Vanakkam. Glad to know you preserved an old Veena. Many families have thrown away very good well made old instruments like Saraswati Veena, sitar etc because nobody in the current family plays or values them. As for swarasthanas, it does not depend on the pitch of the instrument. You can tune it to E or F or A - it does matter. What matters is the open strong tuning arrangement of the instrument. For eg.. Rudra Veena is tuned Sa Pa Sa ma from the lowest to highest. In this case, the first fret on the main ma string will be Prati ma. Saraswati Veena is tuned Pa Sa Pa Sa, so the main open string is Sa. In this case the first fret will be shuddha re (as called in carnatic music)/komal re(as called in hindustani music). Hope this helps and clarifies. Best wishes.

Thanks Kapish for your comments, glad you liked it. The pace of jhala is determined by the instrument and the individual's choice. There are no rules but in general, faster jhalas are more appropriate for sitar/sarod than Veena. The beauty of Veena lies in its slower paced movements.

Thank you for reaching out. Sitar may be an easier instrument to start with, its less demanding on the fingers and body than a Veena. Having said that, there are different difficulty levels at which sitar can be learnt and played. Also, since Indian classical music is heavily based on vocalisation, it may help to learn a little bit of vocal along with sitar. It all depends on how much time you can devote to learning and practicing. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

@@Chandraveena sure sir!🙏 It is very very very very unfortunate extremely unfortunate that the Indian classical heaven and this great instrument all lie somewhere in a dark corner of the internet with just a few hundred views. I want to work on this aspect. I think people have systematically kept it hidden because once if somebody gets into Indian classical then all the unimportant businesses which are many including bollywood will go bankrupt. They do not want it. We need people to propagate this music and I want to work for that.

Thanks Tim for your very kind and wonderful words. In my opinion, Desi and Desi Todi are two different Ragas. It is possible that they're often incorrectly inter changeably used.

@@Chandraveena I agree. According to my history here on RUclips, I have heard Desi before, by Vidushi N. Rajam on violin and by late Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on sitar. The Desi Todi was on sitar by Vidushi Mita Nag. I guess this must have been awhile ago, since I remember the Desi Todi but not the other recitals of Desi. I’ll have to listen to the other two Desi recordings again, especially Nikhil Banerjee’s, as a comparison to what you have done in dhrupad style.

I think it's a wonderful instrument. I've heard it, I've read the report on it's construction. The artist, Noor Zehra has put in lot of effort in making and playing the instrument.
