I wanted my mountain bike to roll faster so I switched the rear tire from Maxxis DHR II to Maxxis Dissector. What a difference! Well, not exactly what you might think. Watch before you make the switch.

    SLX is the best overall in my opinion. FYI, you UPSHIFT to a smaller cog. The biggest cog is 1st, the smallest is 12th.

  • @SuckTheseStandards
    @SuckTheseStandards 22 дня назад

    Other than the price being overly expensive, I don't agree with your comments on the XTR shifters. I do have a set of the SL-M985's and I love how they shift and likely the 11-spd and 12-spd versions are even better. The index finger action and the multi-actuation is the key functions of the superb shifter including on how accurate and crisp the shifts are. The other things you're missing that you didn't realize with the XTR is when the cable release is. It should release the cable on press, not on release. I noticed that when you're pressing and downshifting on the XTR lever (what you call upshifting to the larger cogs), you were doing it without actually getting the derailleur engaged onto the larger cogs. When you're doing it with the Deore shifter, you were actually engaging the derailleur by turning the crank arm. It would be tougher to push down the shift lever as the cable tightens and the derailleur becoming harder to move without allowing it to properly move inside to the bigger cogs. I agree that the lever swing is a bit long in addition to a longer lever for down shifting (to lower gears or larger cogs). My thumb isn't all that long and usually, I move up the cogs by 3, not 4. Upshifting (to harder gears or what you call downshifting to smaller cogs), by 2 is what no other manufacturers can do and that index finger shift along with thumb push is ingenious. I use mostly the index finger and you should get used to it. The reason why I say this is because you do not shift and brake at the same time. And yes, I use one finger shifting and when I'm going downhill fast, my finger is mostly on the brake levers, especially the left index finger on the front brake. The right index finger will be on the rear brake on the steep parts and on-and-off on the less steep parts if I need to shift to hard gears. Definitely on rolling, the right index finger moves between the brake lever and the upshift lever. The other thing I noticed about your XTR I-Spec-EV setup is that I don't think it is at it's optimal setting. If that is a SL-M9100 shifter, it allows for 60-degree rotation. You've got it set up right up underneath the bottom of the right brake lever body and shifted too far to the left. Since you thumb isn't all that long, you should set it up so that it ergonomically fit your right hand better or get the bar clamp version rather than use the I-Spec version. I always get the bar clamp version so I'm not dependent on the brake lever and I-Spec version, which are very proprietary to the group release version. Final thing is, the XTR overall is a much more robust and more durable than the lower models, even more durable than the XT's. However, the XT's will give the XTR's a run for their money. The shifter is the brain of the operation and this is the heart of the drivetrain. If I can't afford the XTR, I'd definitely go for the XT's but if money is not an issue, XTR's is my go to. What you're experiencing sounds more like someone who'd go for what SRAM has. Their shifters are exactly what you want. Their stuff are cheap but you actually spend twice to 3x as much for what you get from Shimano and I can say Shimano's functionality and durability is that much better! One last thing is that there are videos comparing differences between XTR, XT, SLX, and Deore 12-spd shifters. Both the XTR and XT shifters have more protection against dirt and their ratcheting system uses dual ball bearings as opposed to the SLX and Deore. Someone did mention that Deore is very similar to SLX and that you're likely better off with the lesser version based on price since the performance is very similar. Like I said, it the XTR shifter isn't twice the cost of the XT, it's a no-brainer. You just need to learn how to use the index finger to shift "down" on your drivetrain. Once you learn that, you'll know what I mean. Nothing else can match that.

    Thanks for the video! I purchased a new model year MB this week from a top brand with a Doere shifter and I love it! Now I know I am not missing anything by not upgrading to the XTR. I came across your video as I am two years into mountiain bike riding from having a skinny tire hybrid which I found far less comforrable than a mountain bike. The fatter tires, beefier frame and ability to ride more comfortaably on multiole surface types is why I changed bike types. I felt every imperfiection and crack iin the ground on the hybrid. The mountain bike by comparison, feels like riding on cushions. Back on point... I typically shift one gear at a time quicxkly in both directions, but I plan to try the multiple gear shifting you demonstrated the next time I rgo ide my new mountain bike in a couple of days.

    I've used the Dissector as a back tire for the last couple of years - good traction and rolling speed, pretty good in the wet too. The EXO+ MaxxTerra version lasts for about a year, so that's enough in my book.

    Hey man good video however there are 2 things that you need to understand about tires. 1) those groves/slits in the tire. Those are Not wear indicators. They are called TIRE SIPING. Sips are designed to help the knobs or tire conform to harder objects mainly rocks, roots or logs for additional grip. Look it up even auto tires have them. 2) for a rear tire you need a harder compound. Looks like you have the max grip 3c compound grip, which is really soft. Maybe switching to a dual compound or something harder which makes the tire last longer would be a better option. As for tires. Everyone talks about Maxxis. You should consider other brands. I'm a Schwalbe guy and for me they are better. I have maxxis DHF and DHR 2 on one bike and Schwalbe Nobby Nic (front) ans Wicked Will (rear) and that combo is awesome. Fast rolling very gripy and no drift. When my maxxis wear out I'm gonna get Schwalbe tires. My cousin was all about Maxxis, he damaged his bike and borrowed mine with the Schwalbe and right away told me that this bike rolls fast and was gripy. At times I had trouble keeping up with him on my newer YT Jeffsy with Maxxis DHF/DHR 2 combo. My cousin said he wants to get Schwalbe now. Good video btw.

    I have been riding Shimano componentry the past 15years. He is not complaining but stating the facts. Currently I have SLX and I like the smooth shifting a lot better than XT that I used to have. Most people ride for fun and recreationally and don’t need the hard press barely faster shifting, unless you are racing and every split second matters. Great video, right on the money for majority of the riders out there. 👍

    I've got a Ripley V4 as well and it came with the DHRII on the rear and I swapped it out for a Dissector and have run the tire for roughly 2 seasons (April through the end of December) on steep, rooty, rocky New England single track and have had zero issues w/sliding or with knobs coming off. I'm riding roughly 350-450 miles per season with roughly 120k' of climbing/descending each season over lots of granite and shale/slate surfaces and in lots of wet leaves spring and fall. You must ride on some seriously abrasive surfaces. I also run MaxxTerra and don't ever ride asphalt (like to/from trailhead, etc.). Tread choice, sidewall choice and compound choice are extremely location dependent..what works in loamy conditions may not work (and won't last as long) in Moab.

    I have now DHR II maxxterra in the back that is still good, but used, and I have DHR II maxxgrip in the front that is pretty new. For this new season I want more traction for pedaling techy uphill stuff so I want maxxgrip rubber now. I was looking at the Dissector but as you and others have said it just doesn't do too well. That's why I think I'll just go with DHR II maxxgrip both front and rear, as I personally really dislike the DHF because it's vague feeling between no lean to full lean because there's just simply no knobs there. I do not want to slide half lean every turn in the front so DHR II is just better there even though it is technically a rear tire, lots of others use it as front as well.

    • @udtrader

      DHR II MaxGrip on the front rolls much faster than DHF with solid turns without lean outs. What I'm riding now is Forekaster 2.4 Gen 2 tires and never been happier. Fast rolling, excellent grip, and solid leans into berms with confidence.

      @@udtrader Forekaster is a much lighter thread pattern and it only comes with maxxterra. I only want maxxgrip now and I also want a thread pattern that will have more bite to it. I ride a Pivot Switchblade, and even though I don't ride very hard I still want to trust my front tire especially. Even for pedaling up longer fireroad sections I still feel the DHR II in maxxgrip rolls very good for what kind of bike I'm using. That's why I'm not going to step down in the front, that's just a no go. I do already own a set of Continental Trail King which was a big mistake in my eyes because they have just no bite to them at all for trail riding. If you hit a wet root it's game over. Those tires I'd rather say is aimed for perfect dry conditions in very light terrain.

      Shifting on XTR is great with firm click, but Deore/SLX levers need half the pressure to shift. On a 2 hour technical trail where you're constantly shifting, my preference is the SLX lever. If you're going downhill, then you probably don't even need a shifter. ;)

    This is the problem with pretty much all modern road and mountain bike gear: The arms race between Shimano and SRAM has resulted in both of them trying to jam more and more features into the same tiny space / motion... while at the same time trying to reduce waste. We're already WAY past the point where the vast majority of users can really benefit from these continuous "improvements". Can we not just call it good and just focus on marginal gains in quality and ergonomics over time instead of trying to constantly "innovate" to the point where the systems are incompatible within a few years... vs "the good ol' days" when you could mix and match parts almost indefinitely.

    I was leery of Tikosyn and refused it for months. Finally, I was in the hospital for a throat infection, and the EP doctors convinced me to take it, since I was in the hospital anyway. The next morning, anxious (they try not to show it) doctors awakened me and said that the med was not right for me, and there was a dangerous delay of signals between chambers of my heart. I was in the hospital for 3 more days getting a magnesium drip. I survived the Tikosyn and an overdose of magnesium. I should have followed my instincts! It is good that it worked for you, though.
