My best guess is that the safety valve of the propane tank blew. Either faulty or due to overheating of the tank. The tank might have been kept too close to the hot boiler, possibly a design flaw.

I read some comments, and I too am certain this was/is a propane failure and NOT a steam boiler explosion. I suspect the propane is used to heat the water tank(s) to generate the steam. One scary moment - it looks like everyone ran clear and are safe. Yikes!!

Had that been an actual steam explosion, a LOT of people would have likely died and been severely burned and injured.

It's one thing to have a fire extinguisher and another thing to know how to use it. It's also one thing to have a fire truck and another thing to know how to use it.

Okay lets be a bit more clear, using the word explosion in one line with the word steam is, for us who work with these vintage steam engines, the worst kind of thing that can ever happen. If such a thing were to happen anywhere within the worldwide steam community it would be less than 24 hours for everyone of us to know. It would mean the loss of life and also mean that one of us were treading lightly on safety operating such a machine. It would cast a shadow on all of us. So Never say steam ....... explosion unless its true. Please revise the title and stop defending this ill choice of words to gain more views. As for the calliope catching fire I still considder it a huge failure on behalf of the ones operating it. also a gastank can have serious concequences when it goes off.

I still laugh at all the random people who run over carrying no water or extinguisher acting like they can help.

Maybe they can now build one that is in tune, and maybe run it off compressed air instead.

They're very lucky this didn't result in a BLEVE. The geniuses with their fire extinguishers would have been seriously injured.

Extinguishers are useless unless you can shut off the gas.

I've seen photos of steam locomotives that blew all its flue tubes out the front. I've even worked on a narrow track locomotive that had a dry tube with dual valves. When take apart the main dry tube fell off. That's why it did not want to stop.

This points up something that everyone using propane for any heating purpose should look for. Usually, we have copper tubing on any permanent piping on gas grills, household heaters, water heaters and kitchen stoves. Those pipes need to be inspected periodically. On the Caliope, it was probably metal fatigue from vibration that caused the gas leak, leading to the fire. Make sure that your gas supply can't get out where it is not supposed to go.
