Hey NavBoys. Can you pls do the same but for the Oudie N IGC. 🙏
We'll add it to the list!
Fucking Hell… THANK YOU! I’m currently rebuilding the panel of a glider in our club and the electrics are… adventurous:D. Really lucky to find your channel! Thanks!!👌🏼😁
Glad we could help!
Thanks for sharing, very informative. What did you use for painting the panel?
We use Nextel
So what is the history of putting those instrument-specific battery switches? Is it some UK thing? I have come across this once, in a UK exported glider. Seems to include a lot of solder joints (which break eventually) and switches for no good reason. We do it with couple of big LFP batteries with two simple on/off switches to power up main bus (giving you off/1/2/both options) and pull type breakers for instruments (can be switched off in emergency).
These switches have 3 postions so it's not just about being able to switch each instrument individually on/off but also being able to select which battery supplies each instrument. In a competition environment you could separate your loggers for example so if one battery power supply fails you won't lose both traces. You can also separate your navigation equipment from your radio and transponder. It gives you more redundancy
@@Navboys_ltd Yeah I get that. Just seems a really complicated way to solve a problem that is basically "not carrying enough battery capacity for long flight".
It's not about capacity. Modern avionics are very efficient and a healthy battery should easily last a whole flight. It's about redundancy. A single switch gives you a single circuit and a single point of failure for the whole system. One failure in this panel won't take out the whole thing.
Thanks for the overview!
Glad we could help!
I like your contant
Thanks!
Nice work
On behalf of BB's syndicate , thanks for the professional job.
Our pleasure!
Post cure can be done in multiple sessions? I thought it has to be done in one go.
It's a common practise to post cure over multiple sessions, as long as the total time at the desired temperature is achieved
Loving this channel. Keep up the good work Navboys!
Thanks!
I bought new blank panel from ALEXANDER SCHLEICHER for 189 euro plus delivery. On the other hand I would never even try to rebuild it without proper mould and vacuum.
Yes, for some gliders it is cheaper to buy a replacement panel. But in most cases it's more economical and a lot faster to repair the existing one.
@@Navboys_ltd What kind of paint for this panel did you used, if you don't mind?
@@filimonchik123tube Sorry missed this comment. We use Nextel
Had the privelege to fly with G a few times, best damn instructor I've ever had.
He is a fantastic teacher
To have you guys make a bronze syllabus would be incredible. You only briefly mentioned it, but I can see that being something that both gets you guys recurring views, and gives a lot back to the gliding community as a whole. ❤
Thanks - I think it would be an incredibly useful resource and something that's been on my to do list for years
Simple but to the point, thank you!
Glad it helped!
So much for a radio check...... This is such a great lesson.
A scary lesson but we hope a useful one!
Thank you for putting so much effort into making these shows. Would it be possible to include more glider aerobatics content?
Thanks for watching! If something does something cool, we'll do our best to include it
The creators of Flarm should explain their role in several accidents in Europe. By illegally blocking a working flarm that had no updates. They themselves released updates that were difficult to install despite many attempts. Which often ended with the helpless pilot not being able to update. Aviation authorities are investigating these cases. Pilots should report such illegal actions! And poor technical support despite the high costs of the system.
We're not familiar with any of these incidents and don't know of any flarm units that have been left unsupported. Can you elaborate?
Moral of the story, having a wife that grinds your gears always gets in the way of a great gliding day!
Some great lessons shared there, thank you 👍
what a great interview, thanks for sharing!
Thanks G for sharing this with the world!
I learned a lesson about icing a few years ago while flying my Sportcruiser. It was a beautiful winter day with sunshine and crystal clear air so I went for a jolly and was flying at about 5000' and after a while I decided to pop down to Lasham for a cup of tea but when I reached Basingstoke I could see a solid mass of Stratus cloud going down to the coast so I then descended to about 1000' just underneath the cloud . The vis was still fine but after less than a minute the canopy appeared to be fogging up. Alas I quickly found that it was on the outside and it was ice. The wings were also icing .I turned 180º and headed back to the sunny zone hoping to clear the ice and that worked. After while reflecting on what other options I could have taken one would have been to carry on as planned and assume the warmer moist air would defrost the aeroplane in time but it would have meant flying blind and that aircraft has no D/V panel. I think I took the safer option and I am still alive.
A fantastic, brutally honest and open lecture in what causes humans to make poor decisions. It translates into EVERY area of our lives, be it a failed DIY project with no consequences other than pocket change and irritation, to flying along a motorway in poor weather and being distracted by our thoughts, our family or friends or most commonly our obsession with stupid devices like phones and sat nav. We fail to remain present because we were not at the briefing! Flying is addictive and most addictions have damaging negatives in our lives. It was so good to hear you talk about 'narrative thinking' taking control over appropriate and vital actions. The classic 'holes in the Swiss cheese all lining up' is a constant in every aviation accident, as well as everywhere else in life. With so many habitual narrative led pathways in our everyday lives, it becomes the default for carrying out tasks. In flying, that is going to come unstuck at some point and the consequences will be serious. I absolutely love that you highlight the fact that however much we want a situation to work out during it unravelling before our eyes, it makes absolutely no difference to the facts or statistics of it actually working out. The 'universe not caring' concept is hugely important to grasp for everyone. It's the same as shouting at a block of concrete, in the hope it will move out of your way. You have to have thought about the problem way before and work out how to move a block of concrete from A to B well beforehand. It doesn't know or care! So glad you lived, unbroken, to teach this lesson. Fly safe! Post Script: In a previous life back in the late 1980's while playing at being Fire Crew on an airfield in the south east, we had a 'weather standby' called one Saturday in shit conditions with very low cloud and strong squalls blowing through with heavy wintery showers. One of the very few airborne that day was a Twin Comanche with student and experienced instructor. They called up to say returning due to rough running starboard engine. Minutes later it turned to an emergency as that engine stopped. Minutes later with us now at the business end of the active awaiting them popping through cloud, they updated to say the port engine was losing power and they would not make the runway. It was quite a moment. Seconds later later they appeared, turning a gentle final in and out of the very low cloud and fighting the wind. They descended with no gear showing and very little flap, clearly trying to stay clean and as fast as possible until the last moment. They dropped the gear very close in, descending like a rock, hit just the far side of the threshold on a footpath, bounced and the port prop stopped at that point. They touched down right on the very edge of the tarmac and coasted to a halt about a third into the runway. We drove up behind and I jumped out and went to the door of the aircraft, which cracked open a couple of inches and I asked if they were ok...stupid question but instinctive. They were both white, almost transparent, staring dead ahead and unable to speak for quite a moment. Then the instructor just quietly said, "were fine, thank you, just give us a minute" . I gently closed the door and returned to the fire truck to explain to my crew mate and we sat and waited. Eventually we towed them to the apron and I bought them both coffee which they drank in the aircraft. They didn't get out for some considerable time and when they did, it was obvious how emotional they had been. Your moment with a sweet old lady bringing you a flask and cake reminded me so much of that moment! ❤
Thanks G and team, great lesson.
A brilliant lesson on how Human Factors enables us to do the dumb things that get us into trouble. Thank you very much for putting that out there.
From the other side of the world, “Thanks, G” from another G. Marvellous to be able to learn from this at such a distance.
Great story and lesson, as always!
Excellent video. Very helpful. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
26:52 the mylar us great, but the hair needs some adjustment.😊
Filling up your cylinder at a dive shop: are you sure that this is a good idea, in view of the humidity//water in the oxygen? Aviation oxygen has to be dry, otherwise you risk freezing it all up at high altitudes? Or is the oxygen available at dive shops used for their dive mixtures actually dry?
Oxygen quality is far more important for diving than flying
@@Navboys_ltdFrom the book 'Dancing with the windd', page 267: 'Whether for welding, oqygenation of fish, the bleaching of paper pulp, aerospace and medicine, the gas is the same' and 'The aircraft quality differs from the medical and industrial quality by systematic control of the moistue and hydrocarbon contents plus compliance with stricter limits' and '...allowing the entry of moisture (unacceptable in aviation)...". I think it all depends on how much moisture there is in dive shop provided oxygen. Why no moisture in aviation oxygen? As the risk is that your system freezes up (which by definition does not exist in diving).
Thanks for the overview.

Great to see this, many thanks… Mylar is on our job list for this winter on the Ventus; I’m thinking we should have bought more than we did, as bound to waste a bit! And we may need the workshop for longer than we have allowed for….!,
Regarding the Pawnee AD, the NZCAA have cancelled the local requirement of the ANAC AD and raised their own AD which only mandates accomplishment of the two LAVIASA Service Bulletins. These bulletins do not require eddy current inspections as did the original AD. This regulatory change will make it much easier to comply with and keep the Pawnee’s in New Zealand serviceable and safe.
The New Zealand approach is based on the good work done by Gliding Australia, which as generously shared and excellent cooperation by CAA NZ. The Australians have also produced a mod to install smaller access panels, approved as an AMOC by CASA. It is hard to imagine that any regulatory authority would mandate an inspection where the document specified was not in that country’s language. A NZ club has had a certified translation made, which I’m sure could be shared.
@@bungee7503 yes, I know about the certified copy of the service bulletin. I was the person that initiated that being done. A gliding club member had a contact with a Spanish Translator. I have a copy of that on my desk as well speak 😀
A somewhat simplistic snippet in this video, as those in the Australian Gliding Pawnee Forum can attest. GA and CASA working hard on Alternative Methods of Compliance, alternative inspections (in the absence of any credible eddy current inspection procedures), load analyses etc plus exploring spar and wing replacement options and costs, translations, plus dialogue with numerous overseas authorities. Also facilitating inter-club cooperation to reduce ops impacts while fixes are pursued. My thanks to hard-working AW folks striving on our behalf. Yes it’s complicated. I am nervously awaiting Part 2 inspection outcomes for my club’s Pawnee.

Great video guys. Question about the TESA Brand double sided tape. What is the longevity on it. Is it easy to remove when needed. Are there any other brands that are better. I fly the Remote Control Airplanes.
It lasts for years on gliders and is usually only removed because the other two tapes have failed. In terms of removal, if you skip to the removal section on the video that will give a good idea of how difficult it is to remove
