How do you get to the Linux island? Any way you want!
Switching from Windows to Linux can be done in several ways, depending on your needs and comfort level. For those ready for a full switch, you can perform a clean installation of Linux Mint, completely replacing Windows on your device. Additionally, many Linux distributions (such as Ubuntu) offer user-friendly installers and a smooth transition process, including the option to automatically partition your disk and install essential drivers.

Should you use newer kernels in Linux Mint? Depends on your hardware.
Personally, I still use Windows from time to time, but I use Linux every day. And for that I used Windows To Go. There are many methods to do it, for example you can use Rufus. You can also use programs like WinToUSB, AOMEI Partition Assistant etc.
I didn't get on well with MX Linux. The lack of a software center was a point against it. And when I installed WINE and Winetricks so I could run some certain windows apps, it didn't work. this is the only ditsro I've tried where Winetricks just wouldn't run so that was a huge point against it. They run fine on other Distros, I've tried. Mint, Zorin, Ubuntu, even Fedora Workstation (my current favorite distro) Winetricks worked fine on them.
I have a huge problem, my usb is not even working to install linux! not to mention it has a digital copy of zorin os which is a dvd. The problem is I don't even have a dvd anyway that is physical. SO what can I possibly do???
For me I like to do things and find efficient way to do them. I like to collect statistics and turn them into usable data such as electricity consumption and such. Linux is much more friendly for creating things, you can do anything as long you thinker around for long enough. I still have dual boot with windows but that is only because when my students need help with theirs stuff it is easier to have reference to what they are using.
It's true that when you play around with it more and more, you find out more of what it can actually do.
Watching this from the Debian-based environment on my Chromebook. Nice to see another video from you.
So did you revamp the Chromebook??
I got onto the Linux island this past weekend. It feels so good getting away from that spyware windows! I customize Mint the way I want with far more freedom. I'm not ready to ditch windows, just taking my time making sure I can do what I want like I would on win10. Realistically, I think I'll just need to keep my dual boot setup just for certain tasks. But I hope I can ditch windows in the future. So far my latest accomplishments are using _sudo apt update_ and other basic commands from a video, and installing Star Citizen. Right now I'm tackling modding Armored Core 6, going for the Coop and Armory mods.
That's awesome, it's great that you're enjoying the island!
I had been itching to get off of Windows for a long time. I would try Linux every year or two and would use it for a month before having to go back to Windows. I just had to have everything I needed to be working before I could make the switch. Finally about 3 years ago I could be just as productive on Linux as on Windows, so I switched.
That's a place where many of us were from regarding linux
Is it just me, or is this background actually hard to look at?
It could be, I just like the colors.
Like the video. Steam OS is great for Linux adoption. As soon as it gets good enough that enterprising gamers realize they don't need Windows anymore, I hope that'll put the screws to Microsoft!
I think you'll see that more and more
I like Linux, but one issue that prevents it from being widely adopted as an OS for regular users is that a lot of things require a bit of effort to get working. For example I was trying to get a Bluetooth dongle working on some older laptops. Under Windows XP it was plug & play, while on Debian it required installing 3 packages and manually editing a config file.
hi! dont use debian :3 also, would the dongle still work on later versions of windows?
when was that? in my experience most peripherals are plugnplay
@@kerkywastaken Hi. Yes, the dongle works on W10 and identifies as "Generic Bluetooth Radio" without requiring any manufacturer specific drivers. As for Debian, I don't mind a bit of tinkering and searching online. But my parents for example would have a hard time.
@@tatianatub A couple of weeks ago and it was Debian 12. But it might have been due to the fact that the laptop in question didn't have built in BT, so the bluetooth stack wasn't installed per default. The BT manager also had to be installed manually.
Welcome back! I need windows for the work, but I've tried mint and liked it, although had some issues & wifi kept dropping no matter what I did. Recently tried Fedora and its been very stable and enjoying it so far.
That's basically what I'm using is a Fedora based distro. It's got a couple of weird things in it's installer like selecting disks and partitions, but once past that installing is easy. I have read they might be updating their installer with the next release to make things easier. The only other thing with Fedora is they don't have a lot of the "extra" stuff that you'll want installed to make it work - like Codecs and non-free repo's. But they're easy to install with a couple of commands. That's where some of the Fedora based disros help. I'm pretty happy with the Ultramarine KDE I'm running on a couple of PCs. If your son was using it for gaming it's most likely he was trying Nobara and that's it's own kettle of fish 😂. Much like yourself John, I'd been trying Linux on and off for the last 20yrs. But it's only been in the last couple of years that I thought the desktops were up to par and actually usable. BTW I did end up putting Linux Mint on a VM and played around with it for a couple of days. I managed to get a few things working but in the end still not for me 🤣. There's just some annoying things in it that I don't find when using KDE. So it may be I just don't get on with the Cinnamon DE.
I do like that KDE desktop, still my fave
I've hated Windows since the late 80s, but it was that or Apple if I wanted the combination of software and compatibility with hardware that I needed. Windows 7 was at last a version that I could reach an accommodation with, and Microsoft dumped that. After briefly experiencing the clutter and bloat of Windows 10 and Seven no longer being supported, I switched to Linux and will never go back.
Great insight, thanks for another video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video John, looking forward to seeing some feedback from your son. I have 22 USB drives with a different Linux distro on each one. My son asked me a couple days ago for the Zorin one, which he intends to install on his laptop to experiment with. He wanted to use Zorin because it's supposed to be very game-friendly. Personally, I've been running Mint for nearly 10 years, and currently have 26 Steam games installed that in some cases run better on Mint than they did in Windows.A second son added me as a Steam family member, giving me access to an additional 385 games to install if I wish. Some of those might not work in Mint, but I'm guessing a ton of them would. Checking ProtonDB will tell you which games are playable, and any launch options that might be required. The days of tweaking autoexec.bat and config.sys files to get a game working are just a distant memory.
Its been a while. Thanks for the vid.
I've been out on the island too long.

Hi John. I too - when forced to enter the Win environment - don't feel comfortable and coincidentally, feel like an alien inside of it! Did you leave MX Linux then? Some time back you seems to be drifting from LM to MX.
I have my drives with various versions. My main function daily is Linux mint. Like them all more or less.
This was a little unusual if I may say so myself. I don't think I've ever heard the idea about the government being 40 years ahead with certain technologies. Two unrelated questions I have for you are where did you pick up making RUclips videos and can you make some videos about that?
The most impressive stuff is largely unknown or classified.
i'm new here. i clicked on this video thinking LM was making a laptop. half way through, i completely forgot why i clicked because of the great story. miss going to the theater, feels like no one (that i know) goes anymore
It's a shame about movie theaters, so many movies don't get the same group reaction. It was something we all had in common at that moment. A primal fear and disgust.
@ agreed, and not just that, streaming is killing theaters
Screw Linux, that Alien story is the real treasure of this video.
Thanks. I've never experienced anything like that in a movie theater where people were voicing a prolonged horror with screams and wailing and moaning. Nothing before nor since that night way back when.
Hi John, have a look at 2001 a Space Odyssey there was a computer called HAL that went I think rogue.
Now HAL 9000 seems closer to today, I forgot all about that one! Thanks.
@johnishappy Have a very Happy New Year.
From the days when Dick Tracy showed us his wrist watch walkie-talkie mobile phone, Isaac Asimov and his Robbie, or even Aldous Huxley and his Brave New World, computing and telecommunication were always tied closely together as extensions of our presence in and domination of our own world, as well as others, to inspire us that we can do just about anything, as the future always seemed so wondrous, so inspiring and yet so distant from our current primitive daily grind. However, as computing became more miniaturized and more personal, we're also more inclined to to think of it as being more intrusive, more implanted into our own flesh and blood existence, not to mention, more controlling of our perception of reality and intellect. The latest AI incarnation comes across more like Arthur C. Clarke's HAL than George Lucas' C3PO in Star Wars. 40 years from now, bionic implants to allow a more visceral computing augmentation will be just as common as tattoos are today. 40 years from now, the definition of what a human is will more likely mention the absence of such implants than the unadulterated version of our genome.
Great comment! You bring up some excellent aspects about biology. The implants scare me.
@@johnishappy When the telegraph came along, more than a century and a half ago, it was 5 cents per word. The radio operator aboard the Titanic was frantically tapping away in Morse code S.O.S over 'the wireless', to summon any other ship close by for help, just before one and a half thousand of his passengers drowned in the nighttime still, freezing waters of the North Atlantic, back in April 1912. In 1948, Claude Shannon at Bell Labs gave the world 'the bit' to encode, store and relay digital information, so that when AT&T moved to electronic telephony, it became more like 10 cents per bit. We now know that it takes 16 calories of energy to store that binary bit. Personal computing and smart phones now got us all to thumb away things like 'LOL', 'BRB' and 'FOMO', while our younger generation have completely missed out on things like fax machines and 8-track magnetic tapes. 40 years from now, our descendants won't even know what on earth is a 'phone call', or a 'meme', as neural implants will have all humans' minds in a hive-like constant wireless connection with each other, being able to instantly broadcast telepathically, as they'll struggle to distinguish between their own thoughts and everyone else's.... if we can find a way to circumvent today's existential threats that would otherwise see us revert back to the Stone Age.
Hi John, I hope you're keeping well. I've also been contemplating buying a new laptop to replace one about 4yrs old. And only for the fact that I blew the USB-C port up on it (apparently plugging an external screen into the USB-C and also trying to charge your phone off that screen's USB ports isn't a great idea LOL). If it was any other port I wouldn't have worried about it. Even with the past sales - something with similar spec's is still $1000-1500AU over here. With WIn10 coming to an end relatively soon and many newer laptops are not able to be upgraded now (unless it's like a higher end gaming laptop) - laptops are certainly seeming like a bad investment. I certainly got more bang for the buck with a mini desktop PC, but certainly can't take that on the road with me.
You're right about the laptops being too high priced. The ones that have the specifications that you need. And the only other options the cheap stuff, but that's just not there. It seems to be that you only go to the top of the line for the cheap, and there's no wind between that's acceptable.
@@johnishappy I mean you can get a "cheaper" gaming laptop, but they're quite bulky and heavy compared to business machines. By cheap stuff I gather you're referring to chromebooks and such? Yeah, they're pretty low spec'ed for a reason. But they have their place. I may just go the second hand route to replace what I have. BTW I'm going to give LM another go 😂, but try and replace some of the apps with KDE apps and see how I go.
After using Linux I can't get used to the Windows GUI or the way things are done either.
It's funny how being away from Windows for so long has changed me, everything about it, how you approach the computer and how you think about using it. It's a subtle difference but big at the same time.
I accidentally came across MX-Linux the other day and installed it on my VM on Mac. It was nice. However, when I wanted to run neovim, it suggested "sudo apt install". When I tried that it installed an old version of neovim. Often it did not have other packages, so I had to download binaries or deb files and hand install those. That was quite disappointing as I really liked how MX looked.
I noticed that MX Linux runs well, but doesn't do well with some packages.
Worst xfce look ever.
been using the 6.8 kernel on the new lm22, too many bugs on hardware related softwares; mainly my wifi doesn’t work well on 6.8.. so decided to go back to lm 21.3 with kernel 5.15🙂
Yeah, it's all about finding what works best for your specific setup.
Me personally, I’m kinda conflicted. On one side it’s useful if you wanna test out your lyrics and see what it would sound like in a actual song but on the other it’s like someone could just start producing music with AI which could be concerning for people who actually put time into there music.
Music comes from people, generated sounds can be made with AI, two completely different things for sure.
thanks for this, it gave me the idea to look for plasma discover with flatpak and snap backends with synaptic package manager and install it on my Xfce rig, much nicer experience! ty
That's pretty awesome, I'm glad it worked out for you!
Typed in "mint kernel" in the search field, your video came up on top and - it was exactly what I wanted! A clear and concise answer to my question. So I'll stick with 5.15. Thanks a lot! :)
That was my experience, you have to be careful with kernels.
Its been said that Linux, like Linux Mint, just works...however in my experience that statement applies more to Windows than Linux. I have used Linux and Windows and every so often I run into a problem with Linux which in order to fix, if there is a fix, I have to research and modify a config file or the like. I have never had to do that in Windows....it has always just worked.
I guess we're all different.
So, its Debian with an Xfce DE with a few tools i wont be using and a panel stuck on the left side of the screen which i will pull down anyway
Rolling release distros are cool, but they introduce too many stability issues for my liking. If you can deal with those issues, then great. But for me personally, as long as my system can play games and get work done, I'm happy. Stable releases don't update constantly for a good reason. Linux Mint hits the right balance between a stable release and maintaining the capability of supporting relatively newer hardware as well, especially after the recent release of Linux Mint 22 Wilma, where they transitioned to the 6.8 kernel.
Yeah, I like the way Mint does things, it's about the best of both worlds, stable and up to date.
Thanks so much for this. Is normal Linux users who just want to get things done appreciate people like you.
You're welcome! I'm just trying to be helpful.
How is gaming on mint? Does it support steam or any other game store
I'm not the guy, I don't game at all.
For me, I only have to use Windows to use a PDF program - if there was a suitable, easy to use Linux version, or web app version I'd never be using Windows again
I use qpdfview, seems to work well as a reader.
@@johnishappy Any idea if it works as a PDF editor? That's my use case.
main stream media is control by deep state so they only tell what you want to hear not what is true
I never listen to the MSM for that very reason.
Just look at "Operation Mockingbird", where the CIA was working with the media.
Those agencies and the media, a bad cocktail for everyone.
Have you tried Windows x-lite?
I haven't tried that. Is that like a stripped down version?
so do you like windows 11 24h2?
I don't know anything about it!
Windows 11 is the worst program I have ever come across! When my Windows 10 PC becomes redundant I am going to format it and install my old XP and us my old programs and use my phone for all my banking
XP was probably the last good Windows.
@@johnishappy i really enjoyed Vista and 7, legit
I still have to do things in Windows because there's no viable alternative in Linux and it's just quicker to boot back into Windows for those couple of things. That being said, I find myself doing Linux'y type things in Windows and wondering why it's not working 😂🤣. My desktop mini computer hasn't been booted into Windows in over 6 months
That's usually what happens.
Sometimes to get a windows program to work I add it to my Steam library as a "game". Then I use Steam's compatibility options to "play the game".
Interesting, could you expand on that?
What I've learned is that the majority of Microsoft Office who insists they cannot switch to an alternative such as WPSOffice or LibreOffice - and therefore can't switch to Linux - don't even use 1% of it's functionalities, I've come across Excel users who didn't know to replicate a formula by dragging down the cell, another who copied data from one spreadsheet to the other by copying and pasting each individual cell to the correct spot, and another who didn't even know how to use the autocorrect. I think the latter was used to an older office that was a bit different and got lost just by getting a new one and logically would not have much trouble switching to another suite. The resistance against linux nowadays it seems is way more based on ignorance rather than actual need.
Ignorance in this case is not bliss.
Like so many others i have to use windows at work. I hate every minute of it. It's become so incredibly intrusive with popups everywhere, apparently you don't click on what you intended to click because some stupid popup was silently taking its time to load.
It's not a legitimate os anymore. It's a data collection software program that says it's an os. MS lost the focus a long time ago.
I'm trying to move to linux after copilot got installed on my machine, plus win10 only had 1 year left of support (unless you pay up to extend support). My issue is there is very limited support for nvidia and the only android emulator requires wayland, which runs bad on nvidia. So disappointing that linux still isn't easy to get into, after years of saying "gaming is almost there with linux, I'll switch over".
I've never had that problem but I'm not a gamer so...
