When I bought my 1979 BMW R80/7 from craigslist, I paid $2400 cash, but what if I told you, you could quickly make back more than half that money, more than $1600 in fact, and reduce the cost of your donor motorcycle to about $800? Would it make t...

Siebenrock is 'seven skirt' tho?
Please don't add ANY music, especially this repetitive computer-generated stuff. It seriously detracts from what would otherwise be a very good video.
holy crap this is some hight quality content
Thank you 🙏
Do you get a new dipstick with the extension? If you only add .75 liter to the total extra volume of the extension (1.3 l), how do you measure it?
this video was incredibly satisfying..
I love the original aesthetic, but then again, I could use an original instrument cluster for my R100R, I think it's also a popular donor model.
Did your centerstand work with the Siebenrock oil pan extender? I've heard that some bikes will have some clearance issues.
Haven’t got that far yet. Put the build on hold but starting up again soon.
You chose too good of a bike. Abomination
I know, I know. It’s sad to some degree. I’ll do a true renovation on another bike at some point.
Marcus, what did you use to block the crank in place while you installed the rear main seal, etc?
I bought a tool on cyckeworx. I think there is a link in the description.
When you get to my age you'll regret doing that to such a historical piece of motorcycling history. Nostalgia gets a lot worse in your 60's...LOL. The plus side is that maybe the parts you sold were used to preserve other historical gems
I totally get you. This bike is a bit of a mongrel already so I’m ok taking it apart. At some point I’ll do a true renovation project.
where is the pt2 for the engine build?
I keep asking myself the same thing. I need time to edit. Kids and work.
Ive had a 79 R45 for 34 years i bought it for £75 as a none runner, it had an exhaust thread repaired but hadn't been reassembled, it was stuffed in the back of a carport with blue paint poured over the tank, i recommissioned it into a runner for £200 but it was so slow i decided to put a R100 engine in it , well that livened her up! I've done 300,000 miles on her, been to dozens of bike rallies, toured the alps , had numerous crashes, what a brilliant motorbike, a lifetime companion, she looks like a pile of junk but everything works, I'll never sell her
Hey, great videos! Do you plan to go on with them?
I do. I’m sorry it’s taking so long.
Love the videos …. But what happened? Where’s the rest?
They’re filmed. Just need to find time to edit them. Sorry for the delay.
So there goes another classic mechine and here's another abortion 😢
Very interesting history of eqch design, the prototyping was fun to follow, great video mate : )
Thanks pal
where is the rest of the build? :)
Working on it. Sorry it’s taking so long
i installed one on my R100Rt mono , and it gave me nothing but problems with oil leaking , even though i tried numerous fresh gaskets and correct torques , checked its level on a piece of glass and it wasn't true , ended up removing it , had no problems running without a oil cooler due to there no longer being a fairing so engine is truly air cooled , other than that i purchased another seibenrock product , piston and barrel kit and that is perfect , maybe i just got a dodgy sump extender , but its a lot of hassle , keep taking it on and off checking for leaks etc
Do you not need to change the cam with these?
How’s the build coming along?
Slowly. I need to find more time for this.
Too bad you stopped making these videos. They were super helpful. 😢
Thanks for the encouragement Christopher. I’m thinking of starting back up again.
@@montmoto Please do. Love your chill and friendly but no-nonsense style.
Nice video! I'm getting ready to put the seibenrock 1000cc up grade on mine and a larger oil pan..😊
It’s going to be epic. Take pics!!!
@@montmoto i opted not to add the larger oil pan. I need to move my center stand apparently and I'm not overly sold on .5 liters making a huge difference. I did remove the pan and clean everything before running any oil through the new pistons. I got them installed yesterday. Now on to rebuilding the carbs. Thanks again for the video.
just found your channel, nice stuff! am into same stuff and have just found myself a 74 r80 cafe racer that needs some tlc... your info is super useful and good, thanks for sharing Marcus (Phil, UK)
Thanks buddy. Good look with the build. Remember, it’s easy to take them apart. It’s putting the back that’s hard. 🤣
HIya. thanks for the awesome quality vid......I hope in the future it's even more detailed......ie. there is a lack of vid's on thrust washers and how it affects end play and potential damage to the engine when installed incorrectly......as I'm finding out now : ( please consider any thing that might help but l love your attention to detail please share allllllll the attention to detail to help others like my self.........cheers chap
Working on it! Thanks for the encouragement and sorry for the delay. Life, kids and other hobbies got in the way. Planning to start up the video making machine next week.
Where'd you go?
Sorry buddy. Life got busy. Planning to start up the video making machine again next week.
Great video. I appreciate all the attention to detail.
Thanks Matt. Much appreciated.
It is a good idea to lockwire the bolts that hold on the oil pick-up. If the oil pick-up drops off then your engine will be sucking up air even though you have a sump full of oil with catastrophic consequences. I like the look of your oil pan extender but I simply used an '81 spec sump on my R90/6 instead which also gives increased oil capacity. I did have to modify the centre stand to clear it though
Sounds like a sweet way to get extra oil without paying a lot. Good idea. Thanks for sharing.
Possibly one of the best BMW airhead engine build videos I have seen! Great job Marcus!
Thanks buddy. 👍🏻😀
Loving this! Great job!
Thanks so much!
Very informative. Great explanation of layers!
Glad it was helpful!
This very handy for a new potential airhead owner. My bike was a basket case that sat for 33 years. Bought it sight unseen, I knew I was going to pretty much do a restore or resurrection. Already had the bike to TX and back to MD. But great advice you are giving here!
I recently resurrected a '77 R100RS, always love learning how others travel down these similar roads. Looking forward to seeing the other videos you posted!
I have one of these (not a Seibenrock but the same basic doohickey) on my R100R. It's great - you can fit more oil, which is a plus and helps cool the bike. I also added a horizontal baffle (I can't remember the part number etc, sorry), which was recommended to me as a way to reduce the oil sloshing around in the more 'cavernous' sump and allowing air into the oil intake... Can't say if it makes any difference, but so far (10 years or so since rebuild) the engine is running perfectly...
Thanks for sharing. Sounds pretty cool. And glad it’s lasted you 10 years since the rebuild. Can’t really beat that. 😀
Yes the Seibenrock kit is well worth for bikes that no longer have OEM parts available especially old air heads, also you should get the heads reconditioned.
Heads are already done. Will do a video on them. 👍🏻😊👍🏻
this is obviously not realistic ebay selling, no one buys corbins for that much, and shocks sell for about 60 max for OEM used pair. maybe the bags and racks you could make that much on, but it depends on the time of year. the battery covers you can get new from eme or siebenrock for even or less than what you list as resale value. come on
Keeping me honest 😂. Thanks for watching and for the feedback. 👍🏻
Hiya is there a part 2,?
There is. It’s filmed. Just need to edit it. Coming soon. Promise.
Hi Should I plug the excess fuel drain at the bottom of the bmw r80 fuel tank?
I need a little more context here
Great job with you scooter love the black. I was also saddened by the general use of the American word cotter pin and it’s adoption by the uk to describe a spilt pin. All pins that are spilt and pass through a hole to prevent a nut coming loose are ‘split pins’ a cotter pin is totally different. Cotter pins are parallel pins with a taper machined along its length often with a smaller screwed shoulder they are used to hammer into a cross hole on a bearing housing to wedge against a small flat surface on a shaft preventing it from turning. Millions of bicycles across the world have cotter pins to prevent the pedals from slipping on the sprocket shaft, a nut is then screwed on to prevent the cotter pin from coming loose. Great idea using a tie grip to hold the rear brake on allowing the nut to be undone.
You learn something new every day. Thanks for sharing. You clearly know your stuff.
Excellent video Marcus! I’m new to your channel. I liked the R Ninety T but for me it lacked something so I’m in learning-mode to see what can be achieved using an older airhead bmw. Nicely pitched commentary and excellently lit photography. I realise I’m a bit behind so looking forward to catching up!
Thanks Endo. Super encouraging. Starting up again soon.
@@montmoto Looking forward to that Marcus!
Did a similar build restoration with a r90 off of eBay . Took 2 yrs and lots of $$$. Curious to know how much of a difference the power kit makes? Hp ? Good video
Hey mate, are you still going on the build? Did you stop making because lack of interest from YT?
Hey Max. Was a slow start for sure but these videos seem to be doing better now. Planning to start up again soon. Watch this space.
Got my r100rt from original owner with original papers and manual 30,000 miles .
Just found this channel. Great content. But. I want more ….
Welcome aboard! More coming.
@@montmoto :(
And lastly , only ever lovingly restore old R bikes to standard trim . Do not permanently wreck them by turning them into "cafe racers"
This fellow may be a skilled mechanic … but his decision to butcher that fine old bike shits !
Agreed
Thanks for this. I made the mistake a few years ago. Pined for a long time to buy an airhead, I went got a ‘build’ without seeing it personally. I went off of a video and pictures. When I received it, the Center stand pin was practically glued on. The battery was gel and not lithium as explained, and was being charged by a lithium charger. The fuel cap was fucked, EVERY seal was leaking and was only apparent after I had rod it a few miles. The head bold on each side was damaged in a way that it allowed oil to also gradually seep. Oh, and the clutch slipped. I made a £3k loss to a custom builder after I sold it on. NEVER again will I buy a bike without seeing.
Don't the R80's have the newer squire-ish head covers which started with the /7's?
Thanks mate!
No worries!
Hi mate, i have r 100rs, and r 80gs first generation, is it correct that i have to unbolt the rear schock to change the battery, seems 2 mm to big to get it out from above.’.what is the trick? Thx for helping out mate! Bob Belgium
Yes Bob, on an early R80g/s you will need to release the top shock mount and just move it aside a little
