TLDR: Safeguard expensive items, it's very worth it even if it's just for 16 stars because that's where you spend 90% of your time doing 15-22 even during shining. Shining numbers: 15-22 safeguarding gives you an average of 2.42 booms and 11B, 15-22 without safeguarding is 3.97 booms and 8.3B. At 18B a zerk that means you save on average 25.2B by safeguarding. Every star from 15 is a 30% chance, so most of the time going from 15-20 is spent at 16 because you have a 70% chance of going down and 30% chance of going up. When you hit 21 your luck was slightly above average in both spending and booms, no safeguard for 21 is 2.16 booms and 5B, you boomed twice and spent around 4.5b.

When 5th job first came out the stones were not optional btw, and many were grinding at ToT for the exp stones to fill up and nothing was unlocked when you get the 5th job skills, and arcane symbols weren't loaned to you to complete the quests, something to think about before you complain.

This is why KMS has no totems. In KMS al jobs are balanced if they can clear a map within the 7 seconds that rewpawn takes, it's just easier fo some jobs to clear compared to others, but in GMS since there is basically no rewpawn cooldown when using a totem you can have a job pull 20k mobs /h and another pull 50k like this one. I really hope that totems go away....
