup.
@@BradPham yeah good observations, cool to put together slash and satch in a sound comparison!! Eheh
@@DaniMustangMeazzi Was thinking about this. Couldn't have come from more different rock genres. But then again, they were the two sides to the same coin - 80's rock. Satch was the guitar hero whiz kid and Slash had a swagger, a top hat, a one-of-a-kind Kris Derrig Les Paul rip-off, a modded Marshall, and, like you said, he was bringing classic rock into the modern era. I grew up in the 80's/90's and, yep, these two were different sides of the same coin - guitar heroes in a golden age of guitar. Every charting song featured a guitar.
Cool video what can do you prefer?
Bryan Becerra I’d like to keep both. Orange PPC412 with V30’s: louder, compressed, focussed, & tight ... BUT much heavier to lift. Marshall 1960a with G12T-75’s: quietER, loose, flatter frequency response ... BUT still a bit scooped. I’ve become accustomed to using both at the same time. The Orange cabinet is more solidly built. If I had time I’d swap out the speakers between the two and see how that affects their sound. Then I’d try each cab with two V30’s on the bottom and two G12T-75’s up top. If I had to get rid of one I’d prefer to get rid of both and replace with one Orange PPC212 and a Marshall 1936 2x12!
Hey sweet guitar! I think I’m about to pull the trigger on a mint collection 1984. How do they compare to Gibson studios or high end epiphones?
xNimrod97x Honestly can’t make the comparison to Gibson Studio because I don’t own one. I’ve heard some great ones on RUclips, though. This last year it has been reported that Epiphone guitars are competitive for quality and price. Very early Epiphone guitars are often well regarded too. The Mint Collection Greco series were great guitars. Many folks would say such a Greco in good condition could trump ANY Gibson or Epiphone. I don’t believe that is entirely true but, having said that, there is a good chance it’ll sound better than the 2 guitar types you’ve mentioned. But these things can be hit & miss so PLEASE play the guitar before you purchase. If you can’t do that, you’ve really got to ask as many questions of the seller as you can. E.g., weight (chambered or solid body), neck profile (baseball bat vs slim taper & in between), neck tenon (long tenon is ideal, IMHO), nitro or poly finish, width at nut & at join, pickups (dry Z or screaming 82 etc), fret type & wear, neck binding (none makes a refret cheaper). If you can take your time to consider at least these points it should help you make a decision.
did you buy it?
@@airbag97 I did not. I ended up with a Burny Custom, one of the last years they were in Japan. It’s awesome! Way above Epiphone in my opinion. It’s quickly became my favorite guitar.
Just occurred to me that the flubby bottom end you hear from the G12T-75 speakers via the sm57 mic is not audible in the room. I’ll have to work on my recording technique. Any suggestions from experience are welcome.

how loud is the jtm45 compared to say, a 50 4 input marshall amp? is there a significant volume drop between the jtm45 and a 50 watt marshall? thank you
Uncle Dave I have a 100W Marshall JVM410HJS running only two power tubes. So kinda like 50W. Sorry I couldn’t tell if one was louder because they’re both pretty loud. The tones are different with the JTM45 a one-trick authentic rock tone and the 410HJS being a jack-of-all-trades master-at-none. That being said they both sound their best, and by that I mean awesome, fully cranked.
