    Apologies for the threadnomancy, but this just appeared in my feed, and I was not aware of your channel until now. First, have a sub. Second, in my opinion, SJG won’t release a new edition of GURPS until they want to chase the “best ever RPG” crown, and make a serious attempt to dethrone D&D as the “go to” rpg. The current system must still be popular, as it still sells - heck, I still buy 4th edition GURPS stuff from e23, to this day. One of the things I do love about GURPS is the realism. It makes it so easy to convert other systems’ adventures, because of this. But I do agree that the basic rules need to be streamlined, to make it more accessible, and easier for new players to get into. Personally, I love the crunch of GURPS. But I think simpler mechanics in the core rules, and moving all the “rocket science” to either a supplement at the back of the rules, or as an optional, highly recommended, expansion, would go a long way to making the system more attractive to new players. Regarding the Advantages, Disadvantages, etc, I want them all in one place, so I don’t need to have multiple books open when creating characters. Perhaps a new edition should consist of a free, “rules-lite” version, such as already exists, but focuses on character creation, and core mechanics, to explain the system and how it works, along with a short solo adventure, to demonstrate said mechanics, attributes, skills, and advantages. The main rules have expedited versions of the more complicated rules, with “recommended” crunchier rules in a chapter towards the end of the book. GMs can choose what better suits their group, and use them, accordingly. That’s enough rambling for now. Cheers,

    One old school module that used a VERY dramatic variant of this was called “When a Star Falls” by Graeme Morris (UK4). Not to spoil too much, but the module opens with the party not receiving an intercepted letter, but the MEMORIES of a DEAD ADVENTURING PARTY through supernatural means. The party receives flashes of past memories, scenes of the quest that they were on and why it was important, and even scenes involving important plot knowledge or secret passphrase that they need to know for the adventure. I always found it VERY innovative, and I’ve not seen it repeated in any modules or APs since then.

I'm pretty good at remembering rules, but I still got the official gm screen and made notes for myself, mostly about the events and what order to them in and how many turns to do things in, stuff like that. I too ended dropping the sotillo, our game ended with one guy going abomination as the neomorph charged the group. I managed to break almost all of them, but the one person left standing got so lucky in their medic rolls they saved everyone, lol.

    The only thing I don't like about this kind of game is the idea of having to play multiple characters through the adventure. As a player and as a GM I tend to prefer a more narrative style with as much character development as I can get. Even if it's a single short-term objective for a oneshot. It's the same reason I'm not particularly attracted to the idea of playing or running Shadowdark. But I like letting the PCs feel like they're in danger and the ideas presented in this adventure, plus your suggestions.

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 10 дней назад

      I think of funnels as RPG-adjacent. You do lose out some of the roleplaying and the depth of characters that you usually see in RPGs. But you gain more situational fun as players take more risks, and man, when you are down to your last character, he becomes absolutely precious to you. I love 'em, but I also wouldn't want to play them all the time.

    The goblin raiding party, that’s my version of Tucker’s kobolds. It consists of 4 goblins, 3 wolves and a goblin rogue 3 leader. I created the encounter for 3e originally, so it works best in that or Pathfinder 1st edition. The goblins won’t attack if they don’t have surprise. They’ll run away in the first round if the players are aware of them. They’ll do it over and over again until they catch the players unaware. If they get a surprise round, the two unmounted goblins will fire short bows at horses first if any are present, to prevent the PCs being able to outrun the goblins. The two regular mounted goblins will use spears and their wolves to attack any unmounted or unarmored PCs, preferring to kill the horses and injure the PCs. The leader will focus his attacks on any pc with a staff and robes, trying to down that character as quickly as possible. If the leader manages to get the wizard on the ground with his wolf’s trip attack in the surprise round, he’ll use the first regular round for a second sneak attack on the mage while his wolf will go for a second bite & trip. The two mounted goblins will move to where the two archers are, attacking anyone between them and the archers as they ride by. The archers will fire a second round of arrows at the horses, or anyone with a missile weapon. In the second regular round, the leader will break off and ride to escape. If he was lucky in the previous two rounds, the mage has already suffered a bite (1d6), sneak attack (1d6+2d6), a second bite (1d6) and a second sneak attack (1d6+2d6), which is more than needed to kill a 5th level mage. The two riders pick up the two archers and break off combat to escape. Their goal was to kill anything that looked like a spellcaster and any horses, so the PCs are on foot for the next ambush when the PCs camp for the night. The goblins have an average Stealth +12 or so, which means the PCs likely won’t notice them sneaking into their camp. The four regular goblins will try getting the sleeping PCs while the leader sneaks up on the sentry. The goal is to catch the bulk of the party sleeping and seriously wound whoever is guarding, so they will attack and then leg it away as fast as possible again. If they’re caught before the attack, they’ll grab backpacks and weapons before fleeing, to weaken the party for the next night. They will repeat the late night attacks as often as it takes to kill all the PCs before they can get somewhere safe to camp behind locked doors or city walls. This is a goblin mounted scouting party. If the PCs manage to escape, the scouting party will send someone to fetch a raiding party, consisting of three other scouting parties and the raid leader’s party of three regular goblins, five wolves, a level 1-3 spellcaster and a rogue 3/fighter 1 raid leader. And that’s not even fighting on their home turf. If you attack them on their home turf, they have traps and greater numbers. Just this encounter is a TPK at 5th level. I have never seen PCs beat this encounter in the 30 or so years since I wrote it. Dragons don’t scare my players as much as goblins do.

      Truly terrifying.... Especially going for the PCs' horses first!

    One thing I don't understand about this adventure is where are all the canning employees? They're never mentioned and investigating the warehouse seems in the book to mean there's very little or no one about. If it's such a big factory, where do the employees live? Is it open 24 hours a day?

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 7 дней назад

      Yeah, the workers are really are only mentioned in passing -- for example, it says that during the day, the docks and warehouse are really busy, but then at night, it's pretty much a ghost town. When I ran it, I just said the workers all lived back in Fjällbacka. It's about an hour away by boat, so it's technically commutable.

      @1ShotJC Yeah. That's exactly what I did when the players asked. When you're playing with a group if socialists, you know it's gonna come up. Lol

    This was my first intro to your channel! Love it and subbed! Also, “I don’t like it when a game presents multiple mechanical ways to do the same thing” *laughs/cries in Burning Wheel and Aces & Eights*

    I already GMed the chariot and destroyer. I might use this idea to make the heart of darkness a prequel to the destroyer adventure.

    I just picked up this adventure a few days ago, I was thinking about running it tomorrow for a group of beginners at the library but noticed that there aren't descriptions on the type of PCs that would fit in that setting. I'd also need to gather up some quick stats for thugs, grave robbers and any NPC that might fit in scenes. I liked your suggestion for PCs and I see that PDM commented some stats. That will definitely help. I was thinking about using Basic Fantasy as the rules or the Deathbringer mechanics, the simpler the better. I'll have to look for a system that has Victorian style PCs and NPCS that I can borrow. I also have an idea for the bride if one of my players or PCs is female and dies. That PC will become the bride. I was thinking about WHY the party would be in the area, The party can start IN the coach ride to the town, (It provides an opportunity to roleplay before meeting Elizabeth and backstories can be fleshed out) and one of the PCs can be someone that Elizabeth wrote and asked to come and look for Victor. A Prop letter from Elizabeth would be fun to make. That PC can easily be Henry Clerval, and he can be the leader of the group. I think i'll run it in October closer to Halloween, I'll have more of a chance to prep and make any props or print outs I can use. Great video and glad I found it!

    Sir, @5:20 can we agree on the need for trigger discipline? It is important to keep one's booger hook off the bang switch until it is time to fire. :)

    I know, this doesn't really matter much, but a Lance Corporal and a Colonel are completely different rank-wise. A lance corporal is a low rank enlisted, basically almost the lowest of the low, barely above private. A lance corporal is not yet even a non commissioned officer (like a sergeant). A colonel is a fairly high ranking officer: a colonel's next promotion will take them up to general. Lance corporals stand guard, colonels are in charge of entire missions, even the ranking officer on an entire base or post. The lowest ranking officer (lieutenant) outranks the highest ranking enlisted (master sergeant). I know, "who cares"? I served in the military, so i get picky about that. 😊

      I care! And appreciate you pointing this out, it’s an easy thing to get wrong for us civilians.

    did the 5e kobolds get cover, and use hit and run tactics with things like disengage, hide, and keeping to mostly ranged attacks. I'd imagine Molotovs are essentially alchemists fire, if the target is hit with it they essentially taking extra attacks each turn unless they use their action to extinguish it, while a kobold or two runs in for an attack on a target possibly disadvantaged by being on fire, then disengages and retreats behind cover. hit the target from murder holes, and another alchemists fire the second the first is extinguished.

      I would love to see GURPS Lite with some more pages (for breathing room so it doesn’t just read like a minimalist tech manual), better production values, and a few additional rules for completeness (eg today it doesn’t explain firearms and multiple shots).

    Nice review. I ran Chariot and Destroyer for my group some time back and really enjoyed them. I have the PDF for Darkness and I'm thinking about running it, BUT, and this is a big but, I might swap out the Alien RPG rules for Mothership. They look slightly simpler, and although we enjoyed the Alien rules, we all had a hard time remembering them. Do you think Mothership would work just as well as the default? (I'm sure it would, just looking for another opinion).

    • @1ShotJC
      @1ShotJC 28 дней назад

      It definitely would. I’ve run some of the Alien adventures with other systems just because my player group preferred something they were already familiar with. Mothership would work great for these.

    Outgunned adventure is maybe why the broken compass one disappeared. Edit: readed the other coment about the thing with CMON. But Outgunned Adventure is BC in the outgunned format
