Travel Advice Given by a Lakota Elder - Pine Ridge Reservation - Oglala
This encounter and conversation changed the trajectory of my life. My girlfriend at the time (who was filming) and I were just days in to our six week "Great American Road Trip" when an Oglala Lakota family took us in for the night on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Until that moment I believed a traveling companion was a necessity. After this night, I came to realize that not only was solo travel an option, it was actually the necessity. We would depart here the next morning after being fed an amazing breakfast, and continue westward towards my father for my birthday in seven days. I would not know until four days later that during that breakfast on the reservation, my father would die sudde...

Very cool Chris, I'm in Cody and currently reading your book. Absolutely outstanding! I'll definitely come by Silvergate. Thank you!
We just recently had the opportunity to do this beautiful drive. Thanks for this video that I can share with my friends!

One of my most favorite places indeed...never gets old to me.
You've got microphone touching noise. Your video is perfect, your sound when no microphone noise is perfect. Love the location. I'm going to try to listen (I listen for hours a day only to nature sound videos) bummer the mic noise is irritating. Looking forward to more WV videos with clean sound. Great effort don't stop. Thanks very much.
loooks like an impressionist painting
High clearance is helpful in these situations...more so than 4wd.
Thank you for posting! Hope to make this drive soon!
Happy you enjoyed it! You definitely should. There are quite a few amazing drives in the Black Hills.

I’m so glad you had this experience. What a cool thing, and 2007! When we were young.
Yeah, this was the catalyst behind my future sojourns. You're right, though - looking at this and seeing my 14 year old self makes it difficult for me to deny that I hit the big 3-0 this summer.
Nice video my friend 👍👍🔥💯🫵✅
Thank you so much!
잘봤어요 😀👍
Excellent 👍
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I try to put up a new drive each week. Be sure to subscribe!
@@nowrongturns I already subscribed 😊
@@mikioni Awesome. I'll try to keep you coming back. Tomorrow will be a dirt road in West Virginia passing through a few ghost towns before arriving at my camp on a ghost town. It's really beautiful country.
@@nowrongturns thanks👍
Terrific video. The southern coast is beautiful and my heart always has a longing to be there whenever I can. The video quality, music choices, and time of day make for an epic video to put on whenever I have the blues.
I'm happy you enjoyed it! The South Coast is my Shangri-La when it comes to Oregon. There and the Northern Rockies are my favorite areas of the US. I'm glad you enjoyed the music as I hadn't received any feedback on that aspect yet, and I wasn't sure if that was worth the time I spend finding willing artists as well as putting these soundtracks together. Above all, thank you for taking the time out of your day to leave feedback.
The Beartooth Highway is gorgeous and in the fall is my favorite. Would have been nice to see the views from the scenic pullouts also rather than just the pavement zipping by. Nice video anyway.
Thanks for watching! I'm in agreement about the Fall. I'm always there around mid-October and love when I can get a little snow during my time as well.
Thank a lot for your input ! I will add it to our 2024 Tour ! Greetings from Germany !
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy your 2024 Tour and I hope I make it to Germany some day!
Nice scenery. I would suggest you raise the camera a little higher so the pavement does not distract the gorgeous view.
I appreciate the suggestion. The pavement is meant to be part of the view as a POV angle video. GoPros have their limitations and drawbacks as well in regard to angle, lens size, aperture, and just having a balanced exposure with shadows and highlights. I could crop the video in post, but I would lose width as well, to having crop out the scenery to the sides of the road. If I angle the camera higher, the majority of frame will be sky. I hear ya loud and clear, though. I wish a lot of things in my videos could be better. Stay tuned, though. Always aiming to improve.
Thanks for sharing..i remember my time 2015 i drove this way too. It is Amazing. I hope i can come back sometimes from Germany to Visit Montana and Wyoming with my Wife. In my next life will be Born in Montana. Hope so
I'm happy you enjoyed it. You're right - it is an amazing area and road. You definitely need to bring the wife through Wyoming and Montana. It's such amazing land. If I ever get to visit Germany, what is the most beautiful area of land I should visit?
@@nowrongturns If you come to Germany, Hamburg, the fish market in Hamburg, the miniature worlds is a must, the Brocken in Saxony Anhalt, only looks bad because of the dead trees from the bark beetle. The national park will certainly need many years to recover. The Black Forest is beautiful. The islands on the North Sea coast, the heather blossom in August and September, Bavaria, Oktoberfest in Munich at the end of September at the beginning of October, Harzstädchen Goslar and Werningerode on April 30, Walburgisnacht, Braunschweig Castle Dankwardeode/ story of Heinrich the Lion. But you can't compare Germany with North America.
I like traveling, seeing the great country of ours, but I will stay in TEXAS !.Mainly because this State has The Greatest concern for us Vets..
Thanks so much! I really am going to keep those places in mind. I pasted your reply onto my wish list. Through my dozen or so summers of traveling I have definitely learned how much the Germans love touring America. It is a shame that so few Americans don't explore their own backyard, but I've had so many great experiences with travelers from abroad here in America.
That is a paraglider not a BASE jumper
Still liked it, what dashcam is that? 👍
@@Crunchywieners Thanks! It's actually a GoPro on a suction mount on top of the car. The guys who were jumping said they were base jumping. They told me "BASE" was buildings, antenna, spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs). Said it was a pretty popular spot for jumpers.
I would love to drive the roads you have been on with TR-4
Like the Triumph? I would also! I think there's less than a thousand still around.
another good drive
Thanks, Bill! There really are some great drives throughout the Black Hills. I've got a few more you'll hopefully enjoy as well. Can't wait to hear from you when you make these drives.
@@nowrongturns Hope to next year, Thanks
On the list for next year Thanks
Definitely! Iron Mountain and the Needles Highway are a definite must if you're in the Black Hills. I'll be putting some more Black Hills drives up over the next few weeks. Thanks for watching!
What kind of camera did you use? I'm heading this way next year and want to cover this road. Thanks
I used a GoPro with a GoPro suction cup mount on the top of my car just above the windshield. The mount is rated up to 150mph, I think. I've driven about 20k miles with it mounted and it's always been safe. If you're going to Yellowstone, definitely check out the Beartooth Highway also. My favorite roadway in America. Thanks for watching!
@@nowrongturns We drove from Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone in 2000. Such a scenic route all the way. Wish I can do it again. BTW, Great video.
@@Just_a_normal_guy11 It really is some amazing land full of amazing drives. I hope you do it again. It's worth it. I always come back a little better.
Wow! Not a bunch of red lights!
Yup! The only one you see was for road work. It's a two hour drive without even a stop sign.
You know what would be awesome? If you could add a map with the route you traveled on in the videos. That way I could plan it myself! Love it btw.
Done. It's in the intro. The Beartooth is the only road connecting Red Lodge and Cooke City. In the description you can also find directions to the highway.
Beautiful! 😊😊😊😊. Don't miss out = "PromoSM".

Beautiful! The ride and the music.
Thank you very much!
Nice. Next time, maybe some new age music? Something dreamy?
I could make an alternate video with such and see how it goes. If you haven't checked out my driving videos, all of the newer ones have music from Samuel Orson you might like. Let me know what you think.
Much success and many blessings to you brother 🙏
Thanks so much, Markus!

Thanks for watching! Hello from my current location in Buffalo Valley, Wyoming!
So beautiful, although at points I know it must have worried you. I miss California and I miss living in the West.
At points, indeed. I didn't want to lose my car - especially so early in my cross-country sojourn.
Such a gorgeous day… a little stressful at points, but a great day. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! It was definitely the best day I've ever had temperate wise in all my visits. Been a rough monsoon year for sure. Went through Flagstaff the day before and they really got it bad.
Great video! Loved it!
Thanks so much!
What an amazing drive! Taggart Lake Trail must be pretty legit--so many cars parked alongside the road at the trailhead!

Hey man I was lucky enough to chat with you at a stoplight on the Beartooth Highway on September 26th 2021. These videos are really cool. Any plans to publish the video from that day? Great to see your work.
Yes, absolutely! I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier. My dog passed a few weeks ago and I haven't touched my computer since. So great to hear you found me. As I probably told you, The Beartooth is my favorite road in America. I'll start working on getting that video together. Did we meet on the way to Cooke City or to Red Lodge?
@@nowrongturns Brutal man. Sorry to hear about your dog. I had a friend pass as well on 10/22. It's totally crushing. Still hurts. People and animals who love you unconditionally through the ups and downs in life and support you during hard times are devastating to lose. "Man's best friend" is a phrase for good reason. Everything else that once seemed important, once the loved one passes, seems to be trivial and insignificant in comparison. Anyways... on a lighter note, we met headed to Cooke City iirc.
@@NhsD43hj7HH Thanks. Your words are appreciated. We traveled together for 7 years. I asked about the direction so that I can render the video you would have been on. Who knows, you're probably in there somewhere, and it's a truer account of the conditions and lighting you would have had on your drive. It will take about 24-36 hours to render, and roughly 2 days for YT to process the 4K video. Hopefully by this weekend it will be up! Btw, were you in the white Ram?
Nice speedy views, like 1
