Evolution of Refraction Light Design
Просмотров 8574 месяца назад
This is a compilation of videos I recorded during the development of the lighting component for MGA Sculpture Studios' Refraction, which is on display in the main elevator lobby at the JW Marriott Residences at Clearwater Beach. MGA came up with a brilliant plan involving a grid of waves with movement in the light behind it to create interesting angles and reflections reminiscent of looking up ...

Build video of second (backup) apple for The Giver
Просмотров 192 года назад
This is a video chronicling the build of a radio-controlled apple for a show put on at StageWorks. The guts are based on a 3v arduino pro-mini and NRF-24 radio module. The build shows the process of building the shell of the apple that surrounds those guts. I patterned an apple with tape and a plastic bag, cut it to a flat shape and made a copy with my printer, then I cut the pattern out of pla...

Magical Flaming Trident

This trident is made from acrylic and polyester resin, and includes multiple animated light strips down the entire staff, with 2 in each trident tine. The trident was built for a local theatrical production of The Little Mermaid, I sketched and molded the trident head itself from styrofoam, which I coated in PVA and then polyester resin before dissolving the styrofoam with acetone and removing ...
Dmx controlled pulleys
Просмотров 1 тыс.5 лет назад
These are two 12v stepper motors configured to monitor DMX light control signals for forward or backward speed control. We will be using them to harrowingly propel the small speck of dust on which all of Whoville resides. Hopefully later we will find many other uses. These controllers have 8 DIP switches on the side that can be used to set any DMX channel between 0 and 255.

    What did u use to make that

      I used 5mm rgba strips like this www.amazon.com/WS2812B-ALITOVE-Addressable-Programmable-Raspberry/dp/B07R6LR7DK/ chained in a zig zag matrix, driven by an arduino-type microprocessor with hard-coded flame animation frames in the program. The strips were arranged on a few pieces of stiff wire and the lighting part was wrapped with fake spiderweb material. I think all the rest of the materials are in the description. A good place to start from is this project learn.adafruit.com/animated-flame-pendant my version just scales it up a bit using the neopixel library and some arithmetic.

    I'm working on a project right now that would be much easier if I had a connection at the center of my EL panel. Think it's maybe doable if I put a small hole at the center for wire routing?

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 2 года назад

      it would be a very interesting experiment. You'd need to put a hole through the back to the non-glowing bus layer, but not go through it at all, heating up something blunt might do it. The panel has one big flat bus in the middle and a long skinny bus around the edges that connects to the ITO coating, the invisible top electrode, usually in one place the big bus panel goes out through the side to where the plug comes at the factory. You'd need to keep at least some of that skinny outside bus somewhere on your finished piece to attach the second electrode.

    what voltage with current you are used to light this things up?

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 2 года назад

      I'm just using a pocket inverter, it converts 2 AAs to >100vac at the correct frequency. Check adafruits EL panel product page for detailed specs.

    Can the wires be soldered directly to the panels?

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 3 года назад

      I've never attempted soldering, I would expect the plastics to melt. The current is so low that any conductive ink that sticks will work fine, if you don't have any conductive ink you might even be able to use a few drops of water and a drop of elmers glue mixed into some finely ground pencil graphite.

    We've got foam ones we are going to project onto for a holiday display. Your solution seems like the most cost effective dmx solution for this. I may have questions later.

    Hey Michael, this is the first I've seen too where it's a pulley to move a prop. I'd like to work with you to build these for our 2021 halloween show. I want some that can raise / lower pumpkins .

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 3 года назад

      With some beefier motors, you could raise and lower real pumpkins, but I highly recommend carving them from styrofoam so you don't need a such a loud motor to move them around. If you make them out of foam, you can pre-shatter them so they explode with yarn guts but can be put back together like a jigsaw puzzle. I used an I/R led to make the pumpkin trackable too so I could project a face on it :) biluminal.com/2019/10/29/infrared-tracking-projection/

    Would you mind explaining that setup?

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 4 года назад

      Sure, it's a somewhat complicated project as a whole, which part would you like me to explain? I used a cheap L298N stepper controller from amazon and a stepper that matches it. An arduino nano serves as the brains, i used 2 4.5v AA holders for power (in series to make 9v), to keep the profile low, and a very common serial-to-dmx module to receive signals from my light booth software. I'd be happy to share code, wiring, whatever you need.

      wltd.org/blog_images/arduino_dmx_bb.jpg this shows how you wire up dmx to the converter, you can connect to any serial you want on the arduino. The ground path is wildly redundant in the wiring example here, you can just connect XLR1 to ground on the converter to both DE and RE pins to keep the converter active, i always do, you dont need 5 wires going to a breadboard.

  • @tastewar
    @tastewar 6 лет назад

    Cool stuff! A couple of thoughts for you: 1. Have you thought about soldering your wires to the copper tape before affixing the tape to the panel? That might alleviate concerns about overheating and give you a better solder connection; 2. What would you think about protecting your work with epoxy instead of tape + cyanoacrylate?

    • @semegraph
      @semegraph 6 лет назад

      That's a great point, I could solder the wires to the copper first, I think that might be better, as long as I did the soldering on a hard flat surface. I could use epoxy, but I find it messier and slower. Usually when I am making my own pads like this it is because i am cutting half a dozen peices of panel that I plan to animate and/or separately mount on a fairly rigid surface, and superglue and tape seem to be about the right about of time and mess for those purposes. If I my peices were going to be flexing or the wires were going to be moving around, I think the epoxy would absolutely be better.
