I WAS HOPING TO FIND A GLEE REFRENCE

When "song choices" come into play during scoring, most of the weight is on the diversity of the music. They opened with an oldie by The Carpenters, made a lot of references to David Bowie and his Major Tom character, one of the songs which wasn't even written by Bowie, managed to throw in some Jack White and Marilyn Manson (show me another choir that can get away with singing Marilyn Manson's "This is the New Shit", a lot of T's made it in there instead of the intended, altered P consonants, especially during the Waukegan show). They incorporated some older previously unknown songs that are making recurrences on the charts "Sound of Silence" for example, an old classic was re-recorded in a heavier rock style this year for a video game commercial. Not to mention, ending with The Killer's "Spaceman" with that tempo and intensity alongside Jenna's solo was sublime. Anything Josh Green arranges, Moellenkamp directs, and April/Heather choreograph turns to gold... and whether someone likes this musical choice/diversity, it will score a perfect 10 on an adjudicators sheet during judging. As a true glee club, this would probably be a horrible song choice for a set and be immensely hard to arrange and then learn, not to mention the choreo, so I would recommend going with your instincts and choosing something else... ...but for a competitive Show Choir (especially one with 59 voices), this is exactly what competitions look for. Glee Club competitions (Glee Clubs can still compete in Show Choir comps, but usually around Tiers 3 or 4, maybe 5 if it's a very large comp) will look for differences in style of music on the score sheet, but Show Choir competitions will require a much more intricate set of music such as this (or their 2015 Prestige Set, or their 2014 Edward Scissorhand's set, or their 2013 Ever After set, 2012 Nightmare on Oz Street, 2011 Harry Potter, and 2010 and before show choir was much different and dominated mostly by Burbank's two comprehensive high schools but still worth looking at) to score well in that category. It will depend on the location as well, Southern California Show Choir is very dark and sometimes disturbing (on purpose, Powerhouse did "American Horror Story: Hotel California" as their set theme this year) while Midwestern choir's are much brighter even though we stole a lot of their technique, Southern Show Choir's such as Clinton's Attache are near unmatched in choreography and dance (Where do you think April James came from? Also for fun, look at the relationship of directors/staff/professionals at Sullivan High School in IL), and I don't know enough about Northeastern choirs to say enough about their style, though Burroughs has competed out there and faired well so it's still worth a look at their sets.
