Gershwin - The Man I Love (arr. Earl Wild)
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲
One of the great transcriptions American pianist Earl Wild made of Gershwin's music. "The Man I love" was part of the 1924 score for the musical comedy Lady, Be Good. The song was deleted from that show and put into the Gershwins' 1927 government satire Strike Up the Band (where it appears as "The Man I Love" and "The Girl I Love"), which closed out-of-town.

Felix Mendelssohn - Rondo Capriccioso, Op.14 | Christiaan Kuyvenhoven, pianist
Просмотров 8532 года назад
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 The sparkling bravura piece was called an “Etude” in the first version of 1828. Two years later Mendelssohn wanted to present the work to the young piano virtuoso Delphine von Schauroth, whom he was courting at the time. He reworked it under the new title “Rondo capriccioso”, making it even more brilliant and adding a “moving introductory adagio” (thus described in a letter to F...

Schumann/Liszt - Widmung | Christiaan Kuyvenhoven, rehearsal @concertgebouw
Просмотров 2982 года назад
‘Dedication’ (Widmung) is a beautiful song by Robert Schumann, part of the song cycle Myrthen. He wrote it as a wedding gift for his wife Clara Wieck in 1840. Franz Liszt transcribed it as a very popular piano solo piece. After a long and acrimonious legal battle with her father, Schumann married Clara Wieck on 12 September 1840, the day before her 21st birthday. Had they waited another day, th...
STAND WITH UKRAINE 💙💛 - Beautiful song of grief & hope by Sergei Bortkiewicz - Elegie, Op.46

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 This Elegie by the Ukrainian composer Sergei Bortkiewicz (1877-1952) has been on my piano for the past few days. And I play it for a little boy I once met in Kiev, who showed me his big proud heart with a small act. As a teenager I went to Kiev for summer school. Dur...

Johannes Brahms - Intermezzo Op.117 No.2 | Christiaan Kuyvenhoven
Просмотров 4222 года назад
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 “Three lullabies to my sorrow” is how Brahms described his three Intermezzi Opus 117. Written in 1892, they are among his latest works and are filled with nostalgia. After writing a new intermezzo, he would send it to his dear friend Clara Schumann. Clara noted that “In these pieces I at last feel musical life stir once again in my soul.” The critic Eduard Hanslick described the...

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 Wim Statius Muller was a composer from Curaçao, best known for his Antillean Dances. He was highly influenced by the Waltzes and Mazurka's by Federic Chopin. I bet you've never heard this Liszt piece before, yet it is one of the most beautiful melodies you can imagine. ‘Faribolo Pastour’ is the first line of a poem by Jacques Jasmin on which Liszt based this piece. Liszt met Jasmin in 1844 when he was touring in Agen, France. Jasmin recited the poem for him om the beautiful melody he might have adapted from a folk song. Liszt improvised on the song ...

Claude Debussy's two Arabesques are early works of his, written between 188 and 1892. An arabesque is a type of music which uses melodies to create the atmosphere of Arabic architecture. For Debussy though, a musical arabesque is a line curved in accordance with nature, and with his music he mirrored the celebrations of shapes in nature made by the Art Nouveau artists of the time. Nicely played! By the way, is that d natural in bar 17 deliberate? All my versions continue the d sharp throughout the bar. I recognize that the previous bar has a spurious d sharp in the Bach Gesellschaft version, unlike the autographs.

Heavenly playing Christiaan. I found you today, and I 'discovered' Bortkiewicz earlier this year via his impressively melodic Piano Concerto 1. My kind of melodist - for sure there are nods to Rachmaninoff, and nothing wrong with that. But Bortkiewicz stretches out the harmonic progressions with stunning counterpoint, blissfully, and generates his own unmistakable yearning soundscapes. Would you consider presenting his Prelude op 33 number 8 - arguably the most gorgeous of tunes, at least to my ears. I love your tempo here - perfectly judged allowing you to bring out all the inner layering and melodic lines which are characteristic of this little-known composer. More similar posts please - when you have the time - and THANK YOU Christiaan.

Please do not call it the Bridgetower Sonata. That would be incredibly disrespectful to Beethoven, who composed the piece and gave its first performance, accompanied by Bridgetower. The dedication was up to him. And please take the story with a very large pinch of salt. Apart from the fact that Bridgetower and Beethoven played the piece together, and the "Sonata Mulattica.." inscription (which is nothing like a dedication) the rest is unconfirmed storytelling. Bridgetower's mother wasn't even German, She was Polish.
