This is by far my favorite scene of this show when the queen talks to the duke. I rarely cry, but this is the hardest I've cried from a show. All the former king wanted was to be with whom he loved, they weren't perfect, but they had regrets, guilt, and wished for atonement for giving up the thrown, and betraying the other royals. That and the queens compassion and guilt behind her eyes of holding a grudge for so long. Just a very sad way to go out in life.
Edward V111 would have brought down the monarchy. He was a nazi sympathizer and was passing secrets to the nazis. He wanted his own country to fall so he could be reinstalled King over his brother. He was a traitor to his people, and living in France was a gift when he should have been in prison. All this Wallis crap may have a lot of truth to it, but he would have been a terrible King. His brother, His Late Majesty King George, was the rightful ruler.

They got the look on Wallis Simpson’s face correctly when her husband died. She knew that without him, she would be broke and alone. And she was. I’m so glad that the Queen lived as long as she did. The years took the ‘crazy and selfishness’ out of Charles, for the most part. And the cancer diagnosis took whatever he had left. He got to keep his girl, and he was able to make her a Queen. But in the process, the whole world has judged Charles for what he is . . . a selfish man who only serves himself. And he’s paying for that now in low opinion polls - that I’m sure he doesn’t care about. Monarch’s as servants of the people was a new way to rule, and in the declining early-20th century kingdom QE2 handled it brilliantly. And children of icons rarely measure-up. Let’s hope that William is more like his grandmother and less like his father.
Oh shut it. You’d eat your left foot to be a quarter as relatable, vulnerable and resilient in the face of public worldwide adversity the way KC3 has endured in his life. It’s so easy to pass comment and hold people to past mistakes and errors yet I’d love to see how you and the rest of this comment section would hold up to the scrutiny and ridicule if they were given the fortunate position of having each one of their life’s failures and shortcomings made public on full display. Much of the boldness stems from the anonymity.
Have they forgotten about the Marburg files and the Nazi salutes and appeasement from Season 2? Here Edward is the unconventional freethinking progressive that might have been.
If, as many are saying, the Duke of Windsor's death scene and Charle's letter are fabrications, I think there should be disclosure of that fact. It is one thing to fill in the gaps of historical personages lives with inventions, but it is another thing to do this with living people. If Charles never wrote such a letter, than this is a very unfair portrayal of him.

Peter Morgan made a whole hour of television about Edward VIII without once mentioning the fact that he was a Nazi collaborator. Not a bloody "sympathiser," a COLLABORATOR. Oh, we just ignore that, do we? That's not pertinent? I don't know how Morgan can look at himself in the mirror after doing that. I would hang my head in shame. This show presents itself as history, a lot of people seem to take it as history, and it drives me nuts that it's such transparent monarchist propaganda.
I hope someday someone has the courage to tell the world on screen what happened to her (dutchess wallis) post Edwards death. I know to many she is seen as the villain, but her final years after Edwards death, you wouldn't wish that on your worst enemy
