Karin's Orchids

Welcome to my orchid channel!
I'm posting videos about my orchids on the windowsill and
how I grow my orchids under such difficult circumstances with very low humidity, regular tap water and quite low-light. ( additional Led-lights)
At home, every flowering really is a milestone for me! To replicate the orchid in questions natural habitat is not easy but well worth trying.
I have a lot of orchids in different genuses. 2024 I've got atleast 300 of them.
And I have my own trials and errors that I want to share with you!
I show repottings, Bloom & spike videos as well as orchid haul/unboxings, shorts and growing area tours etc
I decided to use the english language instead of Swedish, as more people out on the youtube platform understand english than swedish ;-)
My goal is to build a nice platform with atleast 1-3 updates every week, in terms of longer videos, surveys, community pictures, shorts etc
Hope you'll enjoy what I'm doing here!
Love for U to subscribe.💚💛💙🩵💜🤎

Theres the flamethrower!! Soo gorgeous. You could enter that one in a competition for sure. The perfect blooms on the second rene marques, so beautiful
Oh I see now that the old blooming from the past is the color I am used to.
I've never seen a flamethrower with such blend of colors. I thought they were more like the parent. But it's beautiful, truly.
Omg can't wait to see the magic trick!
Hi Karin great video yes I have the Rene Marques two of them and both have slightly different flowers one is great like the one you showed and the other one has wider lips hehe 😄 I think it's getting a balance between viewers and subscribers I found it to difficult so packed in my channel
@@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o Ah, do you also have lne looking like the first one I showed? With smaller lip? Well yes, running a channel successfully ( so you can make a living out of it etc) will take time, you need to invest a lot of money, get a good sponsor, interact with the right 'friends & channels' livi in a country with lots of people etc etc, and ah did I mention that you also need to quit your job? As the channel would need you to put down 8 hours or more a day. I'm mot negative only realistic. But still I think its way to fun to make videos to quit, bur my channel will never be a huge one. So I understand why you slut down your channel. The thought has crossed my mind many times the last year but, well no, not yet. 😁
@KarinsOrchids Hi the first Rene Marques you showed no not seen one like that before I don't have one with that colouration.. Well I hope keep your channel and it grows for you you deserve it after all the work you put into it 😉 👍
Wow! This Cattleya is really gorgeous.... enjoy! 🎉 P.S. Would you be so kind of telling me what are your grow conditions? Did you get this to flower on a windowsill or do you have a greenhouse?
@@lourdescruz9516 Hi there thank's for watching! That was its previous blooming last december, now its doing it again with 4 blooms, better sized and better shaped. I grow it merely on the windowsill, south/East facing window. With an extra grow light bulb over it. 😀
Nice flamethrower!

My first angraecum didieri rotted away but I really wanted to have one in my collection so I got another one and it started doing the same thing until I stopped using my faucet water! I started using rain water and now it’s growing like crazy. It’s pushing out 2 flowers and a bunch of new roots 😃❤️

Hi Karin. I love your new phal, it's so different to the mottled pink/purple variety. The yellow/red is unusual and in my opinion looks stunning. Thanks for sharing some updates on your orchids as well as the amaryllis.

Oh my goodness you have truly a lot of reassuring growth and spikes and healthy growth on your orchids and plants! Clearly they are all rejoicing and giving thanks to you for the war that has been won with you and the pests I knew you would've victorious! Simply because of your vigilance. Congratulations and what beautiful blooms I have been witnessing on your channel. I think the vanda crown fox is stunning And can't wait to see the Stephen isler, and many many others. Nice amaryllis collection! I had no idea there were so many different ones! -L
@@LauraStansfield-tw7xb Hi there! Oh yes, amaryllis are addictive as well. More and more new ones appearing at yhe gardencenters for each year. Yesterday I just 'had to' buy no 12... which I already have, the white one with red linings around it and greenish center. That one is called 'picasso'. Next year I'll bring them all out as soon as its frost free out there. Then it will problably postpone their flowering untin july. The Stefan Islers spike looks goid already at this early stage. Already strikingly orange/Red. A wonderful orchid. Its so nice to grow orchids again now when the pests are gone. At times I even doubted my self and my skills. But I guess It wasn't my fault more than putting the infested plants into my apartment in the first place. Thank's for the lovely comment 😍😍
Hi Karin wow another great orchid video a good variety of content 👌 your vandas are doing well and your Rhynchostylis I am a big fan of Rhynchostylis Gigantea and of course Vandas 😀 Well I have been thinking about transitioning my orchids from my greenhouse to a large breeze block shed I have emptied and thinking of setting up it for a indoor grow room 🤔 I think I will be able to control the gowing conditions climate better so this is what I am thinking of doing,.. what do think of this idea ?
@@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o Hi there my friend! Better late then never .. what I think about that idea? Well just look out for the floor, maybe add some plastic covering material of some sorts underneeth it? If you do have the space and room for it I wouldnt hesitate a bit, you know I wouldn't. Go ahead! I keep a heat mat to the bottomof my ikea milsbo but I thought It was a bit too weak. It only increases the temp with 1-2 degrees. No use.. it was due to you and your inspiration that I got the 2 tricolors. I bet one day .. I remember yours beeing a lot bigger? Am I right?
@KarinsOrchids Hello yes I have some very large vanda tricolors and they flower every year without fail now they are about 12 years old 😄 Yes I have a cement floor in the shed I am converting into a grow room it's a project I want to try the shed is about 8ft x 15ft so if successful I will keep the orchids in the if I think it isn't going be successful I will think about redesigning my greenhouse in thr new year we will see how things go 😀 All the best G 👍
@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o Aha, now I get it ! Thought it was a moveable shed 😁 oh well, hmm you'll def need some heating in there, any electricity installed there? What about lights? Any windows? I don't take U for a fool just curious trying to paint the full picture of it 😁 12 years .. well done!
@KarinsOrchids Thank you Karin yes I will be putting electric heaters fan heaters in and using full spectrum grow lights there are no windows Yes I'm sure there will be lots of tweaks to be done like adding more lights or less light ect I will put humidifiers in plus a hosepipe as I don't have to worry about water on the floor 😜 I got make some more shelves there is lots of work to be done before I can move my orchids in 😀
@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o Wow! Well then,, I know what will be going on around your area the following months then! Great idea G! And an inspiring project indeed 😀🌻
Wow.. I don't even like pink very much and that is one of the most gorgeous blooms.. what amazing detail!
@@LauraStansfield-tw7xb Yes, she has okebof the best cattleya blooms I've ever seen! 😍
Hej, I have 2 Phal. mariae which have not flowered yet although they grow well. I dumped my St. Barbara from OG finally. Instead of growing it got less every year. My Laelia anceps is in spike but dumped all its roots and simply fell out of its pot and a have no clue WHY, OH WHYYY??? According to all orchidlovers out there I should cut the spike and try to save the plant, but WTF, if she dies she dies. There is already a bud forming and its in ICU. Good purchase, happy growing and many regards ❣
I don't order orchids in winter/ cold temperatures although they are well packed. Bad experience whatever...visiting the Schwerter nursery is always a pleasure but to choose is quite difficult. ❄ A few plants are always struggling in the winter season ( heating, no light, cold temperatures). Maybe you know some tips and tricks to deal with it...? Happy growing 🌼🌸🌺
@@yvonnela4979 Good morning! Sorry for the late reply. I also have bad experiences ordering too late in the season. Down to freezing. This order you just saw was actually from late october. Think I placed my very last order last week as now we have below 0 coming and going. And one cannot be sure they don't ship them moist. If you saw my OG haul with the bc yellow bird you'll know. Half is already gone of the poor plant. As I grow indoors during the cooler season I don't have to struggle with too cool temperatures, its quite the opposite. But I do have a heat mat from.nelson garden to the bottom of my milsbo cabinet for my vandaceous ones. And in my kitchen area I try to lower the temperatures in the window by not closing the ventilation properly. It surely works well. Thank's for watching happy to see you here! 😍

Hi Karin. I'm green with envy!!! I would be over the moon too after having received such an amazing lot of phals and at good prices too. I used to have one of the sogo types with the variegated leaves but it developed some kind of rot in the form of a thumb print which I tried to treat with a sulphur paste but it was too late and the stem ended up rotting. I never did get to see it bloom either, very sad. Anyway, you'll be able to enjoy some beautiful new blooms about spring time, so keep us updated, I'm looking forward to seeing them. Thank you for sharing this wonderful unboxing.
@@renatecormick7399 Thank's for this lovely comment ❣️ Well its been about one month now since this order ( as I did a few orders in a row in a short period of time this video had to wait ) the sogo spike is now 12 cm long or more so shortly there will be a phalaenopsis whats in bloom video 😀😍 too bad with your sogo..they seem to be kinda sensitive to rot of various type..

@@andreaallum8859 Ahh, I've seen pics from the uk.. looks soooo beautiful, we only got 0.5 cm in places here and there all over town. You must admit it gets lighter and easier to be creative with some light snow all around? 😁😍
Hej, that's a lot of Rhyncostylis. Btw, I like this oriental lamp stand, is it electric or for tea lights? I would by it immediately. I potted my same Currlin Wutt... in a big pot with peanuts at the bottom and big chunks of bark. This summer all the roots above the surface grew really beautiful and as it was sooo hot I sprayed them daily. What I didn't take into consideration was that there also went water into pot so it was constantly wet and after some time I found it full of white mold. Now its in a shallow glas bowle. My monachica is already 30 cm high and currently in spike and has a little keiki since forever. Christmas markets have already opened on the 15th and YT is flooding us viewers with commercials for christmas gifts. Many regards ❣
@@annareiter952 Ahh, christmas everywhere now, everywhere U go. But I think its kinda nice. The lamp stand is Turkish. Electric. I have a single one as well with the same pattern which I bought at a retreat center. Aha, well 30 cm is quite tall for a monachica I'd say, considering its slow growth speed? Or perhaps its highly individual I guess. Do you keep your monachica warm? Humid? And significant fluctuations in temperatures for her? I'd love to see mine in bloom... grr.. funny that you also picked the wuttiphanaara one. Its a lovely bloomer! Take care A! Today our first tiny bit of snow appeared feels great,😍
@@KarinsOrchids All my windows are south-east facing. Some of them are in front of a massive chestnut tree which works as a natural AC in summer. So some plants on the windowsills get only direct sunlight when the tree is leaveless. My monachica lives on one of these windowsills since it moved in from a Columbian Vendor in 2020 from our annual show. Sidnote -> it was before the first national lockdown. Covid was already lurking in Italy and as I'm sometimes a 'realist and pessimist' I was wondering if I should go to the show. The plant was 12 cm high and the seller told me it was FS and showed me a little something on the stam which turned out to be a new root. It is in my kitchen (I like to cook and she is accostomed to all sorts of scents... garlic, onions etc.) along with some Tols. and one of my Angrecum leonis. It flowered exactly 3 years after the purchase before we had a show again. So I have a sentimental connection to her... 'everything gets normal and will be fine'... if you know what I mean. The flowers were more beige then orange with red dots and that's how she blooms every year. So I guess its not only an individual growth habit but also a flowering one. After her first flowering I purchased two other plants (1x Akerne, 1x O&M and a 1/2... seedling from Schwerter which doesn't know if it should stay or go). Regarding humidity, some of my rooms have underfloor heating, which was already there when I moved in, so its dry and around 19/20 C in winter. The temps are much higher in summer. I'm really curious how the other plants will turn out, growth and flowering wise.
@annareiter952 Hi there!guess what, I woke up with a running nose again,,speaking of covid I mean.. this autumn has been very exhausting with one cold following closely ofter the other. But well.. ahh, I got my monachica 2,5 years ago april -22 from O&M. Aa a fs one. And well lately its been taking off quite well I guess in the cabinet with loads of light and humidity as well. So this spring it will be 3 tears since I got her so 😉. So you went on and bought a few more monachicas? Experimental purposes? Or were you only tired of the show one not blooming? They can surely come as tiny plants. There are a few varieties out there..don't remember its name now but its a monachica cross which has got the same snall size nut s lot more orange/yellow flowers..but I guess the monachicas bloom charachter can vary a lot. Depending on how much light etc it gets. Talk soon 😍😍
Very nice

I wonder if you got any neofinetias in your collection? I like vandas but they take a lot of space. I've got two, one is sitting in a glass vase, the other in a basket with big chunks of bark. At least it works for me. Happy growing🌺🌸🌼
@@yvonnela4979 That's 2 types of vanda setups O surely recognise 😄 I di have a couple of more vandas not shown intjos video! A coerulea and a miniatum and classic blue. I only have one neo. A falcata in my glass cabinet in my kitchen. Recieved it tiny, it still is tiny after quite some time so maybe I'll stick to vandas after all. Perhaps not the tallest sized ones though 😁 Thank's for watching long time no see 😍
Great job with the vanda-type orchids! 🎉🎉
@@CharlotteDessi Thank you! Hopefully the rhynchostylis ones will settle in their new setup!
Good video as I am having quite some issues with my vandatype orchids. Threw away one yesterday ;-(
What's going on with them? Where did you get them from and was it recently? Sad to hear that!!
I have been experimenting with my vandas and so far for my environment clay pots and lava rock seems to works best for large vandas and for any neo crosses and smaller species clay pot with bark seems to works best. I hope your new set up work great for you
@@2702foxy Ahh, I do love clay pots as well. But for my vandas it was a bit too dry. I tried lava ones.. but rejected that method. Maybe I was a bit too fast to do so. Many ytubers seem to prefer the lava rock setup! 😀
Lovely blooms there Karin! 😍
@@marilindqvist6071 Thank's my dear! 😀😀 Finally with some proper treatment and the thrips gone..miracles are finally beeing achieved here ( again)
I love your turntables. If I had a nickel for every time I have knocked over the plant in the front row of my shelves!
@@dianeleonard1040 😁 yes, they are very nice actually
Hi Karin I enjoyed seeing how your vanda type orchids are doing good job 👏 👍
@@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o Thank you! Finally some results! 😍
@KarinsOrchids Yes looking good 👍
Those are beautiful blooms! I love the colors 😍
Thank you! 😀😀
Amazing. How old is it your Angraecum?? I have one angraecum sesquipedale which is still too small to bloom. I also have other 2 angraecum ( 1 year to blooming) which keeps growing but not really fast. 😞
@@alec984 Hi there! I bought mine as a nfs orchid april-17. September-20 it bloomed for the first time. Boy do they grow slowly but as many of them grow very large its a quite good thing 😍 so patience
There is are not many things nicer than a box of orchids to open and unbox 😀👍
@@GazzybearsOrchidAddiction-i7o No, you're very right. Its better than any random christmas present 😀 this week another co-order will ( hopefully) arrive 😁
@KarinsOrchids Awesome 👌 👍
Hej, the spectabile was on my wishlist the first moment I saw her on YT. But I'm always confused bc of its allegedly FS. Justindutchtropics had a huge one from Lucke last year and said - despite its size - it will take 'some time' as he had seen the plant in flower before. On the other hand I saw a video from an US-Yter who bought it as a bagbaby, small/mini sized, which flowered within short. At our show a Asian vendor had one for more than 50 € and told me it would be FS but it wasn't as big as Justin unboxed one. So I let it be. Many regards ❣
@@annareiter952 OH boy did I wait for this one! Considered tricky to grow, and problably like wise to bloom. But I felt my collection wasn't complete without one on it. If you google it it surely looks like a huge plant. I found one pic of it my sized one.. so mine might bloom under the perfect circomstances.. but well time will tell 😍
Hi Karin! The cattleya seedlings will be secure in your specially created greenhouse over there.Tolumnias seem to be mature.Nice haul.
@@josejkoonthanam thank you J! Yes, if the tiny ones does well the newbees will as well in there. Maybe not sharing the same water but well the same a bit more humid/warmer space 😍
Well… every orchid nursery lying about the size 😢 I bought a quadricolor from Schwerter this summer in a 6 cm pot - 2 years from FS, well it didn’t even had a pseudobulb yet so… 😫🤣🤣🤣 It looked like the plants you got was recently imported Hopefully they recover in your care 🙏
@@CharlotteDessi Yes, sometimes you just not get lucky.. but well they'll grow and hopefully grow into better stronger even more resilient plants now from this young I mean. But I do think that thus size matter had become much better..until now 😁😁 well well guess they all import from the same source...
Hi Karin. A good selection of plants in various stages of growth will definitely keep you busy. Even though I don't own a yellow bird I've watched so many videos which have included this orchid and they appear to be easy to grow & bloom so I have no doubt you can do well with it. Good luck with them all, I look forward to the update video to come.
Thank's for watching R! Yes, hopefully the rottening process will stop. 😀
