I'm born and raised in Hawaii out in the country and grew up surfing from age 5. We had a beach house on the North Shore of Oahu right at Ehukai/Pipeline. I'm a few years younger than Shaun, but I loved surfing more than anything! Since I grew up right in our beach house with Pipeline right there, I had the best waves every winter and became extremely good at surfing. We really respected Shaun, and he was innovative in his surfing by the way he would ride in the tube. He was really the first guy to turn rail to rail and pump in the tube, and his tube riding at Off the wall and Pipeline really changed the way tube riding progressed!!! I was always out surfing especially at Backdoor and off the wall on all the best days and usually the first guy out cause I would paddle out in the dark and be surfing at first light!! I became friends with him, and we shared many memorable sessions at off the wall and I preferred Backdoor Pipeline as I'm regular foot. We used to watch each other pulling into these incredible spitting tubes, and we really were changing tube riding pushing the limits!!! I will never forget one particular Thanksgiving afternoon when it was just as good as it gets 6-8ft. "Hawaiian" and we paddled out together, and he was surfing off the wall and I paddled straight out to Backdoor Pipeline as it was just so good with perfect conditions!!!! He remembers this afternoon and will never forget it!!! I would always remind him of that Thanksgiving afternoon and we would both get so stoked remembering how good it was!!! I was surfing Backdoor all by myself with only 3 or 4 guys surfing the lefts at Pipeline. It was really uncrowded because everyone usually has Thanksgiving dinner around 4-5pm, so it was great!!! He had one of his favorite surfboards he was riding that afternoon, a blue and white round pin single fin, as this was in the mid 70's and before thrusters! It was the same board he rode at off the wall in the movie Free Ride, and one of his favorites! He told me he was traveling in the tube, and some surfer didn't know any better and and got right in the way and Shaun ended up running over the guy and his skeg went several inches into this guys board and they were stuck together. I think it damaged the fin on Shaun's board pretty bad he had said. But, over the years whenever we'd see each other we would always talk about how perfect it was at otw and Backdoor that Thanksgiving afternoon!!! One of the best times I have surfed it, and for him too!! Much respect always for him, and his surfing in the tube!!! Aloha from beautiful Hawaii. D.L.

Thanks bro, I realized I can eat clementines (small mandarines) like this and don't have to bother peeling it. I also realized I feel more healthy by eating the peel. To protect my teeth from acid I swish first, and after, my mouth with water or oil (e.g. olive oil), acts as buffer, and to neutralize any too strong bitter taste I can first chew cashew nuts. I feel like the peel is more effective vs scurvy. You look cool BTW.

Jeffrey's Bay was one of my favourite places to reside in. Miss it

What about asking in Andrew Marr for a podcast? Lots of big wave legends to call upon but I think Andrew would be fantastic on your show.
