I was a young woman of twenty when Aberfan happened, and I will never forget the horror I felt watching the faces of the poor parents waiting in vain for their children who would never come home. The wickedness of the Coal Board and the government was unbelievable. I was very conscious of ‘Us’ and ‘Them’, and how justice is only for the rich and powerful.

This accident was horrible in its self but how the government and the mining company treated the people of Aberfan and what they got away with is deplorable. The ongoing suffering these people of Aberfan had to endure would have been unbearable.

If that were my family members killed, I would have told the coal mines where to stick their 500 pounds! How dare they!!

I remember this well. I was 14. All the UK was shocked, and there were many of us kids who got together to fund raise. In my school we sold biscuits and squash at breaktime and donated our pocket money. It was a profound learning moment for me when it turned out bosses' greed caused this. First: Testing "how close grieving parents were to their dead kids" BEFORE relief money was issued??? Second: Queen Elizabeth abjectly refused to pay a visit to Aberfan stating it was not the crown's responsibility to publicize herself. If there was one major screw up by Her Majesty in her long reign, that decision was it -- which she regretted the rest of her life.

Very sad. This happened in puerto rico too in October 1986. Months before people were complaining about a broken water pipe and it was making mud but the local workers didnt listen and did nothing. Then the weekend before it happened it rain several inches and it saturated the ground even more. So the entire mountain fell on the valley below. Over 300 people died and most could not be dug out cuz of the mud. So they were legt there and today is a memorial ground. A big plaque is placed there with everyones name that perished that day. RiP ❤
