Hello, Thanks for good shielding details. I am installing my small wood burning stove (750 sqft capacity - US Stove Co) in my sunroom. It will be on the corner of big Pella windows. Manufacturer recommends 13” clearance from the sides of the stove. However, these are outside contact windows. I am worried about they are getting cracked with cold and hot heat differences. Is there any ballpark % addition to window clearance instead of wall clearance?

Anything this old, the heat exchanger must visually be inspected. Second, the reason they have a "higher heat output" is because back in those days everyone oversized furnaces. I see it all the time. Some 125,000btu furnace when the house needs 60,000. Can't make this stuff up.

Thank you so much for these videos! Your channel is the only one that is giving me actual answers. My install is in a manufactured home and requires that we have a fresh air intake pipe coming into the stove. Can I run the air intake pipe through the heat shield? Or should I run it through the hearth pad and sub floor and then out to to underpinning of the house.

Hello! My husband and I are making an offer on our first home. It's a real fixer-upper on a lot of land in the Ottawa area. The furnace needs to be replaced and I'm looking at a winter of fixing it with no heat. I am looking for temporary wood-burning heat options to supplement electric wall heat incase we get a very cold night or the power goes out. Long term I'd love to install a wood stove. What are your thoughts on temporary portable wood stoves, and running your chimney out a window?

Guess you never seen a house inspection report. Stuff like this gets noted in the report. This how the price of the house can be knocked down a bit for the buyer if they are willing to accept it. The mortgage company could care less about these kind of issues.

The widely used Air O Cell test only tests the air in a 3 foot circumference for on average 10 minutes. It is the least effective of all the testing methods yet the one most mold "inspectors" use. Plus you can take an Air O Cell sample of an area at three different times of the day and get 3 different results. It is NOT a reliable test of the air quality in a room and especially a building. It is meant to be an aid in an inspection and help the inspector determine if there is mold somewhere that is not visible. There are better ways to test the air quality in a building or home but they all have limitations and rely on the inspector doing the testing properly and according to industry standards, which in my opinion as a Certified Mold Inspector and licensed attorney, most do not do. Great video. Concise and informative. As you said, until the area is tested you can't say for certain if it is mold. It should be tested especially if there was a water intrusion event.

Thanks for the constructive critique. Im not sure where the 3' data comes from but I'd agree that it is only a tool and not a great one at that. To my understanding, the mold levels do fluctuate even from morning to afternoon and that is why proper recording of temperatures and humidity and outside conditions are important. I often say figures don't lie but liers figure. I've seen residential deals fall apart because a particular lab will report, "20x more mold inside a home than outside". That scares people but when the outside number is 12 spores per cubic meter and the inside is only 240 spores per cubic meter, that is still a very small number considering it is common to find up to 700 spores per square meter in outside air. I generally discourage air testing with my inspections. I say let me have a good look at the house and see if I'm concerned based upon my findings. Then if I find mold or smell odors, I tell the client to make sure they still want the house based upon the entire inspection before bringing me back to test the air. In many cases the client decides not to buy the home for a plethora of reasons. If I tried to sell them on air testing with my inspection I'd stand to make addition $$$, but that person would have wasted their money. I know a lot of inspectors are cashing in on air sampling as an added feature of their inspection but I for one will not be doing that. I hate it when people rip me off and I don't want to do it to my customers. Thanks again for your input. Happy when I get feed back of any kind. RUclips is simply my way to educate my customers in the things I feel I can help with the little knowledge I have to share.

  • @Iamthathillbilly

The way i see it, its been there all these years and doesnt seem to have moved, code as far as framing goes, is often massive overkill, since no engineer wants to sign off on the one that fell down. I wouldn't be worried about it at all if I was looking to buy the house.

I'm not a builder or trades person, but I like your videos. I find houses kind of fascinating for some unbeknownst reason. I feel like they have lots of stories to tell. My current home has had way more issues than what the home inspector found (same with my last house). Trouble shooting and fixing them has been an adventure, to say the least. I think I've got it mostly figured out, but there are things with my house that I wish I knew more about. The hallway drops an inch over a 3 foot span in one place, for example. And one room has an odour that just won't go away despite new paint and flooring.

Fire or mold treatment? There's no ventilation in the atic and plenty of insulation plus it looks like a heating flue pipe is installed which can cause the underside of the roof to heat up in the winter without ventiliation mold growth couldoccur.

Don't recall heating pipe. Very rare to have insulated ducts in attics in the midwest. You are right though, heat in the attic creates frost and potentially mold.

Coefficient of expansion and galvanic corrosion are the big issues with aluminum wiring. You don't have to have heavy loads to have problems. The biggest issue I found with aluminum wiring was using the push locks on outlets for feed-through. I know push locks have come a long way but I still feel more comfortable using the screw terminals for fastening wires.

I've been accused of that as well, but it's the furthest thing from the truth. Having said that, it is important not to become too friendly with realtors. The better you know the realtor, the more that relationship tends to weigh in on your comments about the home. Keep it honest and fair.
