    First of all 29,000 feet is not a normal altitude for a Transatlantic flight…second of all you weren’t on a 747…a 787 can cross the Atlantic at an altitude in excess of 40,000 feet so flying all the way down at 29,000 burns a huge amount of extra fuel…

    29,000 feet is actually really low for flights across the Atlantic, around 10,000 feet lower than usual for the aircraft you were on. Also, you were on a 787-10 not a 747. 😊

  • @zaphod4245
    @zaphod4245 2 месяца назад

    Looks like you were on a 787, not a 747 (BA retired the 747 in 2020), though the 787 has a longer range. But 29,000ft is low, normally a widebody jet like this will cruise at 35-40,000ft. And ofc they want to load the minimum fuel, if they're wasting fuel that'll drive up ticket prices, all airlines do this, it's not exclusive to BA. They also had to land in Ireland because there are strict rules around how much fuel a plane needs to have, they need to carry enough fuel to be able to hold for a while, plus enough to be able to do a go around in case they have to abort the landing for whatever reason. It would be incredibly risky to land just as the tank runs out. So they would have been just too low, below the legal limit, when reaching london, so had to land early when their reserve was still at a safe level. You were never at risk of running out of fuel.

    • @_TravelDog_
      @_TravelDog_ 2 месяца назад

      Thank you. That’s v interesting. It does seem to be the case from what people have said that there was less chance of crashing into the sea that I thought! I still wonder why they didn’t take the weather into account when calculating fuel needed.

The flight departed from the new Orlando terminal on the day it began operation. It was chaos all round. I watched the BA plane arrive and its servicing. It was mayhem and I thought to myself how easy it would be for one the tenders to damage a door seal, given the way they were being operated - and I was right. BA should have been on the ground supervising operations until they were sure it was up to standard. It was the chaos on the replacement flight the following day, with delays due to not being able to close the cargo door properly!

      Yes you may well be right. I couldn’t remember which it was it may have been a 777. In thought that 747 mileage was a good indicator as I’m guessing the 777 as a newer plane has further and more effective range. Do u think the scrimp on the fuel to save money.

    • @Digital_Arachnid
      @Digital_Arachnid 2 месяца назад

      @@_TravelDog_ They don't "scrimp" on fuel as you say it, the pilots which is the same with all airlines are trained to calculate and input how much fuel they request for a flight so that ground crew can put the required ammount, they are also trained to not over fuel and waste money so they only put in the required ammont of fuel almost as if its common sense , However what most likely happened in this situation is they encountered headwind slowing down their route and costing more fuel and they dont have enough fuel to meet the IFR regulations (normaly 30-45 minutes) therefore diverted to the airport ATC gave them, This is not the airlines fault and is a common occurance of trans-atlantic routes. Unfortunatley to your dissapointment, BA cannot control the weather!

    • @Ben-xe8ps
      @Ben-xe8ps 2 месяца назад

      The explanation of burning more fuel at a lower altitude is certainly valid and 29,000 feet, if that was the altitude you were flying at, is certainly a lower than normal altitude. I can't tell what type of aircraft that was as I can''t see the full interior cabin seating configuration, but in any event the theoretical maximum range of the aircraft is irrelevant. The captain will not carry maximum fuel. He will carry the amount of fuel needed for the flight and the legally required reserves. Something happened to cause the aircraft to use more fuel than was anticipated. You also mention that there was some sort of delay after boarding. Were the engines running during this delay on the ground, thereby using up fuel? It is highly unlikely that you were close to running out of fuel over the ocean. The announcement from the Captain about 'maximising out his credit card' was a not very funny joke and unprofessional. Apart from the fact that BA would have credit facilities at SNN and even if they didn't aircraft carry a company fuel card to cover this sort of situation. To change the subject, that meal looked awful. What is it with airlines and couscous starters these days? If there was any scrimping it was on the food. I see BA have jumped on the wooden cutlery bandwagon as well. There is no need for airlines such as BA to provide such poor economy class catering on a long haul flight; it wouldn't cost that much extra to provide something decent.

    • @_TravelDog_
      @_TravelDog_ 2 месяца назад

      @@Digital_ArachnidI appreciate BA can’t control the weather but do the pilots not take the weather into account when calculating the fuel? You weren't close to running out of fuel you were most likely close to arriving overhead London with less than IFR reserves (30 minutes extra flying time) and diversion fuel (to fly to nominated diversion airport) which would have been a violation. I thought the "joke" about maxing out a credit card to bunch of delayed passengers was in particularly poor taste.

      That’s really interesting. I didn’t realise they needed both extra 30 mins and diversion fuel. That makes more sense. Thank you! Yes I didn’t think the joke was in best taste! Although friends of mine made the joke as well before they saw this!

      @@_TravelDog_ Depending on flight conditions (good or bad weather) it could also have been enough fuel to get to London - then to the nominated diversion, which could be something like East Midlands or Birmingham and then fly around for another 45 minutes. You definitely weren't in any danger but unless you experienced extreme headwinds over the Atlantic (unlikely eastbound) it's fairly poor that this happened. Maybe someone else will chime in with some more details - it would be interesting to know if they are penny pinching on fuel. It seems unlikely because they would have to pay fees for landing where they stopped along the way!

      @@relativenormalityinteresting they have to pay where they land on the way but I guess of course they would. It was a bit bumpy and the seat belts were on for a while but nothing extreme.
