Thanks for doing our tag! This is such a great video!
Reney and Raina! LOL! I love that the dog gets in the act - it's going to her head, all this fame! 😂
@@BeyondBooks-wt5il of course! Must credit the pup!
Missed this somehow! We had an unseasonably warm fall too in New England. And yes: when I lived in Buffalo, I remember blizzards on Halloween 😂 👻 I missed out on Persephone’s Garden, but I took advantage of Black Friday and got her Artemis deck ❤ Curious to hear your thoughts on The Monk if you read it! I didn’t realize until Cambridge Companion, how satirical it was. It explains some things!
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission if I do read The Monk next year, I’ll know so much more about it before reading it than I ever do for other books!
Thank you for sharing your practice ❤
You get a gold star for #gothlitnovember 🌟 Was so excited to tune in! So many of these (trying to recall them all lol) sound interesting. I want to get my hands on Monkey Beach and Bad Cree. And yeah, I had the same experience last year: I think a couple of the books I read were definitely more folk horror. But that’s ok! I bought another Melville work which is considered gothic. It’s called Pierre; or, the Ambiguities (weird title I know) only when it arrived I was disappointed in the font size. I don’t know how I’ll possibly read an entire novel in footnote size. Maybe I’ll share photos. I need to read up on Melville. Not to speak for him; I wouldn’t classify him as a downright abolitionist, but I think he was trying, and I think he had a heart, for sure. Interesting: the nods to Turn of the Screw. My daughter is reading that now, and I may reread it. That one actually scared me, which was fun. Yeah, there’s really not much to like in most of the characters in Wuthering Heights, but it’s so damned readable. It’s a force of nature! And as I’ve already mentioned, (read this in an essay) man and nature were not separate entities at all in this work. Pretty cool. I’m half way through or maybe more, of the Cambridge Companion. Thank you again for taunting me with it! Because I decided to pause in reading Madwoman in the Attic (again). I need to read Shirley! Apparently it’s about Emily, if I’m remembering this correctly.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Yay! ⭐️ Folk horror is ok too, as long as it doesn’t get too gruesome! Yeah, I think Melville was sometimes trying to push back against easy stereotypes. It’s hard to explain why I like Wuthering Heights so much because the people are so horrible to each other, but I love it anyway! Glad you’re enjoying the Cambridge Companion. It’s so interesting. I’ve read all the Brontë books but it’s been such a long time since I read Shirley that I can’t remember. Maybe I’ll reread that or Vilette next year. I haven’t even cracked open The Madwoman in the Attic. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but it’s a little intimidating!
@@NicoleACottageWitch Madwoman in the Attic is a pretty engaging read. I’m about half way through, but I don’t foresee finishing it this month because I set it aside for Shirley (which I’m not reading yet) and Cambridge Companion just fit so nicely with my books this year.
So nice to see you 😊 The Gothic Tarot IS fun. I didn’t bring it out this year, I don’t know why. It’s so charming. VC Andrews was huge when I was in middle school. I read some of her stuff, maybe just one series, but not Flowers in the Attic. My friend gave me some of the synopsis and it horrified me; it was too much for my little mind 😂 Glass, Irony and God is SO good! I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. Hope you enjoy it, and the Dylan Thomas ❤
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yeah I’m not sure Flowers in the Attic is hugely child-friendly, from the synopsis. Good to know you like Glass, Irony, and God. I’m looking forward to it. 💜
Your collage work is gorgeous!
@@paintedsouldesign6419 thank you!
Aw man I hope you like The Bell Jar this time around. I've been seeing so many people hate on it recently and am blown away but that's what makes the world go 'round!
I just gotta say I love love love your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them for me and everyone. You always have a great selection of stuff, it’s very unique, I just love that. Plus your background looks really cool. 😎 and I am especially interested in the books you show because I’ve never heard of any of them. Thank you. Love you. And a happy silly season 🎅🎄
@@butterflycucumbers6279 aw thank you! That’s so kind. 💜
It sort of makes no sense that I didn’t pick up Persephone’s Garden. It’s lovely, and so me. Lol I’ll remember not to spend a stupid amount on horseshoes 😂 Those Rowan berry beads are gorgeous. I need to sit and listen to the Moby Dick opera myself. I think I told you I watched some clips and I know I’ll love it.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yeah I think you’d like the opera. Some of the feedback they got on early shows was that some of the language seemed “too modern” but those lines were always word-for-word Melville, or pretty nearly. And probably ranchers around me would say it’s stupid to spend any amount of money on used horseshoes!, even if it’s just a couple bucks. Oh, well.
Haha! That’s too funny, they obviously didn’t know the novel
I’m with these people on staying home to consume less 😂 I love how many tags you participate in. I need to start to diversify my reading. Amazing recs 🖤
@@thebaileygrind yeah, staying home is my default state so it’s probably a much harder suggestion for some people! And yeah, it’s fun to try to read a bit outside of what I might normally read. It does mean going searching for books that aren’t on display at a bookstore, but you can find some cool things that way.
Writing all of these down! How did you read so much on top of Tom Jones?! 😂 I’m in awe. I have a couple of Vandana Shiva books I need to read. I might have to read Walking the Twilight Path! Joyce Carol Oates is intense. I have Bellefleur on my goth lit TBR (which I forgot to include) and I’m not sure I’ll have time for, but we’ll see. It’s been a long time since I’ve read Poe’s poetry, but I think I agree: I like it best. It’s nuts I haven’t read Frenchman’s Creek yet. I’ll look for a copy of On a Woman’s Madness. Bend Sinister is interesting because I believe it was his only ‘political’ novel, as he hated political novels. And of course Nabokov would use the index in an expansive way and turn it into art. I haven’t read Pale Fire yet; I’ve been saving it, because I know it will be a favorite. Have you read Series of Unfortunate Events? It’s like Nabokov for kids. My daughter wanted to read the series with me a few years ago. She stopped after 4 or 5 books, but I continued on. The Italo Covino book sounds like a trip! I’ll have to check it out. I haven’t read Ghandi’s autobiography, but it sounds interesting, and I should.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Lots of audiobooks is the answer. Tom Jones I definitely listened to sped up. I can usually do 1.5-2x depending on the narrator but for parts of that one it was 2.5x because it was just so slow! It came up in the Cambridge companion to gothic fiction, though-Fielding wanted to be an ultra-naturalistic alternative to the pre-gothic romances that he didn’t think highly of! These were the first Joyce Carol Oates stories I’ve ever read but I am interested in more now. I read Unfortunate Events years ago and loved it. I remember thinking it was so clever and good fun. As memoirs go, Gandhi’s was interesting. He did t try to always make himself look good, which I appreciated, but he certainly lived an eventful life.
Even so … that’s a lot of reading 😊 I’m still interested in Tom Jones when the time is right. I caved ….. I went ahead and got a copy of the Cambridge Companion to Gothic Literature. I agree with your words on Ghandi: I think if we look for perfection in all of our heroes and myths, there will be nothing left to look up to.
@ I also don’t have kids. That’s a big time-saver!
It’s true! lol
All of these books sound interesting. I love Emily Brontë’s poetry! I have a beautiful edition. I bought Russian Gothic thanks to you. I included it in my TBR video which I filmed, but haven’t posted yet.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I’m glad you like Emily Brontë’s poetry. That bodes well for me! And I couldn’t not get a book called Russian Gothic! What a thing! Looking forward to your TBR.
@@NicoleACottageWitch My daughter when she was 7 used to read Emily’s poetry to me and it was eerie because she read every archaic word without a hiccup, and with a flow which was musical although she’d never read it before. I asked how it was, she was doing this, and she said, “I was born knowing this.”
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission that is a little eerie. Impressive, though.
I need to chill on the book buying too 😂 I’ve been wanting to film a haul for ages, but I keep buying books so I don’t know where to start. The Impressionists Tarot! I still lament my decision not to get it when it was in print. My copy of the Gothic Lit Tarot is supposed to arrive this week! I almost didn’t get it, but …. How could I not?? 😂 It’s ok, you can blame me 😂 Stoked you got the Primordial! It’s so wild and unique. I love Bea Nettles. I have the menstruation deck too ❤ Omg lol I was wondering what that sound was. I thought it was birds.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I almost didn’t get the gothic lit tarot too but thought the same thing! But I had to get it.
I can see how your "vampire costume" deck is one you'd want only in small doses 😅 Enjoyed your VR, Nicole!
@@Peekaboorose thank you! Yeah, it’s a bit intense.
Off to read the description box! This was awesome. Love all the subcategories in contemporary! I found a Gothic Western, quite accidentally 😂 it arrived today.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission really? The idea of gothic western has never even occurred to me. I’ll be curious what you think about it!
Still really want that Cambridge Companion to Gothic Lit! I have the Virginia Woolf one ❤And woah, Gothic Bodies sounds cool!
Sorry for all the comments lol but it’s so funny: I was JUST thinking of the King’s General the other day. I read it YEARS ago, and loved it, but I can’t remember why it’s Gothic. I’ve read a ton of her works.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission and I’ve only read the well known ones. But I enjoyed them so I’ve got to read more, finally!
I’m pretty sure I also have those Melville short stories (is it SAD I’m losing track of my stock?) After finishing Moby Dick, I’ve thought more than once it’s sort of Gothic. Do you agree??
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission it’s certainly got a haunting. And you could maybe make a Jekyll and Hyde comparison. It might require squinting in places, but I could probably be convinced.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission and I had to text my dad last night because I was looking for a book I was certain I had but couldn’t find, so I had to ask if he had it or if I was losing it! (Thankfully, he has it.)
Right, like there are gothic elements. Gothic is a bit difficult to categorize but I think it’s our habit of categorizing everything! It’s fun though.
Ooo I meant to add: Pip’s story arc. That for me, was what stuck out as sort of Gothic.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission yeah ok, that could be a little Turn of the Screw.
Oh man, I was considering rereading Beloved too!
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission do it! It’s incandescent but with its toes in the mud.
I loved it when I read it a few years ago. I have to read more of her work. I read Jazz too, before reading Beloved. Oh man…. SO good, but also, not for everyone.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I’ve read all her novels and I think I need to reread them now.
Yes, exactly! November is MEH 😂
Woot, awesome decks! Hope you had fun with the creation process. I know I always do, even though MPC can be a pain sometimes 😆
@@Peekaboorose thanks! It was so much fun, though yes, the creation was more fun than all the uploading and whatnot.
A great reading list
Thanks!
Notes about Gothic Literature ✓American Gothic Fiction Alan Lloyd-Smith (library textbook): “the message of Gothic…is that it isn’t so much a matter of whether you can repeat the past as whether the past will repeat itself in you” (p.1) “But in this enigmatic American erosion the Gothic object is allowed its own life, remaining stubbornly resistant to interpretation, however persuasive” (p.74) “A all these instances suggest, domestic Gothic is intimately bound up with the idea of the house, gender, and the family, which becomes, through metaphor, a way of externalizing the inner life of fictional characters” (p.102) ‘“The past isn’t dead,” says one of Faulkner’s characters, “it isn’t even past,” which might serve as a motto for American Gothic itself as it explores the tensions between a culturally sanctioned progressive optimism and an actual dark legacy.’ (p.118) ✓Unsettled Remains: Canadian Literature and the Postcolonial Gothic, Edited by Cynthia Sugars and Gerry Turcotte “Initially, it is fair to say, the Gothic emerged as a way of responding to the unfamiliar by demonizing and even fetishizing the “unknown” - be it human or landscape. Often this monstrous presence was figured as an Indigenous one - a danger lying just beyond the garrison but not sufficiently removed. Over time, Canadian writers began to appropriate this force, to bend it to a national purpose, and to map the parameters of an identity that might embrace what was resonantly local so that the Gothic became a way to insist on, rather than deny, a colonial history. In effect, the gothic mode was used to articulate a suitably “haunted” version of the Canadian identity, one that lent the Canadian locale a “feel” of authenticity because it had been rendered “(un)homely” (that is, both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time).” (p.xvii) ‘“The white Canadian looks at the Indian. The Indian is Other and therefore alien. But the Indian is indigenous and therefore cannot be alien. So the Canadian must be alien. But how can the Canadian be alien within Canada? -Terry Coldie, Fear and Temptation’ (Brian Johnson, p.25). “Since 2001,,...much important work has been done on the Gothic in English-Canadian literature, including Justin Edwards’s Gothic Canada: Reading the Spectre of a National Literature (2005) and a 2006 special issue of University of Toronto Quarterly, guest edited by Marlene Goldman and Joanne Saul. Most relevant to this essay is Jodey Castricano’s ‘Learning to Talk with Ghosts: Canadian Gothic and the Poetics of Haunting in Eden Robinson’s Monkey Beach,’” (Jennifer Andrews, p.206). ✓Gothic Literature by Sue Chaplin “Recent work in Gothic criticism has argued that the Gothic ought not to be defined in terms of its emotional or aesthetic effect, or even regarded as a literary ‘genre’ at all (that is to say, as a class of texts conforming to particular conventions of content and/or style). Rather, it should be considered a ‘mode’ of writing that responds in certain diverse yet recognisable ways to the conflicts and anxieties of its historical moment and that is characterised especially by its capacity to represent individual and societal traumas” (p.4) “These Gothic interventions into other genres of literature are discussed in Part Three…and it will be seen that during this period the mutable quality of the Gothic became, paradoxically, one of its characteristics features; ‘paradoxically’ because the very quality of mutability is what makes it so difficult to ‘characterise’ the Gothic, to identify its defining qualities as a literary category.” (p.20) Painting: The Passage of St Gothard by Salvator Rosa Byron’s poems Giaour and Manfred Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber Jamaica Kincaid’s The Autobiography of My Mother “Gothic tends to foreground what other forms of writing (the realist novel, for example) often seek to conceal: that its narratives are not necessarily trustworthy; that literary conventions bear a slippery relationship to the ‘truths’ they mean to communicate.” (p.182) “In [Jane Eyre and ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’], women are portrayed as susceptible to madness, but their mental trauma is not depicted as somehow innate to their femininity; rather, it is related to and emanates from social situations that render the female protagonist vulnerable, alienated and desperate.” (p.213)
One of my favorite things about this tag is seeing people alter it to fit their interests! This is such a neat TBR and I feel so honored you're participating. Tropical gothic as a subgenre? Yes please!

A more contemporary work by David Mitchell has also been compared to Ulysses : Number 9 Dream, which I read and LOVED some years ago simply because my daughter picked it up in a book shop and insisted on it!!! Crazy!!! It’s drawn a bit of controversy (what hasn’t) because its written through the perspective of an Asian man, and the author is white, but damn is it gorgeous, and puzzling, which I like. He also wrote Cloud Atlas which I loved as well.
@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission Goodreads tells me I’ve read Cloud Atlas and seem to have liked it but I can’t remember it so I might have to reread it! I do have Slade House which I’m hoping to read this year sometime. I don’t think I’ve read any of his other books so far.
@@NicoleACottageWitch 😂😂😂 that’s too funny you can’t recall! It happens though. Cloud Atlas is amazing and I should re-read it too.
Ah!! I can’t believe you found that Nabokov book! I’ve looked for it too!
