    I personally work for the power company and a mega point that no one tells you is the amount of free time you give up. Call out percentages and mandatory or. Not that much fun if u are a very active person outside of work most power companies want to own u on ur free time. I'm not that old so my generation disagrees with it and where I work there's a big issue getting ppl on the property for call outs. There is more to life than living at work I suggest against it. Lots of chiefs here are divorced and miserable please find a work life balance and chase the money in different ways aka side construction business and work in a department other than overhead with less ot and no call out percentage. Depending on what barn u work out of too u can really beat ur body up if it's all back lot construction. Respectfully disagree. In my opinion, after being in the trade for almost 43 years, if you're serious about becoming a lineman, go sign the IBEW books in your area and start as a grunt. Earn and learn. I've been a Journeyman Lineman since 93, I've worked with guys that went to lineman schools, and guys that came up the way I did, and found that the practical knowledge gained working your way up, far exceeds anything you'll pay 5 figures for.

    • @GordonChandler1

      Sir, thank you for your input. I've been through line school, a whole non union apprenticeship, and then a union apprenticeship. I believe every way has their own pros and cons. No matter which way you decide to enter the trade. Looking back on it, I really don't know if I would have signed the books where I originally lived. Up here in the Northeast now, I definitely would have. Thank you for your comment, hopefully people read the comments and see all the options they have at their disposal.

    Hello Gordon, I just started as a groundsman at a non-union Utility. I’ve been told by other Class B/A lineman to join the union since I’m new and young, that I’d get better training, and that a journeyman card from a union is more recognized than the DOL apprenticeship. What are the steps to joining the union? I work at least 5-6 days a week and don’t have the time to visit the Local Unions. Would I be able to sign the books by just calling them? Would you mind dropping some tips? Thanks

    • @GordonChandler1
      @GordonChandler1 2 года назад

      No idea if you can call them and sign the books that way. Some probably have it set up where you can do it online. As far as looking for a place that is union. Sign the books. Look online for union contractors or cooperatives. Sign up with NEAT, ALBAT or whatever is in your area. Last tip would just be keep applying if it is what you really want to do. It doesn't take much, just effort on your part.

    We have folks coming in from India and China saying they are journeymen in my trade but it is a mechanical trade with safety record keeping and parts logging. They do need to begin, more or less over because the local blacksmith cannot make replacement parts for them, back together is not repaired. These are great folks with good educations, multi lingual, honorable folks but the cultures are different and also the expectations.
