Defending as an individual and in a group - Session 3
This came at the perfect timing. Had a game Saturday with my u16s where I was pulling my hair out. We always want to attack fast and play forward immediately end up losing possession so fast and conceding counters. Really trying to get them to understand the importance of winning the ball back and connecting 3/4 to calm the tempo and attack with more care
great stuff, we hope that this is helpful and it is something ou can repeat in training as well to help the players get used to this and manage the game. Let us know how you get on with it.
In theory you are correct however equal time is unfair on players who want to progress their game! These are players are committed to the team, they work on their ball mastery, they do extra training elsewhere to improve themselves, they always arrive on time and engage fully in the sessions the coach has created Vs little Johnny who disrupts training hasnt progressed because they don’t listen, they barely kick a ball outside the 1 hour a week and matchday time. Up until 11 aside I agree but to continue equal time beyond this just tells the players effort doesn’t matter because they’re always going to get a game regardless of attitude. From 11 aside I switch to fair time this is not ability based is about reward for effort and the right attitude and this is a life lesson to. If you want something you have to earn it.
I agree with you to an extent here Mark, as you have mentioned it is more important in the foundation phase but it can change once they reach 11 a side football. But I would also say it would still then depend on the club philosophy and context. If you are at a club that is about promoting football for all and purely participation then it should remain equal playing time. if you are at a club that is trying to develop players to their potential this may change. I would encourage though that under 13-16 they should get at least a half each, under 16-18 you would expect players to not sit on the bench the whole game. That is my opinion though. ISome clubs may choose not do equal playing time and if so the club should communicate this clearly to players before they sign up.
That was 1 tip
Harrison was my Kent FA tutor back in 2019 during the summer. I would love to reach out to him and thank him personally, for what he has taught us during out introduction to coaching course
Not sure why you would reward an attacker when your doing a defensive drill. He will now want to score more goals and not want to defend.
the main reason for this is to keep the standard of attacking high. So many times you see players in attacking drills just trying to nutmeg players or do things they wouldn't do in a game. This means the defenders don't get to practice as well as they arent facing realistic attacks. By raising the standard of the attacking this will make the defenders work harder, the defenders may not get as much success and it may be hard for them but this is where the coach has to help them develop their defensive qualities.
Great insights and stories, both Keith and Seb were heavily involved in my UEFA C sessions. Hope you’re both well.
Thouroughly enjoyed this hope everyone likes it please subscribe for more content
Did you mean for one more blue to be out there? You said 8v8 but blue only has 7.

Thanks for this
Possession Game + Counter Attack + Quick Counter + Long Ball + Out Wide = TOTAL FOOTBALL
TOTAL FOOTBALL + TOTAL SOCCER Anyone Are Can Be Able To Play As A Forward, Striker, Winger, Midfielder, And Defender.
What software do to you use. I like the session.
How big should the square be roughly? Defender needs a little assistance and to not be ran too ragged. Cheers
Hi Michael, i would go 5 yards by 5 yards if you have slightly older players 9+ and want quick turnovers of the ball, if you have players younger than that then probably 7yards by yards up to 10 yards by 10 yards depending on ability levels.
Good One Coach
Alexander-Arnold is brilliant at this
too complicated, im going to ball hog 😎😎😎
If there is a turnover of possession, do the blue and red teams transition to defensive and offensive play respectively, or is the play halted and replayed with the assigned teams restarting play?
If the other team win the ball they now have to try and play to the servers and then can attack by going wide first and then looking to score, everytime the play turns over the new team in possession must go to the target players first, this keeps the practice rolling and doesnt stop the play which the players wont like, hope that helps :)
Nice video
Thanks for your advise. What I've been looking for as a varsity coach is a step by step way to organize and train a team such as a HS team made up of anywhere from club to rec to walk ons from the student body. For ex. after preseason conditioning start with defense training for the first week, then move to offense, then break up offense into midfield and forward attacking unit training, etc. Just flat out plans and sequence from different coaches. There is nothing out here like that.
Spot on. Thanks
Nice

As a player i find it kind of annoying since i work very hard and train and play hard but some of my team mates get the same amount of playing time when they do much less work

What age groups do you consider as being 'younger players'?
I would say this is primary school aged children, once they reach teenage years you can start to look for more fun ways to build strength as part of your programmes.
@@TSCcoachesclubCheers mate, started coaching a U9 team this season and wasn't sure what age the cut off would be. Great advice btw

I’m a soccer player for blitz academy FC but I’m a 2014 and I think that goal 5 was the best

Good coaching, solid coaching points. Just one question....seems a lot of players standing around doing nothing. Was that for the video?
Apologies Neil, thought we had replied. This is what we call a master square. We had 6 groups working on the same topic across the pitch. They work for 6 minutes then come into the middle square for a demo, then go back to their own groups and carry on the practice in smaller numbers so they get more repetition.
