I dont know much about this, so they can negatively impact a wetland and all they have to do is pay for it? Dont they have to replace/offset any wetland they destroy?
They must pay for the impacts, which are offset by a mitigation bank that will never be developed. Creating a no net wetland loss.

Great info!. How long this process usually takes?
It takes Approx 5+ years to get a Federal Permit with the USACE, Lengthy process!!! State permit takes approx 2 years.
What do you mean a mitigation bank is for sale???? How does that work?
I apologize for not seeing this comment until today…Purchasing a mitigation bank includes the land & the permit with the mitigation credit assets. Ex 1000 acres and 200 credits. Purchasing a mitigation bank is approx 30 cents on the dollar for evaluation of present day value. Great investment!

$70k for 1 acre, FML ..... There is no way those lands in middle of florida can cost that much.
The wetlands are an environmental jewel, and it costs a lot if a wetland needs to be impacted.
Let's see,,, If Im in need of Mitigation credits, do I listen to Vlad (RUclipsr)? Or Victoria the UCF 🎓 who is the go to person if I need to get something done and has made a nice career for herself while employing many? Look at how nice her desk chair is! She obviously knows what she's doing.

Mitigation banks, seens to be done for collecting $ for environmental agencies more than to protect the developing to good farming & fruit trees needed for feeding the people & converting from not to productivity to more productivity one whail at same time you don’t do damage to land. Also mitigation banks are for rich developers corporation not for medium or low income persons, but we iqualy have to pay taxes but not been able to develop our land
Thank you for this video. I've been a successful permaculture farmer for a while. After I spent 20 years as an engineer, I "retired" into my passion. I specialize in edible native species. This has made me rather interested in getting into ecological restoration as a profession. What holds me back, is the job market. It seems(I live in Texas) that the U.S. does not have a robust ecological economy. How can I score good restoration jobs, without having to move all over the place all the time(I have sick parents that need care)?

What a scam! Lets call it wetlands to protect whatever and say your not allowed to nothing on this property, however, we can sell you some credits on our protected lands at a heart stopping cost and you can then tear it apart if you want to! Only in America! Money, money, money! $72,000 an acre on top of buying the land?! Only an insane moron would do such a thing.

@preventive strike: Wetland Mitigation is expensive! And that's a good thing, because it makes the landowner think twice to move forward with any adverse wetland impact, thus avoiding and minimizing the impact. Wetland Mitigation Banking occurs on large parcels of land that could be developed, but instead, the landowner decides to preserve the land, and put a conservation easement on the land to prohibit any development for perpetuity. In exchange for the preservation and restoration activities that are outlined in the State and Federal Permits, the mitigation bank is awarded credits to be able to sell to other landowners within the same watershed to mitigate the loss resulting in a no-wetland loss with equivalent or better ecologically benefits.

They aren't replacing them...they are creating new wetlands from previously damaged land.

@@demur4840 You can't just replace a create a wetland and expect it to have the same value as the natural one. It's justifying draining wetlands meaning more get drained than would otherwise. Net loss.
Owen, I understand your concerns. However, Wetland Mitigation provides equal or greater ecological value of the impact by obtaining permits from the State and Federal agencies to authorize the wetland offset. Large tracks of land that consist of wildlife, trees and water create a corridor with other protected lands. Depending on the quality of the wetland being impacted will determine how much mitigation is needed. Hence, 1 acre of wetland impact can result in approx 10 acres of restored and protected land within the same watershed.
What scoring system is the soil scientist referring to near the end of the video?

Do all wetlands soils tend to have a very high clay content? Is that why its a sticky type of soil?
Hey Anthony! The hydric soil indicators are muck, mucky texture, grey colors, and sulfidic odor. Clay soils are dark in color, usually brownish gray or black, but sometimes dark red. Large amounts of water (e.g., rain storm or snow melt) pond on these soils because of their high clay content.
