Taking the big block to the machine shop cost (its not good news)
That compcam stuff fresh from china
A lot of the stuff we purchased is str8 from China, they just rebrand it once it
Looks good. Makes me remember working on my own gen V
looking good
That build is looking real fine. Can't wait to hear that Honey come to life. Great Job!!
Its coming along well 🙌🏾
Are you going to fire it up on a stand before you drop it in your truck? That would be a cool vid.
Not for this motor. But your right, that would be a cool vid
That's a Great looking Camshaft. A shame its hidden doing its job making the High HorsePower. Good Luck Bro.
Already subbed and thumbed. Can't wait to see that beast together. Good video EJ. Now on with the build.
Wish this was my hobby and I get to open and install all these great pieces of a powerful engine. Lets see that engine roar EJ!!!
So my machinist called me here's my cost so far. Machine work $1496. That's cleaning and magnafluxing the block, boring and honing to .060 over, decking the block to as close to zero as possible, line honing with machine shop sourced ARP 2 bolt main studs, New cam bearings installed with new freeze plugs machine shop supplied, and balance of rotating assembly that I supplied. Cost of rotating assembly $3000. That's an international balance forged scat stroker crankshaft, forged Callies compstar H beam connecting rods 6.385 designed with clearance for stroker crank, Ross racing forged pistons for 6.385 rods, King xp coated narrow rod and main bearings and premium piston rings. $4500 at this point and still need more parts like cam and lifters going solid roller, harmonic damper going fluid damper, flywheel for std trans, head work gonna need roller springs and valve seals already have performer rpm heads low hours. It adds up and it's gonna need more.
I built my 504.5 with a 4.375 crank and 30 over pistons remember displacement rules
Thaw price included the parts or just the work ?
Just the work 😬
@EJonDaPedal damn , you might wanna try another shop next time. That is Almost double what it should cost.
What’s it going in?
94 silverado
It would be a good nitrous motor
Just subscribed, in process of building a 512 from a Gen 4 454 V - 8.
That's gonna be a nice build
Do you know if the rear main seal from a Gen -5, (one-piece seal), will work on my Gen 4 crank ? Thanks in advance
@keithscudder7136 I don't think it will fit. Read somewhere that u would have to get a gen v oil pan and timing cover but I don't think the pan bolts line up. Also heard something about machining.
Thanks plenty on getting back to me. With all that, I'll stick with a 2-piece seal then. I also plan on having the block magnafluxed and was just curious, what if they find a crack in one of the cylinders ? Does that mean Boat-anchor for sure ? Thanks for your 2.5 cents ! (my keyboard is missing the (cent) sign ).
@keithscudder7136 If it has a crack it could be sleeved but that's gonna cost more and gotta find a shop willing to do it. Hopefully it's not cracked
1950$ I got u next time
Good build i'm doing a similar one on a c10!!. Much respect for going with the big block 💪
No matter what you do the price to have a great engine just creeps up higher and higher. Looks great. We just finished a 489. That motor will be a beast.
have them bord for 502 cid 😅😅
Did ya get it together? Make sure you have the rod small ends sized for proper pin fit, last few sets I’ve done were too tight out of the box. I’m putting together a 496 flat top build right now topping it off with an 8-71 blower. The AFR ENforcer 335 heads are real good value and plenty of flow for a hot street big block, especially with a little boost, you don’t need CNC ports at this level. Big blocks are kings!
I haven't put it together yet. Those r the heads I'm thinking bout getting. Thanks for the good info!
Not going to make much power with a flat top piston. Seen to many 454 built with a flat top piston and 781 heads and they swear it makes 600hp.
I know. I got the block built for a power adder
How did it ride😊
I haven't put the motor back in the truck. I'm still building it
How much did those parts come up 2?
The wood I already had. But it was $71. The parts r in the description
You said you were going to do it, great job Lil bro
Thank u!
Thats gonna make you a real nice engine! Machine work and balancing rotating assembly is pricey! I have a 555ci bigblock so i know how much it can cost. A good set of heads and intake etc. I think 550hp N.A. shouldn't be a problem for you. Good luck with the build.
Rotella T6 is an excellent oil and a lot of the trucking companies use it. It’s full synthetic too. 15w-40 should work well in Texas. Should quieted down the engine on start up. Great job you know your stuff! Solid!💪
Nice work! Looks like the machine shop did a great job cleaning that block up and getting everything installed. It really came up good. What main caps did you end up using and what carb/intake runner/cylinder heads will you use?
There stock main caps with arp studs. I want to do efi but not to sure. Cylinder heads I'm gonna go with brodix or AFR.
So how much horsepower are you shooting for and what car ?
With boost 700+. 94 silverado
You got it right.
I am giving you a like and subscribing for keeping it real and not editing out the struggle. Plus it's cold and wet and you are out there putting in work.
Thank you!
The two different icon pistons are different material fhr are made of 4032 and use 5/64 5/64 3/16 rings. And the high end icons are 2618 material and use 1/16 1/16 3/16 rings. They are decent pistons I upgrade the pins for boost though. Nice build
Thats good to know. If I use the pistons again in another build I'll make sure to upgrade the pins
@@EJonDaPedal the last set I used TREND .205 wall tool steel pins
Throw a high quality micrometer on that crank. You'll be surprised. Rods too
Those newer blocks usually won't go .100 over anyway. Walls aren't thick enough. .060 and 496 is plenty
That's good to know! Thanks
Even some of the old blocks have too much core shift. Back in the day we always did a half fill in the water jacket on the.100” over blocks.
Very nice truck!! That thing will pull like a locomotive!
4k for machine work alone? or with parts? Times have changed.
Just machine work 😬
Dam that is a lot of money just for machine work
@@EJonDaPedal I feel ya Brother, My machine shop took 3300 of my hard earned sheckles to build a solid 5.7,
@@Artoconnell yeah BBs are not cheap. but they are almost bullitproof. youd have to hit it with quite a bit of boost to break em
@@KingJT80 Been the GO TO engine block for 50 years now.
That's insane! I'd be machine shop shopping.
Was 4, 000 just for machining and putting it together or is that with parts?
Its wothout parts 😬
You're going to have problems. Unless you're prepared to spend another 5k at least on somebody else doing all the work including assembly, meaning a professional shop.
bro you need to learn how to assemble the bottom end and that would save big dollars but its a nice piece hope it works out well for you
496 IS A GREAT ENGINE . I PUT SOME DART HEADS ON MY 496 I'M VERY HAPPY WITH IT
Good to see my lil bro grinding. One of the smartest young men I know, keep up the great work.
Thank you for the encouragement!
Nice
I would of used the original crank and rods probably has a forged crank from the factory and had the minimum machine work done. Cleaned and inspected then if possible just bore it for new pistons. But you need to pick your cylinder head first so you know the cc of the combination chambers so you know what pistons will give you the compression your looking for. Ideally 10:1 for a street engine if you plan on running pump fuel.
I wanted a bigger displacement and wanted the motor built to handle 1200 hp. I'm also going to add boost so need lower compression
I've been considering building a 489 stroker for my 85 C30 dually, but lately I've been leaning more towards a basic rebuild and making it a 460. For one I'm not too confident about the auto parts store guy's claim that the reman 400 transmission I bought for this truck is good for 500 horses. Another thing is knowing me it would be a low compression engine when all is said and done anyway just so I'm not having to run high octane pump gas at all, even if it's dragging a 10,000 pound trailer down the road.
I'd go with a 489 but a 460 will still be good! Hopefully the transmission will hold up for u.
Flat top pistons won't make 600 plus HP with out a turbo or a supper charger/blower do some research before wasting $ lol
I know, that's why I built the block to add boost
i have a few of the 450 hp 454 they have a steel crank heavy rods high flow heads with the 02xx 400 r turbo trans which is good to 800 hp stock the trans comes with the heavy duty 8 bolt pump heavy clutches and stage one shift kit from factory . the best part is i get them for free out of the last 4 i got they had 6,000 to 58,000 miles on them . the engine just need to breath a good intake and a 850 holley and it comes live the trans is perfect for a street rig nothing needed for it . i put one in my 68 chevy pu that i been building and it drives sweet lots of power and it has 10.5 to 1 compression perfect for the street . plus i get a desert cool radiator twin electric pusher fans full set of coolers oil, trans, power steering and the full set of lines with a serpentine belt setup. so i end up saving tons of money on a build plus i got a set of leather bucket full movement electric heated seats for 25 bucks each that came out of a wrecked land rover then i put a 70 blazer center console that i got for free . right now i only have 2000 in my 68 and still have a fresh 327 with 400 turbo that came with the truck . all that i have left to do is finish the interior doors and final paint the rest of it is dun
That sounds like an awesome truck. Thanks for the good info
@@EJonDaPedal u can get the 02xx 400r turbo out of trucks and motorhomes on the case bell housing it will have 02xx welded on it that is when u know u got one they are perfect for a street car plus they are cheap to build up to 2000 hp trans .GM calls them a strip or heavy application transmission
@jeffrey4547 Thanks, that good to know. It came with a turbo 400 but I'm gonna put a 4l80 behind it
@@EJonDaPedal if u put a bunch of money in it but sorry to say if u run it hard it will not last as long as a 02xx trans not even close to it every metric trans are weak as hell
@jeffrey4547 oh gotcha. That's a good point
That's a lot of good information. I'm building a 488 right now. Thanks for the video
Glad to help
Cool.
Is the motor running yet ? Curious to know the dyno ??
Not yet
Well done my good friend.
Thank u
