Goshawk (Kiva) steals squirrel from a wild Red-Tailed Hawk
Просмотров 515Год назад
This was a crazy hunt. Kiva (goshawk) flew into a tree chasing a squirrel. The squirrel ran down the tree and up the backside of an adjacent tree. At this time a wild red-tailed must have been close by watching us and swooped in and nailed the squirrel. As soon as the hawk pulled the squirrel from the tree and went to fly off with it Kiva took of chasing it. By the time I got to them Kiva had t...

@@RedTalesFalconryAh, OK, it was mantling. It was a still image and I saw one clearly dead starling, and the dead looking leg under your Kestrel, and a wing out oddly, and the still image didn't look quite right. Glad I was wrong, and your Kestrel is fine. I'm studying bit by bit and plan on going falconry hunting with a game warden with a pair of red tails this fall. I accidentally and happily came across falconry about 20 or so months ago. Being an ever-dutiful husband, I heard my wife mention something she'd love to do and was a dream of hers - to go horseback riding on a sandy beach. After searching for days, the only place I could find with those criteria was 5 hours away. I'm 6'3" and not fat, but I'm far too heavy, and I'm not positive my wife would be slight enough to meet their weight requirements. Can you imagine taking your wife on a dream journey, just to get there after hours of driving, just for your wife to be told she's overweight for the horse. Can you imagine a much worse logical scenario for "worst husband fail of the year" award? Hunting forward, I found a place about 4 hours away that had a falconry experience. My wife was interested so I dug deeper. If you had a group of 6 or fewer, it was $200 per person. If a full group of 8, $150. If you wanted to fill in random open spots, it was $100. No refunds. Scheduling was 4-6 months out. You'd not know if the day was cancelled until the morning of the event due to weather. In this case, you could opt for a 50% refund. So, drive 4 hours, get a room overnight, food, fuel, show up and the day is cancelled, and you can reschedule in 3-6 months, and hope the next visit isn't rained out. That sucks as a business model, so I kept searching. My wife wasn't into the falconry experience at that point, but it reignited a passion for falconry that I have had since I was a kid. I just thought it was something reserved for wealthy people, so I didn't pursue the sport and dig deeper, and the internet wasn't around then to point me in the right direction. I started reading The Modern Apprentice website and watching every video Ben Woodruff put out, researching, learning, etc. Then I took Ben Woodruff's advice on finding a sponsor - don't look for a sponsor. Learn all you can. Read books, watch videos, learn all you can about the sport, and instead of asking for a sponsor, reach out to the local falconry association and introduce yourself, and see if you can get invited on some hunts by offering to beat the brush and make the hunting trip more successful, and get that in person exposure. Learn in person if falconry really is a good fit for you. Go on more hunts, go to events, get your test out of the way to show people how serious you are. Hopefully by then you've made a friend or two that is willing to be your sponsor and take you on as an apprentice. As you've likely figured out, I love Kestrels. I know many love their RTH, and I could hear that when I spoke to the game warden about going on a hunt with his two RTH. I'm in Central Virginia, and there are more squirrels than we know what to do with. Maybe 2 years ago I saw a squirrel run frightened into the bushes on the side of our neighbor's house across the road. Maybe a second later, what I assume was a RTH or RSH. The hawk opened its wings trying to flush the squirrel out to continue the hunt, and the squirrel ran back and forth to keep a big bush between itself and the hawk. This continued for 15-20 seconds until the squirrel got pissed off and switched from prey to predator, and instead of running to the side to escape the hawk, it ran straight at the hawk as if it was going to attack. The hawk wanted no part of this and flew off before the squirrel could reach him, but I just started laughing because I'd never have guessed that outcome.

@@RedTalesFalconry It just strikes me as odd these rodents have no natural fear of birds of prey. I have a bearded dragon that has never seen birds, and the first time he did, he ran full speed to get under the house. if not for the leash, he would have been gone. Now he sits in windows, but every time he sees a bird, he runs for cover. He was captive bred, yet still has this ingrained fear where captive bred rodents like you have do not. That's what makes me good in the technical field. I never just accept, I always ask "why".

  • @Troy-Echo

Nice video. I've seen similar traps with a two layer cover so the birds cannot reach the mice at all, so you never have an injured mouse during a trapping session. I think these were hand made, but still very effective. I am fairly certain I saw these on Ben Woodruff's channel. Gorgeous female American Kestrel. I'm working on learning more about falconry and have some hunts set up for this season to see if it's something I want to dedicate the time, effort and money into. Do you have any videos on weight management for Kestrels? They are such tiny birds, and I know a lot of people have not flown them and may not be able to do videos on their weight management.

By the time I got her to stop with tears streaming down my face and waving a broom at her to head her off she had two little baby bunny feet hanging out her mouth and she quickly swallowed it. The mother bunny would sit in my yard after that and stare at me and like a crazy lady I'd apologize to her for my dog killing all her babies. Very efficient hunting dog, even if ya don't want your dog doing it. Just happened again in yard.
