mostly great lakes surfing using my soloshot3 camera. using footage for self review/analysis. hoping over time ill be able to go back and see improvements. at the very least its kinda neat to have a lil video log of my sessions.
not looking to build a huge following. dont think im a great surfer or anything haha always open to input, tips, constructive criticism, etc from other surfers.

2024.09.07 offshore lake michigan waves, midwest surfing
sheboygan wi 2-3ft N swell with NW wind, air temp was ~50°F & water temp ~71°F when i first paddled out, air went up and water dropped a little through the day. checked north side first cause i wanted to surf some rights, figured if it didnt look good id head over to blue harbor. lighting and water was amazing. really nice lines and sections. wind turned a little more N late morning and added some roughness to the faces but overall extremely good day!

north swell, surfed a little further south of where i usually do just cause how the waves were breaking. water was pretty warm and prob could have gone less than a 3/2 but wanted to stay warm with the blowing wind. surfed at blue harbor in the afternoon but skipped camera - water was really clear and really fun waves.

wasnt much in the forecast & storms early in the morning. was a little more size at dawn but it was pretty dark out and lightning. water was also pretty rough at the state park but after an hour or two things started cleaning up as the wind went WSW/offshore. almost passed on the day - figured i may as well go esp with warm water temp ~73°F. air temp was low 70s so i threw a longsleeve rashguar...

while the waves werent as organized as yesterday i was able to get out for a third day in a row. water around 72 °F with some cooler air around 55°F in the morning. threw the wetsuit on just to cover my arms but there was very little wind so i prob would have been fine in less. wasnt seeing much in the forecast so figured might as well make the most of whats out there!

had high hopes for this morning but was a bit of a let down. thick fog at dawn and could hardly see if anything was breaking out there. once i saw there were some rideable waves i headed out in a shorty and came back in within 30sec cause the water temp dropped so much. buoy 4 miles out was still reading in the 70s so must have just been along shore that it kicked up cold. my feet/legs were ach...

warm water in southeast wisconsin but rougher day with semi onshore wind. port had a bit more protection than sheboygan with some waves that had a bit more of a shoulder on em. went with my 6'6 migration skua to feel out turns more on, struggled with the wind on the rights. still a ton of fun!

middle of july so ill take whatever i can get on lake michigan. still had fun, just wanted to get back in the water. actually was able to get some short rides that i would consider surfing. was hoping it was going to be a little smoother on the faces but oh well. was the most size i was able to find in the area. figured id post this footage just to keep things real hah

@@renzyyy I live in the Mediterranean Sea, of course I have a low standard for having fun, yes here there are days comparable to the ocean, but you often have to settle. work, as always, is the biggest obstacle! thanks for the reply!

@@ahbwisurfnpaddle ya norths have been the most reliable here the past couple years now. lot of people go further south, there were a bunch of people that got out as it built during the day, i went a bit early to fit in with my work schedule heh

@@renzyyy Travel or don't, as long as you're having fun, never quit! I'm almost 69 and I surfed 16 hours in the past 8 days from Hurricane Ernesto. I'm sore as heck but I always was after surfing, even 50 years ago. But - back then, I surfed 16 hours in 2 or 3 days! haha I love to watch your vids, it's always amazing to me how frequent you're surfing Sheboygan and the Great Lakes.

Had the water warmed up any from a couple of days before? The outing on 8/16 sounds painfully cold.
yeah! it jumped back up a lot, was prob upper 60s and maybe 70s in spots. could feel pockets of warm and cold and was more noticeable when i first got out
Upwelling can be caused by strong, persistent offshore winds-in the case of Sheboygan, that would be be west or southwest winds-that blow the warm surface water out into Lake Michigan. The colder subsurface water then rises to the top, replacing the warm water. That's how we get water temps in the 50s in late Summer when air temps may be in the 90s

Great job, Aaron! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you surfing in the fog before! In the rain, yes. In the snow, yes. But never in the fog. Can you please explain what upwelling is? I can kind of picture what you might be talking about, but please inform me and anyone else who might be reading and wondering what upwelling is. Thanks!
I’ll take the liberty of fielding that question. Our local water temps have been low 70’s for the past few weeks. Down deep, say 50 feet or more, readings in the 40’s are found. Last Thursday night there was an upwelling of that cold water resulting in a 20 degree drop in surface temp. That’s a recipe for fog. Fortunately, a 2 day north swell has since brought the warm surface water back to our shores.
