Just came back from Claire talk. Brilliant talk, amazing research, so many anegdotes. I really enjoyed listening to Claire. Of course purchased the book and cant wait to start reading it.
This is a marvellous discussion & primer, but, the audio is a bit inconsistent. Lord Sumption is extremely quiet. I was wondering whether he was placed far-away from the microphone. Still a great conversation, but maybe next time you could do something about the audio.
The idea that the British armed forces were unprepared is in a way valid, and the only reason is methamphetamine. ALs the 8 million vats of crude oil given to Germany by prince Bernhard of the Netherlands fueled hitlers Blitzkrieg. But thinking they were unprepared for traditional warfare is not right. They were expecting war, they got a blitz.

@@marklivingston7957 Stoicism isn’t for everyone and that's fine! I hope you're able to listen to something you find interesting
@@HistorywithJackson I'm down with stoicism. This is just a super boring podcast.
@@marklivingston7957each to their own! Really appreciate the supportive nature of your comments
That poor horse :(
what's your beef with Hendry the 6th man?
Mercedes is a joke
It’s not even pride month anymore mate
That’s just on their sign
This is very cool 😎
Thank you for the invitation. I enjoyed your questions very much.
Amazing story! It has taken years and no doubt will take more for the Poles' contribution in the war effort to be recognised. Thank you Clare for your part in this.
Amazing! What a fascinating story.. It has taken years and no doubt will take more, for the true contribution of Poles in the war effort to be recognized. Thank you Clare Mulley for your part in this.
Very good video, congratulations
Well done but the papacy resides in Avignon since 1309, not 1217. There is no doubt Urban VI was a psycho and I agree that Norwich´s book is excellent.
Come on
Perfect timing! I started the book yesterday evening haha.
Innocent III was easily the most demon possessed pope ever, and that's saying a lot. He was undeniably one of the five worst popes evil. Your belief that being evil makes him a good pope is insane. No offense.
Love carry on

Hello😊
Let’s goooooooooooo
This is a lovely way to pass on the enthusiasm for history and portraying great characters. Top marks to Jackson and the Regal Roses. ❤
Well well, finally something about this subject. FYI Speculatore hq and training center was in castra peregrina in Rome and its ruins are visible today and across the street from the Italian Military Hospital. The author might want to know that it was a Speculatore who severed the head of John the Baptist, FID, foreign internal defense was a key mission of theirs and if you look at the Roman order of battle, eg units, In Judea in that time you will not find any Legions stationed there. Anyone studying this subject should look at the key missions of todays US Army Special Forces and they track except for downed pilot recovery. There’s more I could say about this subject but will hold off unless asked.
Mmmmmm
Gwynne's Kings and Queens - I have that book, and it really is a lot of fun to read. However, its historical value is nil. He is not a scholar, and it shows. Gwynne has no sense of source criticism _at all,_ gladly latching onto any source - no matter how disreputable - if it conforms to his biases. He flatly states that Elizabeth is "the most evil woman that ever lived". Bear in mind that Gwynne is a staunch Catholic, and he has no qualms about letting that colour his views on Catholic and Protestant rulers. There are certain sections which are particularly bad, from a scholarly point of view, and those are - in chronological order - as follows: Arthur Alfred John Henry VIII Mary I Elizabeth I Except for the Tudor ones, those monarchs are treated with a preposterous and indeed childlike amount of reverence and adulation - they could do no wrong in Gwynne's book. As for the Tudor ones - just the opposite. Gwynne even regurgitates an old libellous rumour from the 18th century by a certain William Cobbett, who claimed that Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII's daughter (and that Elizabeth I was thus the result of incest). And the fact that modern scholars do not even mention this indicates some sort of cover-up. Sounds serious, right? Here's Gwynne unearthing new information, he has a source and everything! Sure, until you care to check out who William Cobbett actually was. In spite of having written something called _"History of the Protestant Reformation",_ William Cobbet was a pamphleteer - _not_ an historian. What he wrote was _propaganda._ A minor detail that Gwynne didn't think worthy of mentioning. Again, real fun to read, but only as romanticised historical fiction.
What so are you going to stay
