'Singapore You Are Not My Country' is possibly the nation's most controversial and prophetic poem.
First published in 1998 by a then 21-year-old Alfian Sa'at, the Beat-poetry-inspired stream-of-consciousness satirical paean was cited 21 years later by PAP Minister Ong Ye Kung to characterise the poet/playwright as an activist/dissident/traitor, and the accusation was repeated in 2020 by PAP MP Tan Wu Meng.
PAP politicians are predisposed to cite poems and black metal lyrics to justify censorship of the arts.
