Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness General MIDI Soundtrack (Roland Sound Canvas SC-88)

Roland Sound Canvas SC-88 recording of the Warcraft 2 General MIDI Sountrack, as provided by the MIDIs made available for download on Blizzard's website in 2000. A lot of the tracks were remixed and re-used for the Pet Battles music in World of Warcraft. Music composed by Glenn Stafford. Great composition! Specially the Orcs (Blizzard always favored the Horde). It's interesting to see that the ...
I think you were right to get an actual SC-88 Pro instead of an SC-8850 because even the SC-88 Pro map on the SC-8850 is not 100%.
Solid OST still in 2023
You got a link to these files? Or are these the same ones offered on karls it retro?
www.archive.org is your friend
Just went back to the SC-88 upload and remembered we had a fun conversation about this. Good stuff as always!
Great stuff, I love the Orc 2 theme :)
so good
Yes my Lord
sc88 would be getting more expensive since it is one of the legendary and historical computer music equiment.
Thank you!
I bought a Roland SC88 two years ago. Last week I finally got hold of a gameport-midi-cable for it. Now I just have to set up an old computer before I can enjoy these awesome tracks the way they were supposed to. 😁
There's not a lot to choose between this version and the CD audio. Amazing.
It's awesome to compare SC-55 and MU80.
Is there any reference guide available that lists what patches are used on the roland sc88 for these tracks?
nice video , orc 1 is such a masterpiece but sounds way better in the dos version
sebastiancr506 What do you mean by DOS version? Adlib/SoundBlaster?
@@jorgeblasio yeah i think it sounds better, this one is the one im talking about ruclips.net/video/VQH8VT4aTDs/видео.html
all of these tracks were recored as cd audio tracks on the game cdrom (mixed mode). what is the point spend 900 dollars to buy a sc-88 back in the day only to hear these tracks?
These devices weren’t used primarily to render video game audio, they were used to compose music.
Also it depends - OG release of Warcraft 2 used midi (it was still inside .mpq file just like everything else I think). Battle Net edition, as you said, had mastered wav files with mix of sc-55 and sc-88. So it depends what exact version we're taking about. Now you can use soft synth to mimic even sc-88, so only enthusiasts (don't like the word "geeks" in this context) would be going for actual hardware.
Hi, i have a question about the sc88 and maybe you can answer it. How can i use the Midi in B on the frontside? I know it is not used in the factory settings but i have no idea how to change this
Oh the hardware is ready from factory settings. Just that modern MIDI software developers don’t even know these devices can do 32 channels at once. You need a midi player that can assign more than one device.
@@jorgeblasio hmm yes i know but the thing is, you have a midi in a on the back and a midi in b on the back, those work just fine with whatever i plug into it, but the midi in b port on the front doesn't do anything for me. It says in the manual the midi in b port Front is not used with factory settings. I'm looking how to change that
Coinpusher Oh that. It’s in the manual. Page 135.
Thanks! Think i overlooked that. Also is there a download to this ost from the sound canvas, also tye midi files would be great

Glenn stafford is a bloody genius
I wish I could have one of those. Such glory.
Anotherordinaryguy 499 Save your money, they’re not going to disappear.
@@jorgeblasio I just notice Steve there wearing diamond armor.
Anotherordinaryguy 499 That’s correct, I love Minecraft
@@jorgeblasio Can you play the music of Minecraft into this machine?
Anotherordinaryguy 499 No; Minecraft’s Soundtrack was created in a Music Studio using digitally sampled instruments. The Warcraft one was made for the Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 using MIDI to instruct the Sound Module to render music using it’s digital samples.
Legendary game
intresting i have the exact same setup SC-88 + um-one interface... guess i was not the only one that wanted to keep it purely Roland based (though i did go with m-audio for my midi keyboard) Kinda wanna get those classic Roland speakers to at some point.. .they are nice :p
ZerqTM TBF, The Roland was the only MIDI-USB adapter the music store carried.
@@jorgeblasio best one you can get... i.ve had two and i've had driver issues both times... people who do midi hardware are not always reliable when it comes to drivers unless they are a major brand.. and roland is the biggest :)
ZerqTM I want the wireless Yamaha one
@@jorgeblasio cool did not know there where wireless midi interfaces... then again kinda obvious when you think about it... (i personally have everything by my computer so no point in wireless in my case :p) And so long as it's a major brand likely to actually support the product for some time to come in the future it should be good.
Dabu!
Dan Slotea Zug zug!
I'd crank up the reverb! it can go higher :p
ZerqTM Flat is the law
meh... i like more reverb and half the fun of owning a sound canvas is fucking around with the settings :p
Someone stated that they think that the soundtrack was recorded on an SC-88 in SC-55 map mode. Is there a way that you could at least do a sample with the first "Human 1" track and see how it compares with the CD-audio version? I know the SC-55 Pro was not even released at the time this game was released, so it definitely was not done with that. I thought it was done with SC-88, but certain instruments, such as the "bell" sound noticeably at a higher pitch in the CD-audio version than either the SC-88, SC-88 Pro. Also, my authentic SC-55 doesn't sound completely right either. I could give you a sample of that. (Though one problem is a polysnyth problem, which can be partially solved by recording the track in two halves and then combining them into one file later. But otherwise, it doesn't seem to sound as close as the SC-88 rendition.) (I suppose the other thing could be that the official midi verisons provided by Glenn Stafford were not exactly the same version as was recorded -- either changing velocities or other mixing, or some later enchancing was done for the CD version).
The module is in GS with SC-88 mapping. I've been having issues recording clear audio on my Linux setup. As soon as I figure it out I plan on doing an SC-55 recording and a Yamaha MU80. It's possible the MIDI and the CD versions don't match because of different mixing at the mastering studio. However, Glenn Stafford said the MIDI files came straight from him.
@@jorgeblasio from Glenn Stafford --- "The original equipment used to record the Warcraft II music was a Roland SC-55 layered with a Roland SC-88. I recall only certain sounds were doubled with SC-88 but not all. French Horns were doubled, and... probably some of the woodwinds too, and I’m guessing strings and choir too. I think Snare was better on SC-55 alone, maybe timp too, also reverse cymbal, and not entirely sure about the rest and would have to take it case by case."
Damn, this brings me back. My brother and I bought a MIDI synthesizer back in the day (don't remember the model) and I blasted it every time I played Warcraft II.
this sounds like peak general midi
One of the best soundtracks ever in videogame history. Even better than most of modern games. 2018 and still listening. Thanks Mr. Stafford for all the magic.
thank you
Where are Human 5 and Orc 5?
Jagged Alliance,fight for Metavira please!!!!!!!!!
Ahh, the memories. Best game of the series as well.
Tottaly, so great memories
How do you record audio from an SC-88pro?
Technomancer00 Roland modules have RCA out. You can use an RCA to mini jack cable and feed that into line input or you can use a regular RCA cable to feed into a USB audio interface/mixer
You're overthinking if you think that they used this synthesizer for Warcraft 2 music. I found that in Apple Computers there is a some kind of improved General MIDI sound (which was also created by Roland) and it sounds 100% exactly as it was in Warcraft WAV soundtrack. And this synthesizer is built-in Apple Computers since the beginning of the 16-bit sound. But maybe they've used some small piece of resampling of the drums.
Егор Чернопазов Read the description, it’s stated there near the end. BTW, Apple Computers also licensed the Roland SC-55 samples to use in their General MIDI implementation and apparently it was of higher quality than what Microsoft used on their General MIDI Windows implementation; but ultimately a software simulation.
Good to know! Roland SC-55 as most of Sound Canvas lineup are using Roland GS (for example SC-7 uses simple General MIDI), which is just better version of the General MIDI basis which is also sourced by Roland. Just wanna point that Microsoft didn't implement General MIDI. It was also Roland bank.
That is correct, Microsoft also got a very poorly sampled sound bank from Roland.
@@jorgeblasio Apple's Roland emulation is not much better tbh, sounds like total shite. I think Roland deliberately provided inferior quality banks and emulation to their licensees, because... well, they were making all these rather expensive Sound Canvases and in the end they certainly preferred to sell those to customers who wanted real quality.
No it doesn't. What you need is to play these files on the Yamaha MU80 and it sounds exactly like CD audio from the game.
warcraft 2 orcs have coolest music, warcraft 3 humans have coolest music.
And Jojo has the coolest mafiosos.
I have never heard introgm.mid song played in my Warcraft II Anyone know a fix or why?
Linosh Kurian Malayil It's the intro cinematic
Jorge Blasio Found it thank you
How to connect Canvas??
Милош Божовић Canvas --> USB MIDI interface like the Roland UM-One MK2 --> PC
your sound card works perfectly =P
"When my work is finished, I'm coming back for you!"
It doesn't get any better than this!
Fairly close. But with this game, there wasn't too much point in using the midi music as it has cd-audio tracks. :)
lyianx LAN parties. One CD key worked in up to 8 installations running at the same time
hey there - is it possible to plug a midi keyboard into this unit and then go rca out to a recording device?
Los Angeles Police Department Yes, that's its intended primary use
How do you play those MIDI sounds? Does this synthetizer take the MIDIs from the game directory? Or do you take MIDI files and play them with a MIDI player app?
I played them using a MIDI player program called QMIDI. I took the SMF midi files and added them onto a playlist. Most games had the original MIDIs encoded into the resource files of such games. In the case of Warcraft 2, the MIDI files are inside an MPQ resource file.
Holy crap this soundtrack sounds amazing on this thing, almost as if it were composed especially for it. Thanks for the upload.
ballandpaddle Roland Synthesizers were the de facto instruments used by game composers during the 90s. Although the game didn't specifically support Roland devices, they provide the closest sound to what the composer imagined.
It was.
would you recommend a good modern MIDI synthesizer ?
imkow What do you mean by modern? Like the Dreamblaster X2?
thank you. I mean the device should have been released in past couple of years...not too long ago. I'm reading about Dreamblaster X2, it looks like a bare board. is it like a USB sound card? or where to plug this card in?
imkow The Dreamblaster X2 is a MIDI module that can either be connected to an old ISA sound card with a waveblaster header OR it can be connected via USB to a modern computer. The X2 is a more realistic sounding MIDI module than the X1 was. Now, what do I recommend? I haven't tested a modern synth so I don't know how they play General MIDI. If you want a more realistic sound you could go for a modern synth but they start at 700 USD, and you could get similar results free by using a free General MIDI sound bank and a software synth like Fluidsynth or VirtualMIDISynth.
Thank you very much for advice...I see .and i have also researched a bit about modern MIDI synth ..nowadays synthesizers are likely made into a keyboard form like any of those digital piano..I would just want a PCI or PCIE or USB sound card.that can play MIDI music like real instruments...the setup like that seemingly can only be found in old sound cards or old devices shown in this video of yours.
Any modern sound card can play more "realistic" sounding MIDI files. Creative Labs and E-Mu Systems came up with a way to make their sound cards in the 90s sound better than by doing FM synthesis; they called it Sound Font. At the same time Interactive Audio Special Interest Group created the standard called DLS, which all modern operating systems support by default, with Windows and MacOS shipping with a stripped down version of the Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 DLS. What you need is a software synthesizer that supports SoundFonts. These are some that I know of: FluidSynth Timidity++ CoolMIDISynth These are players that can take MIDI info and play it back with a soundfont: WinAmp with MIDI enabled VLC 3 beta VanBasco Karaoke Player TMIDI TMIDI Player (Japanese) KbMediaPlayer
What about Beyond the Dark Portal?
I never played the expansion. I snooped around the files and found different MIDIs. You have to consider I downloaded the MIDIs from an archive of Blizzard's page from 2000. After the next video with the SC-55 I'll do the extra tracks. I just need Roland to hurry up and update the USB-MIDI interface drivers that broke with the latest macOS update.
Thank you!
I have to reconsider; the extraction program I used produced MIDIs that are different from the originals I recorded.
@@jorgeblasio so what happened?
Ale Rojas The MIDIs are corrupted by the extraction program
This video/recording is awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent, thank you! Now buy the SC-55 and do the same for a complete Roland Sound Canvas trio. You might want to add a timestamp to each song as in the SC-88 video. Are you aware of the Sound Canvas VA?
Yes I forgot to fix that. You want an SC-55 version too? That can be done.
Yeah but a real SC-55, not a Map on the SC-88/Pro. There are various differences in sound, and they are not even that subtle.
+James Freeman yup, real one
The SC-55 version would have been nice. It might be the best one too?
Yep I am currently using Sound Canvas VA as my midi synth... Great but not fully accurate
Plain old RCA to 1/8 line in jack
I'm looking into buying one of these but I'm wondering how you recorded the audio from it? I'll be making tunes using a midi keyboard and need a way of getting the sound into a DAW.
Thanks for the info! One more question, I did some more research and apparently the drivers don't work with anything above windows xp. Are you using windows xp with audacity? I have windows 8.1 and 10 but i'm willing to dual boot as linux or xp for this.
+Harrison Porteous I'm sorry I can't give much info on Windows, I use a Mac with Adobe Audition. Audacity works good for audio capture too. The problem with Windows is that since Vista Microsoft scrapped the MIDI chooser and it always defaults to the horrible Roland GS wavetable soft synth. There is a way to bring back the old functionality with a driver called Vista MIDI Tool. I am not completely sure but I think your DAW also has a MIDI mapper function.
Ok I understand now. I'm trying to find a way (before I buy a sound canvas) to playback my midi recordings from my pc. I would need a mini din to usb converter and a copy of windows 98-XP or linux running cakewalk because the drivers aren't updated anymore for direct connection. It's all getting complicated and was wondering if there was an easier way to playback midi from my PC to the sound canvas using my DAW. Will this SD-35 be the answer to my question?
+Harrison Porteous I've never seen a mini-DIN to USB adapter, I use a Roland UM-ONE mk2. I've heard the Yamaha is good too as is the M-Audio. Stay very far from the cheap no-brand cables, they are awful, missing notes all the time. You can use any MIDI player, I've used Van Basco's and then capture the audio from the line in on my Mac. There is another fantastic one but its in Japanese only.
+Jorge Blasio Ok thanks for your reply's. You can't connect the sound canvas to a PC at all if it's running any OS above xp, I have windows 8.1 and 10. Your a mac user so I wouldn't expect you to know how to help in this area but maybe you know of an external midi player or device that can grab midi from a DAW and playback using the sound canvas. I really like the unique sound of the sc-55 and sc-88, this is going to happen one way or the other haha.
Your welcome, enjoy. I'm thinking of making another video but with a Yamaha MU80. 😄
+Jorge Blasio Please do.
that would be cool! More midi awesomeness! though the sound canvas 88 is pretty freaking sweet (i own one too... i mean i own a M-audio 88... so makes sense i would pair it with a sound canvas 88... i mean they match lol X)
Oh, my gosh! thank you so much for the upload! I've never heard this glorious soundtrack on any Sound Canvas other than the SC-55! The SC-88 is one of my favorites! I find its sounds comparable to the CD tracks! I especially liked all the harpsichord sounds and the amount of chorus in them. Each Sound Canvas is amazing in its own way. Sadly the only MIDI device I have grown up hearing is the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, which is boring compared to any hardware synthesizer including the Sound Canvas. I plan on getting an SC-88Pro to get the best of all 3 classic Sound Canvas worlds.
+PDGamer2012 I've been looking for a decently priced SC-88 Pro for a while. I've seen the SC-8820 and SC-8850, though but haven't found much info about them.
Thank you for the info. I'll keep looking for the SC-88 Pro then. It's been my experience that the more modern the Roland devices get, the quality of the legacy modes suffer.
Jorge Blasio There are a fair number of SC-88PRO's on Ebay, and the cheapest I have seen them get is $190. I've seen one complete with its original manual, box, and some floppies (In 1997, really?) for like $250. I've actually asked my dad for an SC-88PRO for Christmas. It would be fun to have. I've seen something called the Mobile Studio Canvas SD-50. It's a modern Roland device that has not just MIDI, but also MP3 and other playback. For MIDI, it has GM2 and GS. The INTEGRA-7 is much more of a module, though. They both seem to have insanely realistic and modern sounds, but I still prefer things in the SC-55-SC-88PRO because I'm so oldschool.
***** I don't know that many of the SC-88PRO sounds because there simply aren't that many videos showing off the SC-88PRO playing MIDI sequences from games I like. The SC-55 and SC-88 seem way more popular. One thing I plan to do is show off the full version of Grabbag with the SC-55 map, SC-88 map, and native SC-88PRO map with both the GM and GS versions of the sequence because NOBODY HAS VIDEOS ON THAT SONG THAT SHOW THAT MANY DETAILS! Nobody ever demonstrates it on an SC-55 or SC-88PRO. They mainly use the SC-88 for it because that's what it was composed on. I would be benefitting the RUclips community by giving that comparison since nobody ever even thinks to do it.
+Sam Wittsell I know very few examples of software using the SC-88 Pro to its fullest. If you want to be blown away, search for the Konami Kukeiha Club MIDI Power floppies. They contain MIDIs for playback on SC-88 Pro in dual mode.
